Its first version, in 1835, was a London play called A Day Well Spent by John Oxenford. Seven years later Einen Jux will er sich machen (He Intends To Have a Fling), a Viennese variation by Johann Nestroy, was produced. In 1938, Thornton Wilder turned the Nestroy play into The Merchant of Yonkers and 17 years after that he rewrote it as The Matchmaker. Both versions of Wilder s plays had Broadway runs. The version of HELLO, DOLLY! we know today opened at the St. James Theatre, New York City on January 16th, 1964 with Carol Channing in the title role. (The role of Dolly was first offered to Ethel Merman, but she was still recovering from her long run in Gypsy, and declined.) It became Channing s most memorable role and she will forever be considered Dolly. However, the road to Broadway success was long and not easy. The pre-broadway tour was extremely difficult and hopes were not high for a success. Producer David Merrick made the try-outs a nightmare for director & choreographer Gower Champion, Channing and the entire creative team, threatening to replace almost every one of them at one point or another. Initial road reviews were mixed, but the New York opening was a glittering success. The showplayed for 2844 performances - at the time, the longest playing Broadway musical in history.the London production played for 794 performances at the Drury Lane Theatre. Almost every popular leading actress of the time played Dolly. Channing's Broadway replacements included Ginger Rogers, Betty Grable, Martha Raye and Phyllis Diller. An allblack cast headed by Pearl Bailey and Cab Calloway revitalized the show for hundreds of additional performances. At one point, Merrick claimed he wanted Jack Benny as a drag Dolly with George Burns as Horace, a bizarre yet tantalizing possibility that never got beyond the discussion stage. Mary Martin took the show to London (794 performances at the Drury Lane Theater), followed by a tour of the Far East. Ethel Merman was the original production's last Dolly, making her final Broadway appearances in a role that had been conceived for her. But Channing was the one who became forever identified with Dolly, performing the role more than 4,000 times over the years. The show has been revived several times on Broadway, most recently in 1995 for 116 performances at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, again with Carol Channing as Dolly Levi. From a U.S. Army Entertainment historical aspect, we are very pleased and honored to use unique Hello, Dolly! backdrops in the Roadside production. These were designed and painted by Jim Martin in 1977 for a production at the Hanau Entertainment Branch. In consideration of others. Unauthorized videotaping or photographs of any kind are not allowed. Please turn off all handy cell phones, pagers and beepers. If they are required for an official duty, please turn them into the theater staff who will contact you for a business related call. Be aware, additional emergency exits are located on either side of the stage behind the black curtains.
