13 Improved Particle ID with Multiclass Classifier Continuing the use of advances in other fields BaBar depends heavily on accurate particle identification (PID). PID tools constantly improving. Ongmongkolkul implemented a new Error Correcting Output Code (ECOC) algorithm for BaBar s latest K,π,p and e PlD selector, called the KM selector. ECOC is a generic algorithm for combining binary classifiers such as neural networks and decision trees into a multiclass classifier. The indicator matrix for our implementation is called an exhaustive matrix, comprised of 7 binary classifiers, each trained differently: Exhaustive matrix used in the KM selector. 1 and 0 mean the samples of that given particle type were treated as signal or background respectively for training classifier t i. t 0 t 1 t 2 t 3 t 4 t 5 t 6 K π p e Frank Porter, Caltech DOE Review, June 29, 2009

15 Visualization Tool for Decision Trees Decision trees used in many analyses; growing in complexity as we optimize analyses. Visualization tools needed to understand and check. Ongmonkolkul has created a visualization tool: < 0.04 b gammaminenergycm gammaminenergycm < 0.07 > 0.04 < 0.85 > 0.07 helicitycosangle s h0chi2 < 2.77 gammaminenergycm > 2.77 s < 0.26 s < 0.97 > 0.26 gammamins9s25 > 0.97 s s > 0.85 h0chi2 < 1.16 s > 1.16 s Numbers cut values Node size number of training points flowing through Node color signal/background ratio flowing through Line thickness amount of signal or background 15 Frank Porter, Caltech DOE Review, June 29, 2009
16 Visualization Tool for Decision Trees (cont) Tool provides a graphical comparison of importance of variables gammaminenergycm 54.9% 5.1% 5.0% Other 16.2% 10.0% 8.7% h0uncmass helicitycosangle h0chi2 helicityangle Pie chart showing weighted sum-of-differences in figure-of-merit of node splitting. Twentytwo variables were used in constructing tree; significance is dominated by four. 16 Frank Porter, Caltech DOE Review, June 29, 2009
17 Comments, BaBar Leadership and service roles in collaboration continue Much physics continues to be underway There is considerable room for further sensitivity to new physics in B decays Motivation for SuperB Plan of Presentations I Overview and Service (20 min) Frank Porter II Physics (40 min) Piti Ongmongkolkul & Bertand Echenard III SuperB (20 min) David Hitlin 17 Frank Porter, Caltech DOE Review, June 29, 2009
