His recent output includes a cleverly self-reflective country song ( Talkin Song Repair Blues ), a gospel album (Precious Memories) and a beautiful, contemplative CD produced by Alison Krauss (Like Red on a Rose). Now he s back with Small Town Southern Man (Arista Nashville), his handsome, addictive new single; it s the first release from his next album, Good Time, due in March. A fiddler saws away, while Mr. Jackson sings his old-fashioned tribute to an oldfashioned patriarch who does what old-fashioned patriarchs are supposed to do: he makes a family and works nonstop to provide for it. In the video, posted at cmt.com, Mr. Jackson and his band play in a time-lapse dance hall, watching the man and his family grow up as the decades (and their associated fashions) flash by. By the end the song has come to seem like a celebration of obsolescence. He said his greatest contribution is the ones he ll leave behind, Mr. Jackson sings, calmly and contentedly facing the fact that even the sturdiest paterfamilias or country singer will eventually be replaced. 3

6 alan jackson has good time returning to country basics from the front row 1 4 by Deborah Evans Price 01/28/08 NASHVILLE (Billboard) - After taking a couple of creative detours on his last two albums, Alan Jackson returns to his readily identifiable brand of traditional country with the March 4 release of Good Time. I always come back to what I came to Nashville to do, and that s make traditionalsounding country music. This album bounces back to that, Jackson said of the Arista Nashville release, which follows his platinum-selling gospel collection, Precious Memories, and the Alison Krauss-produced Like Red on a Rose. Jackson knew Like Red on a Rose was not what his core fans had grown to expect from him. When we made it, I said the critics will probably like it, but I don t know if my regular fans will get it, he said of the project, which has sold 775,000 units, according to Nielsen SoundScan. I think had radio embraced it a little more, the fans would have liked it. But according to Arista Vice President of Marketing and Artist Development, Jon Elliot, Like Red on a Rose broadened Jackson s base. Commercially it may not have sold as well as other Alan Jackson albums, he said, but in terms of the acclaim that it got, it put him in a whole new light with certain non-country music fans and the industry as a whole. Precious Memories, on the other hand, resonated strongly with Jackson s core audience as well as gaining him fans in the Christian market. It was the year s top-selling Christian title in 2006 and has sold 1.6 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Will he record another Christian album? Well, I will, but I ve got that polka album I want to do first and I ve been putting it off, Jackson said with a laugh. Jackson has always written the bulk of his hits, but Good Time marks his first time as sole writer on every track. It s also a reunion with Keith Stegall, who has produced every Jackson album except Like Red on a Rose. First single "Small Town Southern Man," No. 11 on Billboard s Hot Country Songs chart, has proved to be a strong introduction to the new album. The label felt it was a good song that my die-hard fans could connect with, Jackson said of the single. When I started writing it, I started pulling things from my memories that fit the song. A lot of it is from my life and my parents life. Jackson duets with Martina McBride on the lively Never Loved Before. When asked why he chose McBride for the song, the self-effacing artist replied in a smooth Georgia drawl, A lot of people wouldn t want to sing with me, I imagine, but Martina has toured with me. She s one of the best female singers out there. It s a fun song with a light lyric. On the more somber side is the track Sissy s Song, which Jackson wrote for a family friend who died in a motorcycle accident NANCY WARDEN Oklahoma City, OK THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! My husband and I traveled about 2 1/2 hours for the show. I was so excited to see him walk out on stage. Alan seemed very upbeat and did a lot of smiling. He seemed to be enjoying himself. I was especially happy that Alan sang both Like Red on a Rose and A Woman s Love. Of course, it was great to hear everyone s old favorites Where Were You, Remember When, Mercury Blues, Drive, etc. It is always so exciting to hear Alan in concert. His voice is so clear and crisp. It amazes me that the lyrics are so easy to understand when Alan sings. Every song tells a story. Some are sad, some are happy, and others are just fun! Towards the end of the concert we were allowed to stand at the stage. Alan noticed a girl sitting on her mother s shoulders. The young girl was so excited that she was shaking. He walked over and handed her a pick. I thought it was a very special gesture on his part and showed that he is a caring person. At the very end of the show, Alan signed autographs. I was able to get a photograph signed that we took at his Columbus, Ohio concert with Brooks and Dunn. It was a picture of the three of them jamming on stage. I love watching Alan perform. He is so talented. I hope that he will keep touring in my part of the country for a very long time. It looks to be another great year for Alan! I think Good Time is one of Alan s best albums. It s comparable to A Lot About Livin and Drive, which are two of his most successful albums. Alan wrote all 17 songs on the album, which in my opinion could all be hit singles. If you haven t already purchased a copy, be sure to get one soon, I promise you re going to L-O-V-E, LOVE IT! And all the songs are so good - I can t even begin to pick a favorite. Once you ve heard it, be sure to or write to us and let us know your favorites. I hope you enjoy the Good Time puzzle Abby made for us. She also has been writing the Snapshots for a while and I don t know if I ve ever given her credit for that. She does a really good job coming up with cute and clever little sayings. Remember to send in your photos for the newsletter, anything related to Alan. I m hoping we ll get some great photos this year of everybody havin a GOOD TIME at the shows (hint, hint)! You can check the website for the most up-to-date information on his appearances and tour schedule. Alan and Brooks and Dunn will be in Canada in April. These are some dates that were left over from last year so make sure if you re in that area to go see this awesome show! We have a lot of dates getting ready to announce for May and a few for the summer. Then I m sure we ll have a big round of shows in the fall months. Keep checking the website for tour updates, so you don t miss Alan when he s in your area! Back to the album, one of the songs is called Sissy s Song. I m not sure if you ve heard any background on this song. Alan wrote this song about Sissy Fitzgerald who worked for him and Denise in their home. Sissy was a good friend to everybody she worked with, including me. She always had a smile on her face and never a cross word to say. She was so much fun to work with. Sissy was taken from us last May very tragically and suddenly. She left behind a husband, two beautiful children and tons of family and friends. I still think of her a lot and miss her tremendously as do all her friends and family. I have this picture, taken a few years ago, on my desk. I wanted to share it with you, so you could know Sissy, too. We love her and miss her. Please keep her family in her prayers!
