2 Content Modal verbs can be used in the main clause of conditionals. This can be used to talk about certain choices you make - for example, 'If I have time, I can go to the party.' 7 Grammar review What about conditionals? What are conditionals and how are they used? Write three sentences using different types of conditionals:

8 Grammar review Just in case you can t remember, conditionals express hypothetical situations and their results or consequences. They have two clauses or parts, the condition (dependent clause) and the consequence (main clause). Example: If you study hard enough since day 1, you might pass the super hard test. 9 Here is a little more throrough reminder TYPES OF CONDITIONALS Zero conditional For facts If/when + Present simple +... Present simple If you cut your finger, it bleeds. It is very cold when it is -10 C, Second conditional For things in the future that might NOT happen If + Past simple + Would + infinitive If I met the president, I would ask for a job. I would travel for free if I were a pilot. First conditional For things that could happen in the future If + Present simple + Future tense will If she does yoga, she ll be more flexible. I will go to Central Park if I visit NYC. Third conditional For situations that didn t happen if + Present perfect + Would + Have + Past Participle If I hadn t eaten so much chocolate, I wouldn t have had a stomach ache. 10 Please note Now, as you may have noticed from the examples in previous slides, you can combine both modals and conditionals Examples: If Tobi can t make it, he usually sends a message to let me know. 11 Please note You can use the word unless to include an exception or contradiction to what you are saying Examples: You will gain weight unless you stop drinking so much soda. We are going to Thailand this summer unless we have a lot of work. Thomas is coming tonight unless something comes up at the office. 10

12 Please note There are other words and expressions you can use that have similar meanings to if or unless. Here is a list of some of them.
