1 SIGHTLINES T H E M U N I N E W S L E T T E R Presidentʼs Message: JOIN US FOR THE MUNIʼS 2017 SEASON! Even as we brave the ice storms and frigid winds of mid-winter, the days are slowly lengthening and the anticipation for the beginning of The Muni season is building. Show staffs and The Muni Board are already busy preparing for a great season. We are excited to bring three new shows to our beautiful lake side stage with Roald Dahl s Willy Wonka, Disney and Cameron Mackintosh s Mary Poppins, and Irving Berlin s White Christmas. We conclude our season with the ever popular Grease. The Muni Magic kicks off with the Muni Auditions Workshop which will be held on Saturday, Feb. 18th at the. (Children s workshop at 10AM, Adults at 1PM). These workshops are a great opportunity to meet the show directors and staffs, learn about the roles that will be available, and get some tips on how to prepare and perform a great audition. You will also be first in line to lock in your audition time before they open to the general public. With this wonderful slate of shows and classic roles, we are expecting a big turnout for auditions. I am happy to report that directors expect to cast nearly 50 roles from children s auditions. More information on the shows and roles available are included in this edition of Sightlines. If the performance of these great shows alone is not enough, The Muni has additional magic planned for this year. The production of Roald Dahl s Willy Wonka marks The Muni s 200th show since taking the lake side stage in We plan to celebrate this occasion with a Family Reunion where members of the previous 199 shows are invited to wear their favorite show shirt and join us on opening weekend, June The Muni also plans to celebrate Christmas in July with our performance of Irving Berlin s White Christmas. The Muni site will be festively decorated and there may be a jolly surprise visitor to greet patrons before the show. The Muni will also be introducing Muni Mayhem in October which will include a haunted trail and a continuous on-stage show. The Muni is grateful for the hundreds of individuals who volunteer to ready our facility and help bring our shows to life on the stage. Their assistance is vital and sincerely appreciated. These friends rake leaves, spread mulch, build, paint and move sets, sew costumes, apply make-up, clean seats, serve food and do their best to help patrons enjoy our shows. We invite you to join this group of volunteers by visiting the Volunteer at the Muni tab on our website at TheMuni.org. and sharing your interest with us. Volunteering at The Muni is a great way to make new friends and help a worthwhile cause. We are honored to have the support of a special group of individuals called the Backstagers. The charitable contributions we receive from the Backstagers are an enormous help to the organization. There are added benefits to being a Backstager...along with our sincere gratitude, Backstagers can receive season passes, enjoy premium parking and priority ticket ordering. Information on being a Backstager can be found on the Support Us/Backstagers tab on The Muni website. Special Thanks go to our season show sponsors: Springfield Clinic, UCB and 2017 SEASON: Springfield Clinic presents: JUNE UCB and Illini Bank present: JUNE 30-JULY Edward Jones presents: Illini Bank,Edward Jones, and RSM. Audition time slots will be filled in the order they are received. Helpful hint! If you are auditioning for a role that requires a separate dance audition, it is strongly recommended that you do your vocal audition first followed by your dance audition that same day. Our dance auditions go very quickly and it is easier for choreographers to recognize you (and remember what shows and parts you are interested in) if you have gone through the vocal audition process first. Those who sing first and dance second on the same day definitely have an upper hand when it comes to casting! WHAT TO EXPECT THE DAY OF YOUR AUDITION ADULT AUDITIONS CHILDREN S AUDITIONS Callbacks: March 12th Callbacks: March 19th March 4, 5 & 11 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 18 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. A DULT AUDITIONS take place in hour long sessions; vocal/movement auditions are separate from dance auditions. Plan to check in at the registration table at least 45 minutes prior to your scheduled audition time, allowing time for the vocal warm-ups before the actual audition The Muni provides accompanists for all vocal auditions, so please bring sheet music suitable for piano accompaniment. In closed auditions with a small group of other auditionees, each auditionee will perform a short (2 minutes or less) song of his or her choosing. Auditionees may be asked to read from a script provided by the directors. Basic movement auditions, done in a group, take place at the end of the audition time slot. WANT TO LEARN MORE? Visit TheMuni.org to see additional information for auditioning at The Muni! Only auditionees who participate in the hour long, separate dance audition are exempt from the movement audition. Some roles require auditionees to participate in a full dance audition. This is largely based upon the demands of the role for which the adult is auditioning or for which the director is considering him/ her. (Consult the Parts Available section of Sightlines to see what parts require dance.) Hourlong dance auditions are scheduled separately from vocal auditions. C HILDREN S AUDITIONS take place in twohour long sessions; During the first hour, Muni staff will teach auditionees a simple song and dance. The jack-of-all trades, Bert introduces us to England in 1910 and the troubled Banks family. Young Jane and Michael have sent many a nanny packing before Mary Poppins arrives on their doorstep. Using a combination of magic and common sense, she must teach the family members to value each other again. Mary Poppins takes the children on many magical and memorable adventures, but Jane and Michael aren t the only ones upon whom she has a profound effect. Even grown-ups can learn a lesson or two from the nanny who advises that Anything can happen if you let it. Auditionees should prepare a 2 minute maximum vocal piece that will highlight their singing ability similar to the style of Mary Poppins, and please be prepared to read a small amount of dialogue that shows character development. 33

4 The directing staff will be casting adult and 2-6 children roles. Auditionees must take part in either the Movement or Dance portion of auditions; characters requiring Dance have been noted below. In addition, there is a fun tap number in the show, and we ask all required Dance auditionees participate in the tap audition during dance auditions. Mary Poppins: (Vocal Range Gb3-C6/ Dance/Female/Age 20-?) Jane and Michael Banks new nanny. She is extraordinary and strange, neat and tidy, delightfully vain yet particular, and sometimes a little frightening but always exciting. She is practically perfect in every way and always means what she says. A mezzo soprano sound, but precision and diction is the key. Jane Banks (Vocal Range A3-F#5/ Dance/Female/Age 11-?) The high spirited daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Banks, is bright and precocious but can be willful and inclined to snobbishness. Michael Banks (Vocal Range A3-E5/ Dance/Male/Age 9-?) The cute and cheeky son of Mr. and Mrs. Banks. Excitable and naughty, he adores his father and tries to be like him. Both he and Jane misbehave in order to get the attention of their parents. George Banks (Vocal Range Bb2-Eb4/ Male/Age 40-?) The father to Jane and Michael Banks, is a banker to the very finger of his being. Demanding precision and order in his household, he is a pipe-and-slippers man who doesn t have much to do with his children and believes that he had the perfect upbringing by his nanny, the cruel Miss Andrew. His emotional armor, however, conceals a sensitive soul. A baritone, George may speak-sing as necessary. Bert (Vocal Range B2-F#4/Dance/ Male/Age 30-?) The narrator of the story, is a good friend to Mary Poppins. An everyman, Bert has many occupations, including hurdy-gurdy player, sidewalk artist and chimney sweep. Bert watches over the children as well as the goings-on in Cherry Tree Lane. He has charm, speaks with a Cockney accent and is a song-and-dance man. Mrs. Winifred Banks (Vocal Range A3D5/Female/Age 30-?) George s wife and Jane and Michael s mother. A former actress, she is a loving and distracted homemaker who is busy trying to live up to her husband s desire to only associate with the best people as well as be the model wife and mother. She suffers from the conflicting feelings that she s not up to the job of being Mrs. Banks, yet, she is, and more. She has great warmth and simplicity to her tone. Admiral Boom (No Vocal/Male/Age 50-?) A retired Royal Navy man and neighbor of the Banks family. A physically large man with a loud and booming voice, he speaks in Navy jargon and has a soft spot for his neighbor, Miss Lark. Can be any vocal range as needed. If Admiral Boom doubles as the Banks Chairman, he can be a baritone. May be cast as Bank Chairman as well. Bank Chairman (Vocal Range C3-D4/ Male/Age 50-60) The head of the bank where Mr. Banks is employed, is an Edwardian stuffedshirt. He can speak/sing his lines if necessary. May be cast as Admiral Boom as well. Katie Nanna (No Vocal/Female/Age 30-?) Jane and Michael s nanny at the beginning of the show overwhelmed and upset, she has absolutely had her fill of the Banks children. Miss Andrew (Vocal Range Gb3-F5/ Female/Age 40-?) George s overbearing and scary nanny. With her bottle of nastytasting brimstone and treacle to keep naughty children in line, she is a bully who only knows one way of doing things-her way. A soprano with an alto belt, there can be some heaviness to her voice along with range. Miss Lark (No Vocal/ Female/Age 30-?) Von Hussler (No Vocal/Male/Age 30-?) A businessman seeking a loan from the bank for shady business deal. He speaks with a German accent. May also be cast in ensemble. Ensemble (Various Vocal Ranges/Dance/ Male & Female/Various ages) Annie, Fannie, Valentine, Teddy Bear, Mr. Punch, Doll, Chimney Sweeps, Toys, Parkgoers. The haughty next-door neighbor of the Banks family who treats her dog, Willoughby, as if he were her child. Mrs. Brill (Vocal Range F#3-D#5/ Female/Age 50-?) The housekeeper and cook for the Banks family. Overworked and harassed, she s always complaining that the house is understaffed. Her intimidating exterior is a cover for the warmth underneath. Mrs. Brill doesn't have a high opinion of nannies in general and Mary Poppins in particular. She does not have to be a strong singer. Mrs. Corry (No Vocal/Female/Age 40-?) Owns a magical gingerbread shop. She is a mysterious woman of great age who speaks with a Caribbean accent (or any accent that would make her seem exotic). Joe-Michael Jackson & Elizabeth Cheney JULY Rehearsals Start MAY 30 Neleus (No Vocal/Dance/Male/Age 16-?) Rehearsals will be Sun.-Thurs. The statue of a young boy posed with a dolphin in the park. Neleus was separated from his father, Poseidon, and misses him very much. A small and lonely being, he is very happy to befriend Jane and Michael. This role is a wonderful opportunity to feature one of the strong dancers in your ensemble. DIRECTORS: Joe-Michael Jackson & Elizabeth Cheney ASSISTANT DIRECTOR: Taryn Grant VOCAL DIRECTOR: Becky Kemp CHOREOGRAPHER: Elizabeth Cheney & Taryn Grant Robertson Ay (Vocal Range F3-G#4/ Male/Age 20-?) The houseboy to the Banks Celebrate Christmas in July when White Christmas makes its debut at The Muni! family. Lazy, sleepy and grumbling, he never gets things right and believes himself to be useless. He doesn t do a lot of singing, but his spoonful solo can be a fun surprise. Bird Woman (Vocal Range Gb3-C5/ Female/Age 50-?) Covered in a patchwork of old shawls, and her pockets are stuffed with bags of crumbs for the birds. She tries to sell her crumbs to passerby, who ignore her as if she doesn t exist. Sings Feed the Birds. There can be a gruff, folksy quality to her voice that reflects the hardness of her life. Park Keeper (No Vocal/Male/Age 40-?) Uniformed and officious, he makes sure no one breaks park regulation. His life is defined by rules, but he secretly hankers after his childhood. Policeman (No Vocal/Male/Age 30-?) A neighborhood fixture who is respected by and observant of households on his beat. May also be cast in ensemble. John Northbrook (No Vocal/Male/ Age 30-?) An honest businessman seeking a loan to build a factory for his community. He speaks with an accent from Northern England. May also be cast in ensemble. Queen Victoria (No Vocal/Female/ Age 40-?) A statue in the park. May also be cast in ensemble. Miss Smythe (No Vocal/Female/ Age 40-?) The Bank Chairman s humorless secretary. May also be cast in ensemble. Based on the beloved timeless film, this heartwarming musical adaptation features seventeen Irving Berlin songs and a book by David Ives and Paul Blake. Veterans Bob Wallace and Phil Davis have a successful song-and-dance act after World War ll. With romance in mind, the two follow a duo of beautiful singing sisters en route to their Christmas show at a Vermont lodge, which happens to be owned by Bob and Phil s former army commander. The dazzling score features well known standards including Blue Skies, I Love a Piano, How Deep is the Ocean, and the perennial favorite, White Christmas. Adult auditionees should prepare a 2 minute maximum vocal piece that will highlight their singing ability and be prepared to read a small amount of dialogue that shows character development. The directing staff will be casting adult and 2-5 children roles. Auditionees for White Christmas, including dance chorus, must take part in either the Movement or Dance portion of auditions. As this show includes some tap dancing, we ask all required Dance auditionees participate in the tap audition during dance auditions. 43
