3 An alligator made of s, an elepant of s, a monkey made of many s, and a zebra made of s In Saron Werner and Sara Forss s wondrous, wimsical, and witty world, animals of all types sow wat tey re made of from A to Z Blue Apple Books 515 Valley Street Maplewood, NJ wwwblueapplebookscom Jacket illustration 2011 by Tom Slaugter Printed in Cina 03/11 From te publiser Breaking News! Blue Apple Now Distributed by Consortium As Blue Apple moves into a new growt pase and begin a collaboration wit Consortium Books and Distribution (effective June 2014), it is appropriate for me to sare my tougts about publising books for cildren and wat makes our brand unique Te Blue Apple studio model gives us te ability to be creative, spontaneous, flexible and nimble Te goal is to create someting fres, unique, relevant someting tat appeals to bot te cild s intellect and emotions Wile te final product looks simple, it represents many monts of collaborative work If tere is no evolution from te time a manuscript enters te system to te time it emerges, ten we as te publiser do a disservice to te autor and to te illustrator wit wom we collaborate FALL 2009 As a writer of cildren s books, I ave always been interested in describing steps along te way before an object, living or non-living, emerges in its final form My first book, A New Coat for Anna, ad as one of its temes, te making of a red coat For tis fall, more tan 20 years later, I write about te making of a red apple, from fruit growing on te tree to market, to picnic, to seed, to sapling and tree, and finally to a new apple Wit previous texts I ave involved cildren, bot intellectually and emotionally, in te making of an afgan (Wit Love from Grandma), te making of a cradle and quilt (Before You Were Born), te making of a baby (Hey Baby, It s Time to Come Out!), and te making of a painting (Lunctime for a Purple Snake) In eac of te books, te protagonists ad to delay gratification and wait for te finised product Te same is true for te autors and illustrators wo make te books If all goes well, a book takes at least eigteen monts to reac its final destination te cild wo reads it Werner Forss and oter A ma Z ing Types Blue Apple Wat follows are excerpts from publiser s letters over te years $18 99 Te callenge for a publiser is to ave a book emerge from te lengty gestation process still new and fres I sometimes believe as many books die in te process Wat is an as emerge alive and well SPRING 2010 Sould you come to te Blue Apple offices, you would find several designers at work in a large, open space No cubicles In two nearby offices sit te editors In a conference room tere migt be an artist sketcing Unusual, yes But it works for tose wo want to collaborate wit us in a setting were te feedback is immediate At a meeting wit an artist s agent, I was intrigued by te work of Barroux, an artist from Paris I offered to fly im to New York so we could engage face-to-face Te agent tougt e would be appy to come because e recently returned to Paris after spending several years in Brooklyn We agreed on a scedule Barroux would arrive before nine eac morning; e would not break for lunc so e could catc te 2:45 train to NYC and ave time eac afternoon to sop for te Americana is cildren requested (jelly beans, Fruit Loops, Lucky Carms, Obama t-sirts, and bagels) He would sketc one book eac day, a total of four titles, except on Friday wen e would leave early to make two big purcases a guitar for is son and an ipod for is daugter Once an our, I d look over is soulder If I liked te sketc, e would add it to a stack on te table; if I did not, e would quickly crumple te seet, toss it on te floor, ten try anoter idea Trougout te day, te associate publiser and creative director also provided comments and support FALL 2010 Wen I was a graduate student in te Scool of Education at NYU, te most quoted sentence was from Jon Dewey: Play is cild s work We learned tat play is te igest expression of uman development in cildood, for it alone is te free expression of wat is in a cild s soul JESSIE HARTLAND I ave never forgotten te teacings of Dewey, and I keep in mind is words about cildren as I build eac Blue Apple list I am also ever mindful of ow tecnology TV and video games in particular encroaces on, and diminises, every cild s time for creative play As te publiser of Blue Apple Books, I sincerely ope I can entice kids away from teir TV sets, computers, and cell pone apps and provide tem wit books tat allow tem to play, to be creative, and to engage teir wole personalities One does not discover muc about oneself wile sitting in front of a screen it is only by being creative tat te individual discovers te self (DW Winnicott) At play, te cild becomes master, rater tan subject Play allows te cild to transcend passivity and become an active doer Observe a cild at play It s serious business Te cild is working wit eart and mind and body and is completely absorbed Wen cildren are lucky, tey find adults parents, grandparents, teacers, writers wo engage wit tem wit tat same intensity and purposefulness Te uman need to play is a powerful one If Blue Apple did not address tat need, I would feel someting essential was missing from our books As George Bernard Saw once said, We don t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing Blue Apple Books is young in years, but as we grow older, you can always count on us to be playful and to provide books tat allow cildren to learn and develop wile tey play along wit our autors and illustrators SPRING 2011 Tom Slaugter, illustrator of Do You Know Wic Ones Will Grow?, said in an interview: I was familiar wit and Elliot Kreloff s work, aving discovered Alpabeasties, te wonderful DwellStudio books, and te SAMi board book series I met tem in person wen I drove my new, used Volvo to NJ, a op-skip-and-jump from my studio in Soo I found wat I can best describe as a Susan A Sea makes er cildren s book debut wit Do You Know Wic Ones Will Grow? Susan A Sea Susan, a former teacer, sared er love mom-and-pop of reading wit elementary scool students book factory Midway Now se lives on Cape Cod wit er usband Wen se s not writing or traveling, se potograps tings tat grow toug Tom Slaugter is te illustrator te of several meeting, I was informed tat books for cildren In addition to is work as a book illustrator, e as also designed posters, playbills, watces, and T-sirts Tom s artwork as been sown in solo exibitions around te world, including I would ave to retink everyting I ad New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Vancouver, Amsterdam, Cologne, and Japan He as worked in collaboration wit Duram Press for over two decades, and is prints are in te collections of te Museum of Modern Art done and te Witney Museum before of American Art in making a cildren s book and, indeed, tat is wat appened Wat began in te spring became a full-court press trougout te summer, and Elliot, Marianna (my tec assistant), and I met several times Elliot informed us wen we were well into te process tat every image would ave to be rescanned at greater resolution UGH! Wile we used te computer to build te book, all of te illustrations were done by and I ope tat every brus stroke will be evident wen te book is publised More tan anyting I ave done, te book is a collaboration between te writer, te publiser/editor, te artist, and Elliot, te art director, wo, if we were making music, was te conductor Sea/Slaugter Blue Apple paintings by Tom Slaugter If a duckling gr and becomes a can a car grow and become a truck? If a kitten grow and becomes a can a cap grow and become a at? Do you know wic ones will grow? Tink, ten answer or Saron Werner Sara Forss 2 3

4 SPRING 2012 FALL 2012 SPRING 2013 FALL Blue Apple Books receives many unsolicited manuscripts every week We accept and publis less tan a alf-dozen manuscripts from te undreds of submissions we receive Here are te questions I ask myself before deciding to acquire a manuscript: 1 Wat age cild is tis for? Is te topic rigt for te age? Developmentally appropriate? Is it really for kids? 2 Will it result in a cild tinking? And feeling? And doing? 3 Will it generate dialogue between adult and cild? Will eac be better off aving read it? 4 Is tis original? Smart? Interesting? Funny? Fun for adults, as well as kids? 5 Can it be read on several levels? Does it add up to more tan its words? 6 Wat else exists on tis topic? A lot? A little? Noting? (If noting, beware!) 7 Is it different and better tan someting else tat s like it? 8 Do I ear a voice? Is te sound good? 9 Is it about a teme I care about: separation and reunion, loss, growt and cange, rivalry, envy, jealousy, delaying gratification, fear, mastery, independence-dependence 10 Would a cild like it? Is it wort a kid s time? Will it also resonate wit an adult? 11 Do visual images come to mind wat s in te text for an illustrator? Can I see te images in my ead? 12 Will BA earn back its investment in time and in money? 13 Will I learn someting new? Wat can I add to it? Does it recall someting I recognize from my cildood or te cildoods of oter cildren I know well? 14 Is tere potential for a collaborative relationsip wit te autor? Will te autor be open to te canges tat come after input from te illustrator? 15 Do I really want my staff to expend te energy it will take to get tis into print? 16 Has te autor done is/er omework ie, is te book wellresearced, wit an appropriate amount of text? 17 Has te autor done is/er omework in relation to Blue Apple? Is it really rigt for our brand? 18 Does te autor ave te ability to tolerate te discomfort of ambiguity tat is part and parcel of our uniquely Blue Apple collaborative process? 19 Will te book backlist and witstand te test of time? 20 Wat will linger after te last page is read and te book is closed? Books ave te capacity for personal cemistry wit teir readers So I ask tese twenty questions, in te ope of offering kids a cance to discover someting always on target, absolutely wortwile, and occasionally extraordinary All books, learning materials, and assessment sould be digital and interactive, tailored to eac student and providing feedback in real time Steve Jobs Te books Blue Apple publises are mostly used by cildren between te ages of one and eigt Jobs was not necessarily tinking of babies and prescoolers wen e argued for educational environments witout pysical books Rigt now, we know tat parents do not want more screen time for teir small cildren We know tat a book on a digital device revs a cild up at bedtime and is not useful for winding a cild down and putting im, or er, to sleep We know tat a prescooler on a device is more interested in swiping te screen and moving aead in te story tan e or se is in aving a dialogue about te content of an image on te screen Toug I disagree wit Steve Jobs pronouncement, e surely was a visionary wo transformed many industries and will transform ours as well We cannot be publisers, even for young cildren, witout aving a digital strategy And we cannot survive witout using Jobs as a model on ow to build a brand He, better tan anyone, knew ow to combine imagination wit feats of engineering and ow to set is products apart from oters Contributing someting tat adds to te flow is wat drove Steve Jobs It drives me, our autors and illustrators, and everyone wo works at Blue Apple Te song I Was Here, by Lynn Arens and Stepen Flaerty included in our book, Ligts on Broadway, says it perfectly: I say we yearn to leave someting tat lasts, To be known for wat little we ve done Men tell teir cildren te tales of teir pasts And eac man give is name to is son Someting in song or in story, Someting of love Someting of glory Someting tat won t fade away in a year Tis is my joy and my duty How I can leave Someting of beauty Someting tat time Cannot make disappear Someting to say I was ere! I don t tink any day is wort living witout tinking about wat you re going to eat next Nora Epron If I substitute publis for eat in te above one-liner, I ave te perfect way to begin wat I am going to publis next is on my mind all te time: How many titles? In wat genres and formats? For wat ages? Into wic market cannels? Most important, does te world need anoter cildren s book? And if I publis anoter, wat can Blue Apple offer tat s new? Different? Original? At a time wen most big publisers are skewing teir publising to te interests of older kids, I am still devoting a cunk of eac list to books for babies and toddlers I believe in giving tem te best possible books wit great art and developmentally appropriate content Wat s more, researc sows tat babies wo are read to speak sooner and better and are more successful wen tey begin scool In 2005, I concluded my publiser s letter wit Long live picture books! I ad participated in a panel discussion were most everyone agreed tat a good picture book resonates for bot te cild and te adult reader I expressed my belief tat tere are issues tat surface in cildood and continue trougout life: separation, loss, and reunion dependence, independence insecurity (including feelings of jealousy, envy, rivalry), security delayed gratification, instant gratification Te books tat ave te most powerful effect on cildren and adults ave at teir core at least one of te above-listed issues Te picture books on te Spring 2013 list were cosen because tey ave someting substantial at te center call it a kernel of significance tat makes tem wort te time of bot te adults and cildren wo read tem It s always elegant to end a piece by coming full circle, back to te beginning So ere s someting tat te late, great Ms Epron ad to say about books: Reading makes me feel like I ve accomplised someting, learned someting, become a better person Reading makes me smarter Reading is grist Reading is bliss Substitute te word publising for reading and I arrive at te perfect conclusion for tis piece! For te past five years, I ave been asked over and over again: Do you ave content available for e-books and/or apps? And my usual answer was: I ave content lots of it but it s not available From 2008 to 2011, I was approaced by dozens of developers from India, Cina, Korea, and many from te US I received dozens of s; I deleted every one of tem About l8 monts ago, a Korean company, CJ Educations, found me at te Frankfurt Book Fair Tey ten visited Blue Apple at our New Jersey offices Tey explained ow tey would approac our content, and after two monts of negotiations, I said, Yes! Yes to 20 Blue Apple backlist titles Wy did my no s cange into yeses? I was willing to provide content because te team from CJ agreed to: treat eac book as a one-off (tere is no template for all titles) maintain te design and font of te original work collaboratively sow work in progress give Blue Apple approvals on te final products My primary goal was to maintain te book as designed I requested tat te accompanying audio be read, wen possible, by a cild Te Read to Me version would include igligting of te text, wic would appear on te screen exactly te same as in te pysical book Furtermore, I asked tat tere not be too many touc points per page If tere are too many images to activate, a cild s focus on te storyline diminises Some storybook apps are more about enancing te ego of te developer, rater tan fostering te best interests of te cild I greatly appreciate tose tecies wo resist te impulse to overdo In addition to te reading of te story, eac digital download would include a song I was skeptical about te song, but CJ insisted After saring tese songs wit kids, I now firmly believe tat te text set to music enances te experience and is particularly good for cildren wo learn best troug auditory modalities Finally, eac download would ave an interactive game or an app (My definition of an app is a game) Our job was to make sure tat te game extended te book s content and was not just gratuitous To download te CJ Educations/Blue Apple apps, go online to te Apple store Harriet M Ziefert Publiser, Blue Apple Books Spring
