These revisions are focused on a shift to core coursework and a formal inclusion of a proseminar course. The proposal was approved by ASCC on 19 October 2018 and received by the Graduate School on 22 October It was reviewed by the combined GS/CAA Curriculum subcommittee, chaired by Faculty Fellow Jennifer Schlueter, on 13 November 2018 and moved forward to the Graduate Council that same day. It was reviewed and unanimously approved by that body on 29 November 2018.

5 RATIONALEFORPROPOSEDCHANGETOMAandPHDPROGRAMSinTHEATRE Inreflectingonthecurrentstateofthefield,therequirementsofourpeerinstitutions,ourfaculty s experienceofteachingwithinourcurrentcurriculumsincethemovetosemesters,andrecurrent queriesfromourgraduatestudentsaboutourcurriculum,theperformance/history/theoryareaofthe DepartmentofTheatreisrecommendingkeychangestothecorecurriculumofourMAandPhD curricula.thesewerediscussedacrosstheacademicyearinresponsetoassessmentinformationand feedbackfromournationalassociationofschoolsoftheatre(nast)accreditingbody,andwere unanimouslyapprovedinmarch2018. Ourrecommendedshiftsinclude: 1.) Amovementawayfromacorecurriculumboundbychronologyandfocusedoninculcatinga completesweepforourstudentsandtowardsacurriculumthatleansintomethodologyasits organizingprinciple.themethodologieswehavepinpointed historiography,performance studies,andpracticeasresearch aretheonesdrivingscholarshipinourfieldrightnow. 2.) Formalizingofcommitmenttoandsharedresponsibilityforregularcolloquia(inour8995 Proseminarcourse)inwhichstudentssharedevelopingdraftsoftheses,dissertations, conferencepapers,publications,andpractice`orientedwork. 3.) InclusionofacourseonpedagogywithinthePhDprogram,aswellasarequirementthatoneof thecomprehensiveexamareasfocusesonthistopic. 4.) Adjustingthemajorityofourcorecoursecredithoursfrom4to3toimprovetheabilityof studentsoutsideofourdepartmenttoenrollinourcourseandtomakeitmorepossibleforour studentstoenrollincoursesoutsideofourdepartment. TRANSITIONPLAN Forstudentswhoenteredourprogramunderaprevioushandbook,wewillautomaticallysubstitute newrequiredcoursesforcurrentrequiredcoursesuptothenecessarycreditsinthatcategory(16for MAstudentsand20forPhDstudents).Allothercoursesandrequirementswillbecontinuedasunder theprevioushandbook. Coursesthatwerepartofthecurrentcorewillberetainedanddeployedaselectivesonanas`needed basis.
