2 Page 2 Quote of the month! M O N R O E T E E N S M O N T H L Y Fun fact of the month The Puritans were the first in this country to point out the need for some kind of public education. They established schools to teach not just the essentialsreading, writing and math- but also to reinforce their core values ( com/public-schools1.htm). We re ONE YEAR OLD!!! WOW! It s been an entire year since we first started printing monthlies. I m happy to say that it has been a great learning experience guessing exactly what you guys want, or better yet, need, to read each month. From school advice, to how to deal with anxiety, and your favorite Youtubers, I think I ve covered a wide variety of topics. Hopefully you ve enjoyed them. To celebrate our one year anniversary, however, you are not going to hear a peep out of me (except for this short blurb of course). You, my friends, have the very distinct pleasure of indulging in the voices of your peers. Yes, you heard me right. This month, teens just like you have submitted their original creative poetry, including the runner up entry for the EVERY HERO HAS A STORY Contest. If, after reading these incredible poetic pieces, you are inspired to submit your work to next month s issue, please me at monroeteens@gmail.com. We d love to have your words on our pages. So you Wanna Know Who Won the Summer Reading Baskets!? I know you guys are dying to know!!! Just a reminder, this year we had various prizes up for grabs. Of course we had the three grand prize baskets: Ultimate DIY Basket, Graphic Novel Basket, and YA Fiction Basket. In addition we also had the EVERY HERO HAS A STORY writing contest prize of a leather bound journal, a feather quill pen and an ink well. So without further ado, here are the winners: OVERALL SUMMER READING PROGRAM: Lilianna L. 720 total points Ultimate DIY Basket William L. 380 total points Graphic Novel Basket Emily F. 370 total points Young Adult Fiction Basket EVERY HERO HAS A STORY WRITING CONTEST: First Place: Emily F. Feather Quill Pen, Journal and Ink well Runner up: Anonymous $10 Amazon Gift Card Third Place: Aurora G. Grab box prize Thanks again to everyone who participated in this year s Monroe Teens Summer Reading Program. I hope you all had a great summer and I hope you all have a safe and amazing school year. Remember I m always here if you need help with anything. I hope you enjoy our one year anniversary issue. Best, DaVonne Teen Librarian

3 Page 3 Contradistionction [kon-truh-di-stingkshuhn] (n.) distinction by opposition or contrast: plants and animals in contradistinction to humans. Word of the month POETRY IS THE REFRESHING DRINK AFTER A LONG JOURNEY THROUGH LIFE S DESERTS AND DOWNFALLS! Literary term of the month Meiosis [my-oh-sis] the Greek term for understatement or belittling : a rhetorical figure by which something is referred to in terms less important than it really deserves, as when Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet calls his mortal wound a scratch. (The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Literary Terms) Words and Phrases! Creative writing from your peers! Weather by Emily Franzen Leave me alone! Wind, wind swirls. Tornado, no tornado. Tears. Rain. Fall. Hurricane, no hurricane. Anger. Sparks. Screaming. Thunder and lightning. Make this be a dream. Dream? No reality. I'm a reckless storm. Why didn't you just leave me alone?

4 Page 4 R U N N E R - U P : E V E R Y H E R O H A S A S T O R Y W R I T I N G C O N T E S T! Who is your hero? My kindergarten teacher asks. Batman! He is tough and likes Karate like me! What about Snow White Or Cinderella? They are beautiful princesses! Who is your hero? My 4th grade teacher asks Ash Ketchum, he is the pokemon master! She Laughed Thats a boys game. Why not Hannah Montana? She is better. Who is your hero? My CCD Teacher asks. Elton John, he is not afraid to be himself! My teacher grows pale. Mary is better she is the mother of christ. He said sternly Who is your hero? My friend asks Andy Sixx he is a good singer, nice, plus he is hot. Ewww that emo guy You aren't a cutter are you? NO! You should like Zayn Malik then. He is sexy and not a gross punk. Who is your hero? My mom asks I Like Markiplier, He. Is one of your internet losers. Why can't you be normal and pick Taylor Swift? I like Batman but, he was too tough for a 5 year old girl. I like Ash but, he was a guys videogame character. I like Elton John but, the church is conservative and bigoted. I like Andy Sixx but, i'm labeled as an emo. I like Markiplier but, he isn't a real person. So my question is WHO IS MY HERO SUPOSED TO BE?? 5 odds are by Alyssa Sileo this is a declaration of a promise to explain what motion is like. this is an attempt of a mission to recover time as we ve known it. Page 5 keep this and recount this as your recant of past progressions, mindless occurrences, because i want to gain some clarity, create some new honesty, because, odds are, sleepless, in-your-face awareness isn t your resting-state-of-mind. breaking brains is a fun practice that can remind us of our sensors. perhaps wording materializes the continuum, but it probably looks really cool. perhaps poetizing voids it all, but i ve seen the fall, there s always the part when you land, i m not doubting that now, so how about, some behemoth s thought, we ignore (1) the placing of places and (2) the times of making things, let s go inside, outside, to a new place where words that define degree of stature aren t there because i m starting to think, maybe this whole thing is set up that we will be evaded of self-awareness, but, like, heck to that, dude. let s break time! let s see now. Art is Melting Clocks by Salvador Dali so huh. i can t seem to find where i was going.
