Lesson: 67 Numbers in Italian: 0 to 999 Part 1: 0 to 10 Italian numbers are relatively easy to learn and remember, but they no doubt present a few tricky aspects. You ve probably heard Italian numbers up to 10. But how s your pronunciation? Refer to the video for that, of course! Notes 0 Zero 1 Uno 2 Due 3 Tre 4 Quattro 5 Cinque 6 Sei 7 Sette 8 Otto 9 Nove 10 Dieci 1
Part 2: 11 to 20 These numbers are the trickiest to learn and remember, as they are quite unique. But they still have a pattern, so jot down whatever pattern you see, as well as anything you need to be careful of (double S in diciassette, for example). Notes 11 Un dici 12 Do dici 13 Tre dici 14 Quatt or dici 15 Quin dici 16 Se dici 17 Dicia ss ette 18 Dici otto 19 Dicia nn ove 20 Venti 2
Part 3: 21 to 99 That s where the fun begins! Numbers in Italian work pretty much the same as in English, so to create numbers from 21 onwards we just add all the components, one after the other, just like we do in English. 27 is ? Twenty + seven. In Italian this will be venti + sette = ventisette. The only thing you need to be careful about is any time you re adding 1 or 8 to 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 and 90. In all these cases we drop the final vowel of the tens, since both 1 and 8 start with a vowel ( uno, otto ). It s all about the sound! First, the tens: Notes 20 Venti 30 Trenta 40 Quar anta 50 Cinqu anta 60 Sess anta 70 Sett anta 80 Ott anta 90 Nov anta 3
And now the numbers from 20 to 29, so you see what I meant earlier! Notes 20 Venti 21 Ven tu no 22 Ventidue 23 Ventitr é 24 Ventiquattro 25 Venticinque 26 Ventisei 27 Ventisette 28 Ven to tto 29 Ventinove You see what happened to 21 and 28? Perfetto! Remember to do the same for 31, 38, 41, 48, 51, 58, 61, 68, 71, 78, 81, 88, 91 and 98! Also, did you spot the accent on the é of ventitré? Why is it there? Well, since the stress of numbers ending in tre is right on the final é, we have to mark it with an accent. It s an Italian thing! Why THAT accent, and not the other one we see on the verb form è (meaning is )? It s a technicality and I m sure most Italians wouldn t know this, but if you re curious it s got to do with whether that stressed E has an open ( è ) or closed ( é ) sound! There you go, now you know more than most Italians! 4
Your turn! Write down the numbers from 30 to 40. Try not to look at the previous pages!
And now Write down the numbers from 90 to 99. Remember to say them out loud too! More practice >>> I strongly suggest you spend a good ten minutes counting in Italian every day, at least for the first three weeks from learning new numbers. The best way to do this is to count your steps! Learn Italian and exercise at the same time! 6
Part 4: 100 to 999 Numbers keep being fairly easy once you reach 100. The word for 100 is cento. Can guess what the word for 200 is? Notes 100 Cento 200 Due cento 300 Tre cento 400 Quattro cento 500 Cinque cento 600 Sei cento 700 Sette cento 800 Otto cento 900 Nove cento Told you it was easy! No surprises there! Just remember that cento already means 100, so no need to say *un cento (which is incorrect). So, what happens when you don t have round numbers? Well, again, it works the same as English. We ll say the number for the hundreds, then whatever number is needed for the tens and units. Like so: 122 Centoventidue 378 Trecentosettantotto 915 Novecentoquindici 7
Oh mamma, those are long numbers! Yes, in Italian we write numbers as a single word, so they do get pretty big! But don t worry, we only really spell numbers out when they are small and part of a text (i.e. tre libri, cento giorni, etc), and when writing bank checks! Don t say that word... One thing to keep in mind is that it is not a good habit to say E ( and ) between hundreds and tens. Some people do, but it doesn t sound very good. So do not say: 633 seicento e trentatré But rather 633 seicentotrentatré This is also true when the tens are missing from the number: 602 seicentodue And NOT seicento e due There s something about 80 The number 80 has something special. Since it s the only number in the tens to start with a vowel well, it kinda messes things up, just a little. When this number (or any number based on 80) follows the hundreds (100, 200, 300 etc), we ll have to drop an O, otherwise we d just have too many! Check it out: 180 cent o + o ttanta = centottanta 781 settecent o + o ttantuno = settecentottantuno >> Just one O 8
This rule does NOT apply to cento when paired with other numbers starting with a vowel. It basically only happens when it s followed by a number in the 80 s. Go figure! 101 cent ou no 108 cent oo tto 111 cent ou ndici 301 trecent ou no 408 quattrocent oo tto 611 seicent ou ndici To wrap up Write down these numbers in Italian
Keys 30 trenta 31 trentuno 32 trentadue 33 trentatré 34 trentaquattro 35 trentacinque 36 trentasei 37 trentasette 38 trentotto 39 trentanove 30 quaranta 90 novanta 91 novantuno 92 novantadue 93 novantatré 94 novantaquattro 95 novantacinque 96 novantasei 97 novantasette 98 novantotto 99 novantanove 170 centosettanta 888 ottocentottantotto 391 trecentonovantuno 412 quattrocentododici 708 settecentootto 319 trecentodiciannove 211 duecentoundici 928 novecentoventotto 455 quattrocentocinquantacinque 516 cinquecentosedici 289 duecentottantanove 400 quattrocento 10
