1 Where would you like to go this summer? Summer is a time for the beach, the park, the backyard, the lake; for a picnic, a camping trip, a special vacation. It s a time for going places and having fun. While you are doing these fun things at these great places, take along a good book. Let it take you to those places where you can t go. An adventure is waiting for you! So, we have chosen some books that we think you ll love and also have some books listed for you to choose. All we ask is that you enjoy the book, and then tell us about it. Find your upcoming grade level in the sheets that follow. Follow the instructions and read! Have Fun with Summer Reading!

2 Rising 6th-8th Grades Summer Reading List Rising 6 th -8 th graders may look at the book list and pick at least one book to make a poster or PowerPoint. Students will present their PowerPoint or Poster in their Literature Class. They will not present the projects on the first day of school, however, they will need to ask their Literature teacher when to bring in their projects. Though each book has been reviewed, parents are advised to look over their child s choice of book with individual personality and maturity in mind. If a student has read a book before, she or he should choose a different book! Note: Parents please think about reading the book the same time your child reads the book, this way you can discuss mature themes that may be found in the book. You may want to also read the book reviews at PluggedIn.com, which is a Christian company that writes reviews for some of these books. Each Middle Schooler must also read the required book Wonder by R. J. Palacio and do a Kinder than Kind Project as described on the next page.

3 "Kinder than Kind" Project Each student should document at least one act of service through which they have shown kindness to others. Examples may include (but are not limited to): - free babysitting for a family in need - helping tutor a younger student over the summer - performing yard work or house work for someone who is not physically able to do so - performing an "anonymous" helpful service - mowing a neighbor's yard without letting them know who did it (or some other service) - taking out/returning garbage and recycle cans on neighborhood trash pick-up day - creating a basket of snacks and cold water for your mail carrier or delivery person on a hot summer day - visiting a retirement home - visiting someone in the hospital - helping a younger child learn a sport or musical instrument - volunteering with your family at a local Rescue Mission, soup kitchen, shelter, etc. Each student should perform at least 1 act of service and write a paragraph discussing the following questions: - What service did you participate in? - Where did you serve? - Whom did you serve? - What was their reaction? - How did you feel while you were serving? - What did you learn? - Include a Bible verse or biblical principle that addresses kindness and/or service. The student should come to school prepared to share their experiences along with a digital presentation (Power Point/Prezi) or a poster. Please include at least 1 picture of yourself serving others. The presentation should include: - the service you participated in - where you served - how you served - Bible verse or biblical principle that applies

5 Middle School Rubric for Summer Reading Activities Content and Analysis of Book The project includes: 1. The main themes 2. The characters and settings 3. conflicts from the story 4. Students opinion of the book The student has a misunderstanding of one of the components or the project has some inaccuracies. The student is missing one of the main components for a proper analysis of the book. Student is missing two or more components listed for a proper analysis of the book. Creativity The project was very appealing. It was colorful and included many pictures. It also was different and creative. It went above the normal book report. The project was very appealing. It was colorful and had a few pictures. It looked like the average student book report. The project only included one or two pictures or it was not colorful. It was a little disorganized thus causing it not to be attractive. The student did not seem to put any effort into the project and it would not catch a consumer s eye. Mechanics and spelling The project has: 1. correct spelling & correct grammar 2. Correct use of difficult vocabulary 3. book titles that are underlined or italicized The project has a few mistakes in spelling and grammar or a few vocabulary words are used incorrectly or the book title is not correct. The project has some mistakes in spelling and grammar; vocabulary is below grade level and poorly used. Student did not use spell check or read their project out loud to catch mistakes. Student misuses vocabulary. Student s analysis of biblical themes Meaning: Can you connect the story to a theme in the Bible? Is there anything in the story that goes against the bible? Student wrote a very thoughtful reflection of how the book reflected biblical themes and even pointed out where something was said that went against the Bible. Student wrote a good comparison of the book to the Bible, but it lacked organized thought and did not fully explain his/her opinion. Student wrote a short comparison to the Bible but did not use any scriptural references (Bible verses) to back up his/her opinion. Student wrote one or two sentences explaining how the book reflected a theme in the Bible. Presentation! The student made eye contact, spoke loudly and clearly, had good sentence flow and pacing and displayed confidence in their knowledge and delivery. 20 pts The student s presentation lacked in one area: made little eye contact, or spoke too softly, or lacked confidence in their book knowledge. The student s presentation lacked some knowledge of the book. The presentation seemed lacking almost as if student did not read the book but watched a video or read a synopsis of the book.
