1 THE SeasideTimes Issue 6 March 2014 Spring is Here! Kendall Osborne Editor in Chief I hope you had a wonderful February because it is now March! I think almost everyone knows what happens in March right? Well, if you didn t know, I will tell you, Spring! Spring takes up a large part of March and April. During spring most baby animals are born. Also, thanks to spring we have a week off of school, called Spring Break. There are other things that take place in March too! For example, St. Patrick s Day really makes March the epic month it is. St. Patrick s Day is one of my favorite holidays because a mischievous little leprechaun runs around your house and messes it up (my mom usually clean the house up). Then he or she leaves us sweet treats like candy bars, chocolate coins, green M&M s, and my favorite, a big chocolate four leaf clover. Let me tell you, that four leaf clover is delicious! My good friend Isabella is going to Washington D.C. over Spring Break in April. Isn t that awesome! I ve never been to Washington D.C., but I hear it is amazing! There are so many things to do and places to visit the possibilities are endless! If I were to go to Washington D.C., our capital, my first stop would be the White House. Then I might learn about how money is made. Someday, I hope to travel to Washington D.C. Well that about wraps it up for this month s editorial. Enjoy the paper!!! 2 Spring Is Here! Katy Nakai, Staff Reporter Dolphin Advisor Seaside Times Staff Did you know that.? March showers bring spring flowers! Spring is a wonderful time to have fun in the rain. Popular spring blooms include tulips, hyacinths, daffodils, daisies, and lilies. Dandelions are usually the first to bloom. In the springtime, new baby birds learn to sing their species song. Flooding is also more common in the springtime due to snowmelt and spring rains. In late spring, hurricane season starts in certain parts of the country. As it gets warmer, fleas are also more active, so make sure you have a defensive plan to protect your pets! In the wild, all the sleepy animals awake from hibernation in spring. Spring comes to an end around June 20-21, when summer arrives! Dear Dolphin Advisor, Dear Dolphin Adviser, I just found out that my best friend has been saying bad things about me behind my back. I told him how I felt and he wouldn t talk to me. Now we re in a fight and it is not fun. Will it go on forever? Will we ever be friends again? ~A Frightened Friend Dear Frightened, I ve felt your pain, it really isn t fun to be in a fight, but I need to tell you that friendships aren t perfect. If you felt like you did something to start the fight, apologize. But don t say sorry just because you want to their friend. It will be tough but your friend won t stay mad at you forever. Yes, if you both try to get along again you can mend your friendship. The best of wishes! ~Dolphin Advisor The Secrets of the Seaside Library Mia Ferrante, Assistant Editor Is the library full of mysteries? Well, those questions can be answered thanks to lots of help from Kristen Cummings and Kim Leonard. Did you know that the library gets their books from donations, from buying books online and in stores with a book budget given by the PTA? There is also a 6 person Library Committee, which meets periodically in order to see what new books to buy. To help decide which books to purchase, there is a list in the library where you can write down what books you recommend for the library. The Library Committee also tries to buy books related to projects we need to do, like the state report in 5th grade and the Gemstone report in 4th grade. They also sometimes ask teachers for their opinion on what they should buy. Was the fact that the library is fully run by volunteers on your mind? The new volunteers get trained at the beginning of the year, and right now there are about 75 volunteers! The special treasure chest books take a while to be chosen. The treasure chest was donated to the library from Ms. Hutchinson. The old books are usually donated, but if they are in a horrible condition, they unfortunately have to be recycled. At the moment, we have about 12,000 books! Have you noticed the dolphin painting in the corner? It was painted at an assembly 4 to 5 years ago by Splash Animals. I hope you learned a few new things about our wonderful library

3 St. Patrick s Day Facts! Blake Hoffman Staff Reporter Sports and Stats St. Patrick s Day Facts and Stats Every year on March 17 th people around the world celebrate St. Patrick s Day. This holiday started as a religious feast in Ireland, but it is now a celebration of Irish culture. Across the globe people have parades, parties and wear a lot of green on this fun day. Here are some fun facts about St. Patrick s Day! The actual color of St. Patrick s Day is Blue! Green became the color of St. Patrick s Day in the 19 th century. There are about 10,000 regular 3 leaf clovers for every lucky 4 leaf clover. People wear green on St. Patrick s Day to avoid getting pinched! The first St. Patrick s Day parade wasn t in Ireland! It was in Boston in In Chicago, on St. Patrick s Day, the rivers are dyed green! 34 million American s have Irish ancestry do you? According to the Guinness Book of World Records the highest number of leaves found on a clover is 14! Don t forget to wear green on March 17 th! Photo Contest Winners! Thank you to everyone that participated in the contest this month. We have very talented students at Seaside. Here are the winners! First Place- Caulin Danyluk, 5 th grade Second Place- Leonardo DiFranco, 4 th grade Hannah Hueth Staff Reporter & Photographer Where at Seaside? Andrew Stovall, Staff Reporter Read the clues to figure out what Seaside object I am and where I can be found. I am a place you really need to check out. I like things to be in a certain order. I can lead you to great adventures and teach you many things. I have many words to share, but I prefer your words be a whisper. I am a good place to find Seaside volunteers. You probably visit me once a week. I m open during lunch. (Turn to the last page of the paper to see the answer).

4 Captain Christopher Morrow, Torrance Fire Department Kendall Osborne, Editor in Chief During my most recent soccer tournament, I interviewed my soccer coach Christopher Morrow. The interview was about his job as a firefighter. He is a remarkable coach and firefighter! I hope you enjoy learning about his exciting and courageous job. Q: What inspired you to be a firefighter? A: I was inspired when a boy in my high school class had a dad who was a firefighter. I joined the L. A. explorer program working for free. And many firefighters told me that it was the best job you could ever have in your life. When I heard that I started believing it. It really is the best job! I love to be hands on, knowing that I help people and the city I work in and I get to work with guys. Q: What does it take to become a firefighter and how long have you been one? A: I started off at about 20 as a L.A. explorer for two years a nonpaid job. Then I got a full time job at Los Alamitos Fire Department for a year and a half. I was then hired as a full time firefighter at Los Alamitos for two and a half years. Finally, I was hired to work with Torrance Fire Department. I have been with the department for 15 years. To become a firefighter you need persistence, you have to be motivated, make the right decisions. You need to stay healthy, stay focused and everyday be happy and think about how you can improve yourself mentally and physically for helping the public. Q: What was one of your most memorable experiences as a firefighter? A: A month and a half ago, there was a huge structure fire. My team and I lattered up to the roof of the structure. I was in charge of the roof operation. There was fire ripping out of the roof. I cut a hole into the roof and fire was bursting out into the sky. I cut another hole and the same thing happened, and another hole Photos by: Chris Morrow and another. It was awesome!!! I got my men safely off the roof and meet up with my captain. Q: You were recently promoted to Captain, how did this change your job? A: It changed my life, my family and job entirely! The best way I know to be a good Captain is always be there for my firefighters. I need to be a good role model to my team and always put them first. I need to make sure that each one of them returns home safely. And if I do that I know I m doing my job right! Q: If I wanted to be a firefighter what advice would you give me? A: Make sure you maintain good grades, diet and exercise, go to college and get a degree. Do the L.A. Explorer program to learn what the job is all about. Become a paramedic and work your way up. People in my life told me I couldn t do the job. Don t ever let anyone tell you can t do something or tear down your dreams. Jokes of the Month Andrew Stovall, Staff Reporter St. Patrick s Day Jokes 1. Why can t you iron a four-leaf clover? Because you shouldn t press your luck! 2. Why can t you borrow money from a leprechaun? Because they re always a little short! 3. What did the leprechaun do for a living? He was a short order cook! 4. Where can you always find gold? In the dictionary!

5 Homemade Smoothies Hannah Hueth, Staff Reporter One of my favorite after school snacks is a homemade smoothie. You can make them so many different ways depending on what fruits you like the best. Here are a few of my favorites. Try them! Ingredients: Creamy Peach 2 cups of frozen peach slices 1 small banana ½ cup vanilla Yogurt ½ cup pineapple juice Mango-Banana 1 banana 2 cups frozen mango cubes 1 cup orange juice Very Berry 1 cup frozen blueberries 1 cup frozen strawberries ½ cup raspberry sorbet 1 cup cran-raspberry juice Strawberry-Guava 2 cups frozen strawberries ½ cup guava nectar Photo by: Hannah Hueth How to make them: Put a few ice cubes in the blender and add the ingredients. Process for maybe 2 minutes until it looks smooth. If you can t decide which one to try, why not try both? First fill the glass half full with one flavor, then pour a second flavor over the back of a spoon to create a top layer. It looks really fancy and it is so delicious. DRAWING CONTEST!! Theme- What inspires You What am I... I m the library. Do you love to draw? Are you an artist? If so, you will be happy to hear that we will be having a drawing contest in for the April Issue. The winner s masterpiece will be displayed in the Seaside Times in April 2014 issue for everyone to enjoy!! Artwork is due to the paper by March 21 st.
