The Boiler Shop Steamer on Sussex Street is a varied mix of live music, street food and cinema that explores and celebrates our new found pop-up culture Who s behind the event? The event was born from various conversations between myself and Matt Boyle of Wylam Brewery after the realisation there was a market for such an event Who do you think it s going to appeal to? We are hoping the event will appeal to a wide range of social groups and the Friday event will undoubtedly draw a different crowd to the Saturday. Generally we imagine it will appeal to people who like new things in new/different environments What have you got in store for May s event? May s food line-up isn t yet confirmed. However we do hope to pull another gem out of the bag like Angus Denoon from The Everybody Love Love Jhal Muri Express! The music will have a bluesy flavour The space seems pretty unique, what was the thinking behind using it? It is a unique space, we have chosen it partly from experience of events in the space mixed with the owners, Silverlink Holdings, long term goals of it becoming a melting pot of good food and culture and the arts What else is in the pipeline? 4 FEATURE MAKER FAIRE UK THE GREATEST SHOW AND TELL ON EARTH IS COMING TO NEWCASTLE AND YOU WON T WANT TO MISS A MINUTE OF THIS PACKED WEEKEND! Maker Faire is a two day family friendly festival of invention, creativity and resourcefulness taking place at the Centre For Life on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th April. Bringing together a diverse range of makers, doers and creators, Maker Faire aims to challenge, excite and ignite a spark of inspiration, no matter what your age. This is the fourth Maker Faire held at Centre For Life, and chief executive Linda Conlon describes what makes this year s event so exciting. Attendees will have a lot more opportunities to get their hands dirty! As well as making things like LED badges, UV torches, bicycle spirograph pictures and solar system bracelets, there ll be soldering classes where you can build your own lie detector and kit building sessions where you can make a range of gadgets including a solar powered light that flashes when your plants need watering! Hoping visitors will be entertained, enlightened and inspired to explore science further, Maker Faire has also teamed up with The National Museum Of Computing in a bid to demonstrate the creative side of computing and increase its appeal with young people. And no, that doesn t mean playing Skyrim all day. The partnership is designed to plug a recognised gap in the national curriculum, which lacks a significant focus on computer skills development, visitors will be able to 6 QUICK JOKE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN FROGS PARK ILLEGALLY? THEY GET TOAD PAUL HARROD, 55, BENSHAM try programming BASIC on vintage Acorn computers and play classic videogames on their original hardware. There will also be the opportunity to build mini-computers with Pimoroni Super-Villain Centre for Excellence and explore Team Molanie s mix of craft and electronics, such as the knitted Borg Clanger. The Creative Exchange will be creating a digital public space where visitors can explore and create using online media; Newcastle University s Culture Lab will exhibit a range of physical computing tools allowing people to interact with computers through the objects around them; while MusicRadar step sequencer allows visitors to create their own rhythms and beats naturally. I m like a kid in a candy shop trying to pick out my favourites! Says Linda. I m intrigued to see the 3D printed action dolls the Makies you can design them in your likeness and programme them to do things...my own action doll, now there s a thought! I m also excited to see the Mars Rover demo model too. Add to all this animated pole dancers and robot DJs, a LEGO robot that draws words and pictures in pancakes on an electric griddle and not to mention dinosaur cloning a la Jurassic Park, and you ve got a pretty exciting mixture of entertainment. That s not to mention the appearance of Dale Dougherty, one of Barack Obama s champions of VISITORS WILL BE ENTERTAINED, ENLIGHTENED AND INSPIRED TO EXPLORE SCIENCE FURTHER change and the founder of the Maker Faire concept, who will be in attendance for the first time. Maker Faire really is an ideal opportunity to inspire a younger generation to interact and engage with science in a fun and natural way, and Linda hopes everyone can be motivated into exploring further. Maker Faire is the greatest show and tell event on earth, a gathering of people who love making things and who want to share their enthusiasm with others. Hopefully that enthusiasm will rub off, inspiring and enthusing people to explore, be curious, discover how things work and see where science can take them. The fun doesn t end when the event packs up and goes home though, as Linda s keen to ensure there s a permanent place for makers alongside the Centre s already innovative and playful programme. We hope to create our own permanent maker space in the Science Centre. She says. We want to create a space where creativity and curiosity is encouraged and nurtured Maker Faire UK takes place on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th April at the Centre For Life, Times Square, Newcastle. For tickets head to faireuk.com FEATURE and where ideas can flourish. Being creative, innovative and resourceful is in our genes. From the great industrialists such as Lord Armstrong, Joseph Swan and George and Robert Stephenson to Northumbria University graduate Sir Jonathan Ive, Newcastle has a history of engineering, technology and creativity. Tickets for the event cost 8.25 per adult, with a family ticket costing just In these tough economic times, it s never been more important to invest in learning and creativity. It s especially important for the region. We are experiencing a new wave of technology and within the region there are people and businesses who are incredibly innovative, but we need to plug the skills gap if we are to fully grasp the opportunities that are open to us. Maker Faire can hopefully ignite a spark and open young people s eyes to the fascinating career options that science can lead to. getintonewcastle.co.uk/nfw Delivered by Sponsored by /NikkiLissoniUK In partnership As part of 7

5 MUSIC HALF TYNESIDE CINEMA Collaborations are all the rage these days, but the alliance of creativity and gusto from the Tyneside Cinema and Pixel Palace is arguably the most impressive in the entire city at the moment. The cinematic Ant to the broadcasting Dec, if you will. Their next endeavour, sees a unique audio-visual performance from illustrious North East musicians Warm Digits and Richard Dawson, who are taking inspiration from Tyne & Wear Museums & Archive collections to create what should be some very exciting new compositions. Devised by Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums, in partnership with Tusk Music and Pixel Palace (see, collaborations), the project sees the electronic infused Warm Digits create a stunning film using digital stills and found footage of a huge civic engineering project in the 1970s, creating a hypnotic soundtrack to accompany it. Meanwhile, Richard Dawson will be injecting his delirious acoustic delights into a magical album inspired by photographs, letters, newspapers and illustrations from obscure North East tales. The artists offer up a live performance at the Tyneside Cinema on Sunday 28th April MY TOP FIVE ADAM PATRICKS 6, NEWCASTLE TOP 5 FAVOURITE THINGS TO DRESS UP AS IN NEWCASTLE 1. 6 FEATURE 10 HIGH BRIDGE FESTIVAL To some, High Bridge is merely a convenient cobbled shortcut across the city centre. Scything its way from Pilgrim Street, through to the shops and restaurants of Grey Street, and then finally offering safe passage through to the Bigg Market, it s something of a nice detour for those who know their way around. But anyone who has picked their head up on such a trip will have noticed the fantastic array of independent retailers and cultural attractions that adorn either side of the path. From record shops, to vintage clothing, to the city s home of stand-up comedy, and BALTIC s second home, it s quietly become an artistic haven for those tired of the usual shopping faire. So, to coincide with Record Store Day, the celebrations of which already focus round there, the High Bridge Quarter (think of them as The Avengers of shops) are throwing the High Bridge Festival on Saturday 20th April, and after the success of last year s event, it looks set to be a wonderful full day of entertainment for all. From global street food, live music and face painters, to the shops themselves offering up generous discounts, the festivities run all day from 10am. So next time you re skipping down the back streets in a hurry, take a moment to consider if you re actually in a hub of retail resourcefulness. QUICK QUESTION WHAT S YOUR FAVOURITE HIDING PLACE IN NEWCASTLE? In the crowd in St James Park JOJO BULLICK, 10, GOSFORTH BANK HOLIDAY WOES PAUL DIXON NEWCASTLE FOOTBALL PUNDIT BLACKADDERBOY@ YAHOO.CO.UK I don t know what prompted the correlation between Bank Holiday routines and thousands of dead Puffins being washed up on British coasts, but here we are. My earliest Bank Holiday memories are from the days when it was a three car street, not household, so days out didn t happen. I sat and ate Easter eggs until my blood turned to cocoa, and my sugar levels attained atomic status. Post pubescent Bank Holidays when a carefree, boulevardier, were spent carousing round local pubs. The good lord would have approved of this homage to his reincarnation I feel, as we didn t associate with money lenders although I can t say the same for fallen women. Into married parenthood, and it s away into the interior of wonder that is rural Northumberland, trying to educate two truculent children the joys of the rural idyll on their doorstep, and also explain why those two cows weren t very good at leapfrog. Stopping at a village pub for some hearty countryside fare, finding that the car park was like Tesco s on Christmas Eve, and price list made Harrods look like Poundland. In the spirit of faux democracy, and to stop the kids from mauling each other, we devised a game. They would take it in turns to select a route at every junction, and see where it lead us. We ended up at Edinburgh zoo one year. The Bank Holidays now are spent watching 40 mile tailbacks on the news, as desperate families naively assume that everybody else will stay at home because of the queues, and watching Carry On Don t Lose Your Head for the sixtieth time. It isn t as much fun as touring Northumberland, but it certainly beats looking at the rear end of a laden Vauxhall Astra, and even Edinburgh Zoo to be honest. THE LIVING ROOM NEW MENU & CHARITY EVENT The Living Room, Newcastle s effortlessly cool piano bar and restaurant based on Grey Street, has a double burst of good news for you all. Not only are they pulling back the lid on the silver platter of a glorious new menu, but they re also doing their whack for some good causes. First of all, the menu. Those behind it are most excited to announce that an overhaul of their already exciting range is nearing completion, with quirky and adventurous new dishes complimenting fresh and inventive takes on their classics. QUICK JOKE HOW DO YOU WAKE UP LADY GAGA? POKE HER FACE MANDY FRENCH, 33, HEATON But the new menu is merely an appetiser of news, as the main course is the terrific work they re about to undertake with the United Nations Foundation s global Nothing But Nets Campaign. A global initiative set on ridding the world of malaria. Coinciding with World Malaria Day on Thursday 25th April, the snazzily titled event The Living Room Creates A Buzz To Fight Malaria will see a host of live performances from local acts. As well as the all important raising of awareness, it also aims to raise funds for the distribution of long-lasting, FOOD insecticidetreated bed nets to families across sub-saharan Africa. In keeping with the venue s reputation for a bit of flair and panache, special Mosquito Mojitos are being dreamt up to help boost funds. 1 from the sale of each cocktail will be donated to the campaign, which we re relieved to report won t taste anything like mosquitoes. 11

7 SPORTS SPORTS INJURY CLINIC EXPANSION With the unfortunate news that Newcastle City Pool had to close down, the folks over at Newcastle Sports Injury Clinic are still up and running and are even expanding into the space the closure has left behind. The clinic, founded in 1997, has a reputation for high quality healthcare, used by professionals and amateurs alike. Located upstairs in the City Pool, it would be easy to assume the whole place is closing down but with the front doors still open it s business as usual. The new facilities mean the clinic can offer sport specific conditioning; like ski fit and golf fit to make sure sport specific muscles are trained and healthy. Support is being extended to runners too, with a Running School set to launch soon. Seasoned Triathlon competitor Tony Douglas will be on hand to offer advice on running from beginners to experts, looking at everything from technique to mapping out a tailored training programme. This on top of a fancy new machine which tells you all you need to know about how to improve your running style, economy of energy and even if you re wearing the right shoes. More details can be found on their website. WHO ARE WE SEEING AGAIN? TONY JAMESON YOU CAN FOLLOW ME ON TWITTER IF YOU So this is my first article I ve written for NE1, and it comes at a time when the majority of comedians are going through the most worrying moments of their year...our Edinburgh festival tickets have gone on sale. I m taking my debut solo show to the Edinburgh Festival in August at The Stand Comedy Club, and as my tickets went on sale this week, I m curious as to who would be buying tickets to come and see me for an hour. I can t imagine someone seeing my name in a brochure and then them saying Oh my god, we need to get tickets to see Tony Jameson. I was amazed to realise that I sold nearly 120 tickets for recent comedy festival shows in Leicester and Glasgow and this got me thinking, how have I done this? I ve not been on any TV shows. I don t have a particular local fan base in these cities. In fact, I didn t even have a single poster or flyer up. I realised that I actually sold the vast majority of my tickets through Twitter. My show is called Football Manager Ruined My Life, and I found that whenever I tweeted about the show, the company responsible for making the game have been retweeting this on my behalf, opening up my appeal beyond comedy fans, to fans of the game. On the face of it, these may not be your regular comedy club goers, but they are turning up to the shows, laughing in the right bits, and enjoying a night of stand up. Sure, some of the references are niche in order to stick with the title of the show, but I was conscious whilst writing the show that I needed to keep the underlying theme broad enough to attract audiences who have never played the game. Will this work? I guess only time will tell. I hope that I m not alienating potential audience due to the title, but I suppose if people are turning up to comedy regardless of who s on, then I guess that s a good thing. Tickets for my show are available through my website or via The Stand /fringe YOUR COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE TO WHAT S ON IN NEWCASTLE CITY CENTRE THIS FORTNIGHT ART PERMANENT EXHIBITIONS BFI Mediatheque. University Gallery, Northumbria University, Sandyford Road, Newcastle. UNTIL SATURDAY 18TH MAY Ruben Grilo The Need For Speed. Ruben Grilo (Lugo, 1981) makes use of conceptual and narrative strategies in order to question the statute of objectives and images, through mediums as diverse as software of digital presentation, laser projection, found art, performance and installation. The installation consists of a number of autonomous drawing devices, growing week by week to mirror the passage of time. Operating continuously throughout the three month exhibition period, each of these Timecasts will trace out a delicate graphite form on the paper it rests on. Laing Gallery, New Bridge Street, Newcastle. UNTIL WEDNESDAY 22ND MAY Ed Ruscha: Artists Rooms On Tour. Laing Gallery, New Bridge Street, Newcastle. UNTIL SUNDAY 23RD JUNE Matt Calderwood: Paper Over The Cracks. Matt Calderwood is known for his often perilous performances, sculpture and film works. For his solo exhibition at BALTIC 39, his first in a public gallery in the UK, Calderwood will create a series of ambitious new sculptures which explore decaying and collapsing systems and the impact of environment and process on simple everyday materials.
