1 Summer Reading 2017 for Sophomore Students Dear Sophomore student: Welcome to Sophomore English, where you will read an extensive list of works from across the world and become a better writer. This course will challenge you to become a more critical reader, expose you to the richness of literature throughout the world and ages, and prepare you for the rest of high school and beyond. As a student in Sophomore English, you are expected to complete a summer reading assignment that must be finished prior to the first day of the fall semester of You may buy the book or check it out from a library. If you check out the book, use Post-It notes placed on the pages for any annotating that you do. Use separate paper for your notes and cite the page numbers of textual examples/quotations. To complete by the first day of school: 1. Read The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas (ISBN: ) 2. Interact actively with the text as you read. Take notes, annotate, write down questions or comments you have to share with the class, record important textual examples, and note literary elements such as setting, characterization, point of view/narration, tone, structure, themes, imagery, and symbolism. *Your notes will be evaluated when school resumes. You should have one full page of notes. Notes should be hand written and written on notebook paper or in a spiral notebook. No typed notes will be accepted. 3. As you read, pay attention to the characters and the different aliases the characters use. COMPLETE the character analysis chart and the quote chart. Be prepared to be assessed on your reading of the novel through a multiple choice test, and/or an essay test, and/or class discussions. Have a wonderful summer! 2 OUTLINE OF NOVEL REQUIREMENTS: 1. ANNOTATION OF TEXT Careful reading requires thought AND processing. Whether using a hard copy of the book or reading digitally, you must annotate. Annotation is simply thinking about what you have read and making notes. These notes may be in the form of a question or point out elements or techniques of fiction. It could be that a quote really stands out to you or that a certain part of the plot reminds you of another novel or of a real-life story. In a hard copy, you may annotate in the margins highlight and underline where appropriate. If you checked out a book, you may use a notebook noting the page and your annotation. You will turn in your annotated notes (at least 10 notes) when you arrive the first day of school. 2. Character Analysis As characters are introduced list them leaving space for as thorough of a description as the novel allows. Descriptions, quotes, indirect characterization, etc. are appropriate along with basic and/or quoted evidence. Descriptions should include ALL aspects of a character when provided. 3. Quotes that Count - Significant quotes from the text should be marked or highlighted. You are required to pull the two (2) MOST SIGNIFICANT quotes (in your opinion) from each 10 Chapter Section- along with two (2) from the last 3 chapters. (16 quotes in all). Keep your quotes short to medium in length, properly cite them: Quote. (Character- or Narrator, Chapter, Page, Paragraph#) and provide a brief explanation of why this quote is significant to the story.
