3 rationale For Project 2- Icons, I was given the phrases: Try Faking It. Turn it Upside Down. Simple Subtraction. and Pay Attention to Distractions. In order to make these cards I initially looked at the work of Pippo Lionni and Viktor Hertz for inspiration. I enjoyed the simplicity of the images and their ability to convey a straightforward message easily. Pippo Lionni s work uses humour and clear strategies that add a clever twist to his art. Viktor Hertz s movie posters are simple yet intuitive- the audience could immediately determine the movie based on the composition and previous knowledge. Through my cards I employed their tactics by using humour and uncomplicated imagery. I explored multiple facets of the phrase Try Faking It. At first I thought of someone who did not know what they were talking about therefore they were saying bullshit - this was shown through a symbol of a bull and poop. This was too symbolic and didn t leave much to the imagination. I also drew someone not knowing what to say but just saying an exclamation point. However, I found that this concept did not convey the idea clearly enough. I tried drawing a google search bar to show that if you did not know something someone would just attempt to search on google. This idea needed too much interpretation. The concepy I used was someone trying to fake their emotions by using a mask. I found this image conveyed the phrase most clearly and effectively. Turn it Upside Down. was the most straightforward of all the phrases so I did not want to complicate things further. I first attempted to use arrows to show the idea of upside down. I also tried using phrases that people could use their previous knowledge to draw from the phrase such as turn your frown upside down or I turned the house upside down. However, the simplest and most effective imagery was turning the stick man upside down. I thought that the best way to convey that was to put the two people on the same plane, one person standing regular and one person doing a handstand as it juxtaposes the figures in an interesting way. It draws attention to the effort it takes for someone to actually go upside down. For Pay Attention to Distractions. I thought about what distracts the average audience as well as a humorous take on the phrase. My first idea I showed a woman walking down the street and a man wolf-whistling after her as she turns around and pays attention to the distraction. Although I like this idea I do not think it is as clear as my final concept. Phones are usually what can be distracting to the average person so I represented a phone in a black circle to indicate that it is allowed/ encouraged. I also showed someone on the phone, this idea evolved into a man holding a woman s hand while looking at his phone showing that he is concentrating on a distraction rather than on her. I chose this as my final concept as I found that it conveyed the message clearly and concisely. For Simple Subtraction. I used the idea of the stickman to my advantage and incorporated humour and acknowledge the audience of designers. For my first concept I tried taking away the head of the stickman to represent the craziness of taking away a simple circle. I expanded this idea with taking away the roundness of the stickman s hand to show that it got cut off. Although thse ideas were humorous the one that I went with gave a nod to designers. My final concept was an even more simplified stickman that gives him a modern and minimalist look. 02
