Some of us have even decided to donate our bodies to the Great North Run this year, and we ll be telling you how you can be a part of the crowd giving ourselves (and Mo Farah) the send-off our hours of panting through the city s parks deserves. 3 NEWS NEWS A NEW BREW PUB TO CHEER US ALL, BABYSHAMBLES ON TOUR AND THE STARTING PISTOL IS FIRED ON GREAT NORTH RUN CULTURE PROGRAMME DEMON BARBER NEW PREMISES If you ve noticed that sharp increase in the number of very slick haircuts and facial trimmings in the city centre, or better yet got some yourself, then you ll be more than familiar with The Demon Barber. But the husband and wife duo clearly have expansion on their mind, as they ve recently upped stocks from High Bridge and reopened some gorgeous premises at 3 Grainger Street. BABYSHAMBLES One man anecdote machine, hat stand, and some-time musician Peter Doherty takes a break from denying rumours he s living with Macauley Caulkin to bring his Babyshambles band on tour this month. They ll be stopping off across the land as they look to promote their long awaited third studio album, and come to Newcastle s O2 Academy on 5th September. Tickets are priced at METRO REOPENING After the frantic geography revision that inevitably accompanies relying on a bus replacement service, Nexus are very pleased to announce that they ve completed the latest part of their 385 million modernisation of the system. The 27-day line closure between Haymarket, Airport and Four Lane Ends, has seen an impressive 6km of track replaced, and means there should be fewer delays and a ride that s smoother than a silk sock full of single malt. MUSIC SLASH ART All the best movements are underground, and this latest endeavour from the people who brought you Hoults Yard s Unit 44 is no exception. Set in a two-tier basement on Hood Street, Music Slash Art is a brand new daytime creative space that evolves into a haven of good drinks and great music by night, with displays from some of the best outsider artists on the planet adorning the walls. QUICK JOKE THIS GIRL SAID THAT SHE WAS SURE SHE RECOGNISED ME FROM THE VEGETARIAN CLUB SHE GOES TO. BUT I REALLY DON T THINK I VE MET HERBIVORE. QUICK QUESTION FAVOURITE SHOPS IN TOWN FOR A SPENDING SPLURGE? Fenwick and John Lewis with all their franchises, plus Accessorize, Topshop and Guess in Eldon Square. LYDIA KITE, 55, GOSFORTH THE BRIDGE TAVERN Nestled under the Tyne Bridge there s something new brewing (quite literally, as it happens). Newcastle s first ever brew pub is set to open its doors in the middle of September, and Wylam Brewery are on board to serve a bespoke range of craft ales. There ll also be some hearty British comfort food, albeit it with a modern twist we re told. Sounds lush right? Well, it s all being kept under wraps at present, but the super secret launch date will be announced on their website. WINE ST NICHOLAS With years of experience, an army of attentive pupils, and a seat on the Association of Wine Educators, Helen Savage is basically a Jedi Master of vino. Prospective apprentices (that s pretty much all of us) have the chance to join her on 4th September in St Nicholas Cathedral s Lantern Cafe, for an evening of wine tasting, artisan breads, and the sharing and swilling of her considerable knowledge. VIRAL VIDEO The Man With The Guitar In His Mouth You ve all seen beat-boxing, right? Well, instead of drum beats, one man can produce the sounds of a distorted, gritty, electric guitar with his mouth instead... TOM STADE RETURNS TO THE STAND Now that the Fringe is over for another year and Edinburgh City Council ponders what to do with thousands of discarded flyers, the various performing arts circles return to their usual routine of getting around the country and plying their trade. So, fresh off the back of his smash-hit run at the festival, Canadian superstar Tom Stade makes a welcome return to The Stand. Join him for a refreshingly laid-back and unconventional ethos on life on Tuesday 17th September. Tickets 15. GREAT NORTH RUN CULTURE With Bupa s mass excursion across the region getting everyone on their starting blocks, it means we re also about to fire the starting pistol on the unique celebration of sport and art that is the Great North Run Culture. Launching their programme of events at Northumbria University s Sports Central, the likes of the Tyneside Cinema, BALTIC, Sage Gateshead, Live Theatre and TWAM have put together a wonderful mix of artist talks, performances and exhibitions which run right through until October. MISS Hostess and DJ at Boulevard Newcastle Hi there Miss Rory. First off, how would you describe yourself to the uninitiated? I m your host and DJ at Boulevard. Seven foot of sheer glamour, intelligence, beauty and wit. And I like gin. Oh, and I m a huge star. You re the venue s hostess and DJ, what does a job like that entail? I m the mouthpiece of the operation. It s my job to make sure you re entertained in between numbers. It also entails me looking fabulous and being hilariously funny. Luckily that comes easily. Just don t ask for naff music or I ll come after you. Boulevard s now well into the swing of its Summer Show, what can you tell us about it? It s an evening of the best choreography, humour and showbiz this side of Vegas. Betty Legs Diamond and the Broadway Dancers have pulled out all of the stops to give you the ultimate night out in our gorgeous venue. What are the other strings to your bow? I ve been busy this year appearing at Gran Canaria Pride and hosting both Leeds and Newcastle Pride. I can cook, refuse to clean, and have photos on my phone of Prince Harry in Vegas. But you can t see them. How does Boulevard differ to other nights out in town? It s an evening of sheer glamour. The show s second to none. There s something for everyone no matter what age. I d defy anyone to leave without feeling uplifted. 4 5

4 FEATURE FEATURE THE BRITISH SCIENCE FESTIVAL: NEWCASTLE 7-12 THE BRITISH SCIENCE FESTIVAL IS SET TO TURN UP THE BUNSEN BURNER HEAT WHEN IT ARRIVES IN NEWCASTLE WITH A HOST OF STAR SPEAKERS AND AN EXPLOSIVE PROGRAMME OF OVER 250 EVENTS If the very thought of science conjures up slightly scary images of Bunsen burners, lab coats and flashbacks of dropping chemistry and physics at the first opportunity at school, then a festival dedicated to the subject is about to explode all that. Newcastle will host a science spectacular to remember from the 7th to 12th September when the prestigious British Science Festival arrives in town with more than a touch of razzmatazz. An action-packed programme of over 250 events is lined up for families, adults, professionals and school groups - and a host of famous faces will be sprinkling the event with plenty of stardust. Anyone else on that 5:2 fasting diet that everyone s seemingly talking about? Star speakers include the scientist and TV presenter Dr Michael Mosley who is credited with popularising the regime. He will be discussing the connection between food and ageing with Newcastle University s Dean for Ageing, 6 Professor Tom Kirkwood. Among other big-name draws are fertility expert Lord Robert Winston who will be talking about his latest interests in science. In a chat with NE1 magazine he tells us he supports the work of festivals like these as they help to de-mystify science. While space scientist Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock will be telling all from her very own parallel universe - on the latest in space exploration. And BBC Radio 2 DJ Simon Mayo even gets in on the act with the introduction of his children s science fiction novel Itch. So even those adults that developed an early aversion to laboratories and white coats will find plenty to engage and entertain. The six-day festival is one of Europe s biggest celebrations of science, engineering and technology. Events range from cuttingedge lectures and debates for adults, to hands-on activities for schools and families, as well as live music and comedy performances, theatre and exhibitions. The festival, organised annually by The British Science Association in partnership with a different host city, brings together hundreds of the UK s top scientists. Kate Sinclair, festival officer at the British Science Association, says: The programme boasts a total of over 250 interesting and intriguing events spanning everything from fun at the weekend with the family, nights out with friends and ways to explore the very latest research. Working with partners including hosts, Newcastle University, associate partners Northumbria University and Newcastle City Council and local institutions including the International Centre for Life, Great North Museum: Hancock and the Discovery Museum, the festival is a science showcase for the best the region and the UK has to offer. The fun and games kick off with a weekend dedicated to educating and entertaining families covering everything from freaky food of the future and walking FERTILE IMAGINATION Professor Robert Winston will be on familiar stomping ground when he returns to the city to give a lecture, having visited Newcastle a few times already this year. The fertility expert and popular TV presenter knows about the work at the Life Science Centre and indeed opened their IVF unit for them some years ago. I know John Burn (Professor of Clinical Genetics at Newcastle University) of course and I have been around the Life Science Centre. I like what they are doing. Prof Winston says he supports festivals like these as they help to de-mystify science. The British Science Association tries to promote public engagement but it caters for people of all ages. Prof Winston s talk is on 8th September, 8-9pm. Having tabled a Bill designed to produce transparency, making it clear that it is almost impossible to receive any licensed pharmaceutical without stringent tests using animals first, Prof Winston explains why and what happened. Venue: Curtis Auditorium, Herschel Building, Newcastle University BRITISH SCIENCE FESTIVAL: NEWCASTLE 7-12 SEP * See a selection of highlighted events in our listings section, page 22. on custard to a sleepover with a difference. Kids and their parents can camp overnight as part of the Night at the Museum at Great North Museum: Hancock. See our front cover image! Looking at the science behind, around and in-between bedtime and getting-up time, families will find out why we need sleep and why we dream. The sleepover runs on 7th September from 6pm until 10am the following day, and is suitable for children aged The British Science Festival returns to Newcastle for the seventh time in its 174-year history and the programme is packed with events to interest and inspire - no matter what your age or level of scientific knowledge. Over 250 events are taking place across the city. See full programme and book tickets at STARS IN HER EYES Space scientist Dr Maggie Aderin- Pocock, one of the star speakers at the festival, says she will posing questions like: Where are we with space exploration? and what is the next big thing that we hope to find out? in what promises to be a journey of discovery. Dr Aderin-Pocock has worked on projects from the Gemini Observatory in South America, to the James Webb space telescope, Hubble s replacement. She has given talks to over 120,000 school pupils in the last few years and adds: The younger kids love talking about space. You start talking about aliens and what we might find out in space and you can see their eyes light up! She finds festivals like this one make the subject more accessible. We try to get rid of the terminology and use the right language. I love doing demos. It s good to hear the audience s ideas. Maggie, 45, lives in Guildford, but loves visiting Newcastle. I have been a number of times. I give a series of lectures every year to GCSE students. I usually stay overnight and do a bit of shopping. I like the city, it s very dynamic and has got a buzz to it. Dr Aderin-Pocock s talk is on 7 September, 6pm to 7pm. Venue: Curtis Auditorium, Herschel Building, Newcastle Uni. Ages 12+ 7

5 STAGE FEATURE LIVING THE DREAM Ballet fans should shake a leg down to the Theatre Royal for Northern Ballet s revival of the Olivier-nominated dance version of A Midsummer Night s Dream. The Leeds-based company will perform this dream of a production, an imaginative and playful take on Shakespeare s magical comedy, complete with sumptuous costumes, from 17 to 21 September. This tale involves a train journey like no other as the romantic antics of a touring dance company are played out on a sleeper train from London to Edinburgh. Artistic temperaments clash with romantic entanglements and as the company settles down for the night, the train enters a tunnel and the dream begins. It is choreographed by artistic director David Nixon and his Dior-inspired costumes and stylish black and white sets are in stark contrast to the glorious technicolour of the dream world. David explains: My version of A Midsummer Night s Dream is about young dancers and the passions and tribulations that a young touring company get themselves entangled in. I always enjoy seeing the reaction of the audience to this ballet. It s great to hear them laughing! The ballet is very playful and uplifting and I think many people are pleasantly surprised to see so much humour captured in dance. Whilst visiting the Theatre Royal, Northern Ballet will also perform a short, child-friendly retelling of the Hans Christian Anderson fairytale, Ugly Duckling. A perfect opportunity to introduce little ones to live ballet, music and theatre. PEOPLE ARE SURPRISED TO SEE SO MUCH HUMOUR CAPTURED IN DANCE Northern Ballet s A Midsummer Night s Dream appears at Newcastle Theatre Royal from September. Northern Ballet s Ugly Duckling is showing on Friday 20 September only, at 11am and 1pm. YOU NEED EYES LIKE A GEKKO PAUL DIXON NEWCASTLE FOOTBALL PUNDIT The sermon this month is cyclists. I used to be one when blood would run round my legs, rather than congregate at my feet. I graduated to a car, I had to really, from resembling a Tour-de-France Spandexed whippet, I started to look like a darts player after paintballing in a Durex onesie. However, I digress. I find myself as a pedestrian mainly now, after a local garage mixed up my repair bill with their telephone number. Let me tell you, early morning Newcastle is like being buzzed by wasps. Even pedestrian areas like Northumberland Street, you need eyes like a gekko. I don t know whether there is a perception amongst the budding Bradley Wigginses, that traffic signs or signals that don t correspond with your cycling outfit can be ignored, or they don t become admissible whilst there is an a in the day, but if motorists took the same bohemian attitude to road rules, there d be carnage. This isn t to say that motorists are perfect, far from it, but as Newcastle is a city that treats motorists as mobile ATMs, with their bewildering array of traffic signs, at least they have the excuse of having to look in 30 directions at once. I once witnessed a cyclist slalom down a Haymarket pavement, pedal over the pedestrian crossing and then belt up the bus lane the wrong way! A motorist committing a litany of offences of that gravity, wouldn t be released until the oil runs out. I know most cyclists are responsible road users, but it isn t a board game out there folks. I know the risks of the road, but there s something vaguely shaming about having to breakdance along the pavement at 57 years old. So if you don t behave, I ll get my Spandex cycling suit back out, and see what that does for cycling street cred. blackadderboy@yahoo.co.uk GREAT NORTH RUN Normally, the sight of over 50,000 red-faced individuals hot-footing it through town means that a late kick-off in the Newcastle match has left only 15 minutes until last orders. However, once a year, we have the Bupa Great North Run to thank for that, and it s now proudly the world s biggest and most iconic half-marathon. Along with the tens of thousands of hopeful amateurs, running enthusiasts, and men with fridges on their back, Sunday 15th September sees Olympic and world champion Mo Farah pacing his way across the region, along with various other celebrities like DJ Jo Whiley, newsreader Sophie Raworth and Blue Peter s Helen Skelton. They ll all be making their way across the iconic Tyne Bridge before turning onto the Felling Bypass, heading toward the coast, before finally arriving at the finish line in South Shields some 13.1 miles later. But what makes the Great North Run so unique is the fantastic reception given to the runners across the route, most of all at the start in Newcastle. Would-be spectators/ cheerleaders/paramedics can line up to give their support a mere 10-minute walk from Haymarket Metro Station, by following the To the Start signs. On your marks... MO FARAH, JO WHILEY AND SOPHIE RAWORTH WILL BE PACING THE REGION 8 9

6 TALKS/WORKSHOPS HISTORY BROUGHT TO LIFE Unleash your inner historian with tours of the city s architectural and cultural gems through the Tyne and Wear Heritage Open Days programme. Fascinating walks, talks and tours are planned and buildings, some of which are usually closed to the general public, are flinging open their doors for the annual event from September. And even better, you won t have to scrape together your shillings for this history-brought-to-life fixture, as all events are free. How about joining a guided heritage walk around Victorian Leazes Park? Or maybe a behind-the-scenes tour of the City Hall, Newcastle s first dedicated concert venue, strikes a chord. Other highlights include a visit to Newcastle s Guildhall Grade I listed building, sure to have a captive audience, complete with its prisoner s cage. As well as a talk on the making of miners banners and a tour of the historic Swing Bridge, taking in the pump and engine room, churches and theatres will all be offering tours. Dig this! Visitors can even venture into the Victoria Tunnel at Ouseburn. The former coal waggon-way was used to transport coal to the River Tyne and later became an air raid shelter in WWII. The national Heritage Open Days celebrate England s fantastic architecture and culture by offering free access to properties usually closed to the public or which normally charge for admission. This is the 12th year for Tyne and Wear Heritage Open Days, sponsored by the Port of Tyne, and 204 tours, talks, activities and buildings are confirmed as opening or taking place in the county 57 of which are in Newcastle. 10 VISITORS CAN EVEN VENTURE INTO THE VICTORIA TUNNEL Booklets are available in Tourist Information Centres and libraries and online at QUICK QUESTION WHERE S YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE FOR A SCONE STOP IN TOWN? A COMPERE S JOB IS TO BUILD A NIGHT TO PLAY WITH TONY JAMESON THE STAND COMEDIAN Are you a comedian too? It seems strange to start this article with what would appear to be a firmly rhetorical question. However, this is a question that gets asked of comperes up and down the country, by very drunk, confused audience members. I did a gig in a cinema, in an industrial estate in Coventry (yes, that s right, I ve hit the big time). And the audience weren t the most pleasant, shall we say. I was compering that night, and when I went to wrap the show up by asking for applause for the three acts, a woman s hand went up in the air and she said: Excuse me, it was advertised as four acts? Clearly this woman hadn t figured out that the compere (me) was a comedian as well. Naturally, I said: Well, there s been three acts, and myself as compere. To which she then replied: Oh, are you a comedian too? This was quite galling given the fact that I d had as good a gig as was possible in that environment. I replied to her: Yes love, I am. Did you think they d just spotted me outside and figured I might be able to tell a joke or two? This is the thing. Every compere has had those kinds of moments, or the Oh we thought you were funny tonight, have you ever thought about doing stand up? A friend of mine, Martin, once said to me, that the compere should be the strongest act on the bill as they could feasibly fit anywhere. A compere s job is to build a night for the audience and the acts to play with. They take it from nothing. They pick it up when an act bombs. They keep the energy going when an act does well. The comperes give the night its own unique feel. And yes, they are comedians. Usually, really good ones. * You can next see Tony compering The Stand on 12th, 13th and 14th September or follow him on YOUR COMPREHENSIVE LISTINGS GUIDE TO WHAT S ON IN NEWCASTLE CITY CENTRE THIS FORTNIGHT ART PERMANENT EXHIBITIONS BFI Mediatheque. Just to keep you going that little bit longer though, our next issue happens to coincide with World Cities Week, so we ve got even more of an excuse to make a big song and dance about Newcastle. Plus, we ll even be blowing our own trumpets somewhat, and having a look back at the wacky, wonderful, and worthwhile things that NE1 has thrown together during its tenure. Be sure to join us, but maybe bring a coat this time.
