Kur khamen. > ' Once there was an old man whose name was Siria who was at a place called Aure and wanted to go to a place called Mi. He put his spear on his shoulder and his basket under his arm and he set out. He went and after a while there was a bird crying out because of a python. The python was very big. It had coiled itself and was in a hole in the fork of a huge Tahitian Chestnut tree with lots of ridges at its base. As Siria was going he heard the bird cry out because of the python and he stood looking up into the top of the tree. He thought that the bird was crying out because of a tree kangaroo and that it was sitting inside the hole in the shoulder of the Tahitian Chestnut tree there. He stood thinking to himself and finally stuck his spear upright into the ground and borke off a branch from the tree and hung his basket on it while he went over and climbed up a large vine which hung from the Tahitian Chestnut tree and was rooted in the ground. He climbed until he reached the hole and he did not know about the python, and he began to bang around inside the hole and the python raised up its head. It saw him and he saw it. The python took hold of Siria, confident that it could overcome him. He looked for a way that he could go to escape, and so he just stood and the snake coiled around him. The python coiled around him from his ankles to his head. After it had finished coiling around him he stood swaying with it inside the hole in the shoulder of the tree. Siria stood for a while and then jumped down with the python from the shoulder of the three toward the ground. They fell down and turned horizontally and there was a large tree ridge of the Tahitian Chestnut tree right under them. The python was crushed between Siria and the ridge all the way from Siria's ankle to his head, and his backbone with was soft broke apart. And they turned and crashed to the cround and he kept his eyes closed and held his breath and lay there. The python relaxes itself until it has let go of Siria completely and it goes and lays down and dies over there. He layed there and after a while he opened his eyes slightly and saw it. He jumped up and he pulled up the spear which he had stuck upright in the ground, and he

5 Kaulong OPD Printed: August 25, 2004 Page 5 took it and angrily shot the snake on the ground. And he stuck the spear through the python and the python was writhing on it there. And he went back and got his handbag and put it under his arm and he was angry with himself as he went along the path and he went toward Mi now a very fortunate man. It is finished now.'
