Fisher Reyna Education Summary Elements Mix-Up Activity Literary Informational
Summary Elements Mix-Up General Directions: Students are asked to organize the summary elements for the text structures listed below. These structures focus on the global meaning of the text and therefore are used as key elements in producing a well-written summary when applied to reading selections. Academic terms and useful words for writing a summary are included. The goal of this activity is to familiarize the students with the general structures that writers use to write. This gives students elements to think about as they read and greatly improves comprehension. This activity also helps students practice important academic vocabulary in both reading and writing. Note: More than once copy of the cards per page is provided to maximize use of paper. Literary Informational Fisher Reyna Education 2013
Summary Elements Mix-Up Directions: Have students organize the title cards as shown. Title cards are easily identified by the dash border around each text structure title. Literary Informational Fisher Reyna Education 2013
Answer Key After students organize the title cards, students should organize the corresponding summary elements under the title cards as shown. Students should do this activity with guidance until they have committed the summary elements to memory and are capable of doing this activity independently. Literary Informational Fisher Reyna Education 2013
Summary Elements Mix-Up Procedural or Media Literacy Procedural and media literacy text may be embedded or stand alone as a single selection. Students should be familiar with the critical attributes of this type of text and the connections in understanding the message or information of the writer. Students may organize the procedural and media literacy cards as shown below. As with the other summary element cards, more than once copy is provided to maximize use of paper.
