2 2 Adjectives are words that tell the reader about nouns or pronouns. The most common adjectives you have met are probably describing adjectives which you probably call describing words. These describe the person or thing in a sentence. For example, in the sentence: A big bear wandered. The adjective is big as it describes the noun, bear. This is a descriptive adjective. Descriptive can also be colours or numbers. Question 1 Write three adjectives that you could use to describe the nouns below. kangaroo ship (c) orchestra (d) automobile (e) dinner (f) pool (g) island (h) holiday (i) window (j) President Question 2 Circle the adjectives in the sentences below. He was a friendly man who was considered generous.
3 3 Constructing a Sentence Sentences are the building blocks of our writing. It is important to remember that a sentence makes sense on its own. This is what people mean when they say a sentence is a complete thought. Students often have trouble separating; their sentences and run them together. It is easy to separate them if you read your work carefully and listen for when the comment is complete. A statement is a sentence that states (or says) something. It is a complete idea and should make sense. It begins with a capital and ends with a full-stop. Examples: Deb dances well. Yesterday the students visited the theatre. Remember every statement must express a complete thought. Question 3 Which of the following are statements? The full-stops have been left off all of them. Write either yes or no before each one. 4 4 Question 4 The following paragraphs have no sentences shown. Rewrite the paragraphs using capitals and fullstops to show where the sentences should be. mavis crept along the corridor it was dark and the wind whistled outside the old house she shivered when she heard the branches of a tree scratching the window of the library she was scared she wished someone would come home your pulse is a wave in your blood that started by your heart beating it is easy to find and to count to see how many times your heart is beating per minute two places to find your pulse are at your wrist and throat your pulse changes throughout the day and is at its lowest after you have been asleep
5 5 Question 5 Many students run their sentences together which makes it very hard to understand their Writing. Rewrite the following passage so the sentences are always correct. Remember, it is best not to begin any sentence with and, but or because. These are best left as joining words. Jack was a clever boy he was always happy to give something new a go. One thing he really wanted to try was hang-gliding he thought it would be great. He decided to save up all his money to attend a class. But he had no luck he couldn t even afford the gear. The day had been as wet. And dull as the week before. The students of the Biology class were ready to hear the excursion had been cancelled they had given up hope as they saw the pouring rain. They waited by the hall ready to hear they had to go to Maths instead of the buses Mrs Michaels came quietly over to them. They could tell by her face it was hopeless she began to talk. The students strained to hear. And couldn t believe their ears they were going!
6 6 (c) I had always hated Sport I hardly had the athletic type of body. And I had no hope in anything against the superstars at my school my mother it was in the genes. I avoided P.E. like the plague and was happy to invent reasons for not doing it I was useless I was sick of them all laughing at me. Because I couldn t run as fast or kick the ball as straight. You can imagine my surprise when the Sport Head Teacher asked me to join the Basketball team. I thought it was a joke But I went along anyway secretly I d have done anything for one of those singlets. Writing a Personal Letter You have brushed up on your layout but let s go over the language of a personal letter. Some of the usual language features are: Conversational tone (as if you are chatting to the reader) Informal language (colloquial) Structured, with a beginning, middle and conclusion Starts with a greeting Ends with a sign off The topic to write is a letter to a friend about a great film you have just seen. Make sure you use correct layout and suitable language features. Plan the things you will say in the Planning Space below. Planning Space write your ideas here

8 8 Questions 6-14 The Lingoth The Lingoth shook its gnarled head and snarled at nothing in particular. Not bright, but very aware it began to take in its immediate surroundings and then flexed its muscles which were still toned despite years of inactivity. Slowly it began to remember how it came to be here, entombed in the mountain. It shook free the fogginess that time had caked on its mind and body as it angered steadily. It was the humans that drove him away, fearful of his power. All their magic combined had not been enough to kill him-only drive him into their trap. He began to slither forward with only one thought in mind: revenge. He couldn t fathom how he d broken free or if he d been released but the future would be his. Suddenly a horrendous roar broke free and soared down the valley. All that pain and frustration; released in a single cry which would alert the world that he was back. As the noise echoed away the Lingoth moved with more freedom down the mountain trail toward the world that tried to stifle his life. First he would feed and then just destroy whatever fell in his path. This time he would feed and become so strong that nothing would be able to stop him. Men would again fear the dark, villages would fall and kings hide helplessly behind stone walls. His thoughts pleased him mightily and the path seemed smoother as his anger clarified his revenge. Like a slug the Lingoth left a dark, slimy trail as it moved across the stone. Everything it touched seemed to darken and die. The festering trail made it easy to track and the three men who hid silently high above knew they had plenty of time to follow the beast. They knew it smelt flesh from the old chronicles left by the magicians circle. They alone were responsible for setting it free and it was an enormous gamble. Gebrith looked at the two others with him and sighed. He knew their decision was the right one but they had unleashed something that could create havoc. They needed the Lingoth, he would draw other forces of the darkness to him and it was their mission to cleanse the world of all evil. He watched the Lingoth speed towards the end of the valley along the trail. Soon they would have to move and begin a quest that would define the future direction of the world.
