1 Elizabethan Research -- 1 Let s do some research about Shakespeare and his time. The Elizabethan era was a time of great intellectual and commercial growth. Exciting things were happening in exploration, science, and the arts. As you check out the different web sites listed below, and on my website, answer the questions on the following pages. Everyday Life *If you went to public school, what languages would you learn? *How were the lives of boys different from the lives of girls? *What was the average life expectancy in Elizabethan times? *Research an Elizabethan daily chore. How was it completed during Elizabethan times?

What other building from what well-known piece of literature was in that same section? *Name another popular theatre from Shakespeare s time:

What were some of the ingredients? *What were the two big make-up colors of the day? 1 2 *Only men would be allowed to wear pants. Describe how they are made in Elizabethan times. *Research a piece of clothing we no longer wear. What is it called? Why do they wear it? Is it worn more by men than women? How is it made? Money Talks! *How much was a pound worth? *A farthing is of a penny and worth about. *What was the cost of a bottle of French wine in Elizabethan times? *About how much of a worker s weekly wage would it take to buy a bottle of wine? *If you were a laundress for a nobleman, about how much would you earn a year in dollars? (You have to do some math here!)

7 Elizabethan Research -- 7 * Perhaps you d like to know more about crime and punishment, or how much your carpenter father would make a year. Maybe you love clothes and fashion and would like to know more about the elaborate gowns the noblewomen wore. Take a few minutes and research an area that seems interesting to you. Write a short paragraph (5-7 sentences) about your findings below. Extra Credit: Where is Shakespeare buried and what is written on his tombstone?
