How does an institution acquire, preserve, and display time-based work? As The Ringling delves deeper into its commitment to contemporary art, we are exploring how best to collect performance. By inviting artist Jill Sigman back to Sarasota to share recollections of her project Hut #10, we will be documenting an experience that was meaningful to so many in the museum community. 5 PROGRAMS CONVERSATIONS CHAO LECTURE HALL $5 / Free for Members / Included with Admission Limited seating, ticket required TUES JAN 22, 10:30 AM CONVERSATION WITH THE LIBRARY From the Ancient Pyramids to a Voyage through Italy: The Ringling Art Library s Collection of Rare Travel Books Beginning with Pauanias second-century personal journal of his description of Greece, and continuing today with blogs and guide books, travel literature has been a popular genre through many centuries. The Ringling Art Library s Special Collection includes a number of seventeenth to nineteenth-century travel books, many of which are extremely rare. This presentation will explore these fascinating journeys and the authors who wrote about them. Join Coco Fusco and visiting Cuban artists for a day of programs exploring the role of the arts in Cuba. The day begins with a film screening of Nadie, followed by a panel discussion about poetry in Cuba. All attendees are invited to a reception immediately following the panel discussion for a chance to meet the artists. Tickets are required but are free thanks to the generosity of the Gus Lobenwein Memorial Fund and the Walter Haskins Fund in memory of Stacey K. Haskins of the Community Foundation of Sarasota County. ART AND A MOVIE CHAO LECTURE HALL Free program, registration is required SAT, JAN 12, 1:00 PM NADIE WITH DIRECTOR MIGUEL COYULA Join us for a film screening of Nadie, directed by Cuban filmmaker Miguel Coyula. Coyula will be there to introduce the film and take questions from the audience. Nadie (Nobody) tells the story of Rafael Alcides. Rafael Alcides was once a widely known and celebrated writer of the Cuban revolution who grew increasingly disillusioned. Coyula has created a pop culture collage combining clips from old movies, photographs, and imaginary conversations all held together by the magnetic personality of Alcides. VIEWPOINT LECTURE SAT, JAN 5, 1:00 PM COCO FUSCO: TWILIGHT MEET-UP Free program, limited seating, ticket required. The Ringling invites you to participate in conversations about Coco Fusco: Twilight at these informal meet-ups. We will meet on the grounds at the Tin Man of the Twenty-First Century sculpture, then move inside the museum to discuss the exhibition. Participants are encouraged to view Fusco s video work on display in the Monda Gallery prior to attending this program. CHAO LECTURE HALL Free program, registration is required SAT, JAN 12, 3:30 PM ARTIST TALK: POETRY IN CONTEMPORARY CUBA This Artist Talk is a unique opportunity to hear from Cuban artists as they discuss poetry and the social role of artists in twenty-first century Cuban society. Coco Fusco will moderate a discussion with filmmaker Miguel Coyula, actress Lynn Cruz and poet Amaury Pacheco. Cruz and Pacheco are both featured in Fusco s newest video work Vivir en junio con la lengua afuera. Each week, we will set up interactive stations throughout one of the museum s venues. Families are free to move through these stations at their own pace to enjoy, play, and learn together as a family. Each ticket will admit one child and up to two adults. All participants must check in at the Children s Welcome Center, where you will be given a map explaining the day s activities. Tickets include Museum Admission for the day.
