Each session will include the screening of a documentary or a feature and a short, time permitting. Reviewers are asked to complete a rating form and to join a post film discussion. Festival Program Director Joe Bilancio will facilitate the reviews so you are sure to enjoy stimulating discussions about what factors determine if a film is festival appropriate. Please remember that screener copies of films are provided as a courtesy for the specific purpose of reviewing for consideration as a festival entry. These copies may be of lesser technical quality and are not designed to be projected on the big Location: South Coastal Library, Bethany Beach screen. Despite these circumstances, review sessions are a great way to see a broad scope of films from emerging directors. Please understand that film titles and descriptions will not be provided in advance. Why, you may ask? We want everyone to arrive with an open mind for a new experience. Thank you in advance for your participation. Co-sponsored with the Rehoboth Beach Public Library. The Fighter (1952) Wed, April 9 at 4:00 pm This drama is based on The Mexican by Jack London, who wrote the story during the Mexican Revolution while living in El Paso. The piece, based on a real life character, was originally published in 1911 in the Saturday Evening Post. The film version, released in 1952, stars Richard Conte (well-known for his role in The Godfather, 1972) as Filipe, who travels north from his home in Mexico to seek vengeance for wrongs committed in his village by soldiers of a corrupt government. The tale unfolds on two fronts, in Mexico where Durango (played by Lee J. Cobb) leads revolutionaries in constant need of arms, and in El Paso, Texas, where Filipe is motivated to enter the boxing ring in hopes of winning cash purses that will finance the weapons needed to help the overthrow of President Diaz s regime. A review in the New York Times when the film was released stated,... the inevitable climax... adds up to one of the most graphically exciting screen bouts in years,... of which Mr. London would have been proud. Directed by Herbert Kline. Also featuring Vanessa Brown, Frank Silvera, Roberta Haynes, and Hugh Sanders. [1952, USA, Runtime: 78 min, black and white] The Man Who Could Work Miracles Wed, May 14 at 4:00 pm Based on the H.G. Wells short story of the same name, this British fantasy/comedy explores the wide range of actions taken by a man granted the ability to perform miracles. The short story was originally published in 1898 in The Illustrated London News. In the film adaptation, Roland Young stars as George Fotheringay, who has been given miraculous powers, and the story follows him through the discovery of his new abilities, his initial carefree exercise of them, and to his awakening desire to change the world for the better. H.G. Wells, who also co-wrote the screenplay, mixes humor, illusion, and a message in this charming allegory of the ability of humans to direct the future. Roland Young, a popular British actor in the 1930s, is well-known for playing the title role in the Topper films of the period, for which he earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Ralph Richardson, another famous British stage and screen actor, is featured as the recipient of several miracles gone wrong. In a New York Times review from 1937, Frank Nugent wrote, The Man Who Could Work Miracles is a delightfully humorous fantasy with an undertone of sober Wellsian philosophy. [1937; UK; Runtime: 82 mins.; black and white] 2 Reel News Apr Aug

5 Monthly Screenings Enjoy films and audience discussions about culture, diversity, and issues of interest nationally and around the world. Ocean View: The Den at Bear Trap Dunes 7 Clubhouse Drive, Ocean View, DE Rehoboth: Upstairs Screening Room, Movies at Midway Admission: $4 RBFS member (current card must be presented) $6 future members Special Ocean View Discount Attendees of the Ocean View screenings at The Den get 10% off regular dinner entrees on the evening of the screening. The Den begins serving dinner at 4:30 pm; reservations and early arrivals for dinner are encouraged. The Other Son Ocean View: Thur, April 24 at 7:00 pm Rehoboth: Fri, April 25 at 7:00 pm This compelling and compassionate family drama tells the story of two young men accidentally switched at birth one is Israeli and one is Palestinian. The truth comes to light when Joseph, raised in comfort as the son of an Israeli officer, submits a routine blood sample in order to join the military. Yassin has grown up with an equally loving Arab family. As the households struggle to deal with the impossibility of their situation, a fresh viewpoint of the continuing Middle East conflict emerges, along with the eternal question of nature versus nurture. Is the person you become in life more a product of your DNA or your upbringing? Can one or the other ever be denied? In this case, gradual acceptance and finding common ground allow the two fathers and mothers to bridge the chasm of spiritual, ethnic, and social animosity that threatens to separate them from the sons they love and must now share. And how will the sons themselves deal with this potentially life-changing discovery? NY Times reviewer A.O. Scott writes, The film is propelled by a hopeful, good-hearted humanism, and it sets out to show that, in spite of political, religious and cultural divisions, people are people. Directed by Lorraine Lévy who won Best Director at the Tokyo International Film Festival in Cast includes Jules Sitruk (Joseph), Mehdi Dehbi (Yassin), Pascal Elbé, Emmanuelle Devos, Areen Omari and Khalifa Natour. [2012, France, Runtime: 105 min, Rated: PG-13, In French, English, Arabic, and Hebrew with subtitles] The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life and Cavedigger Rehoboth: Fri, May 23 at 7:00 pm See two moving, Academy-Awardnominated documentaries: The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life is an Oscar -winning film that tells the uplifting, inspirational story of 109-year-old Alice Herz-Sommer, a renowned concert pianist who used music to survive the Holocaust. Born in Prague, her life journey began amidst a cultured family. Alice enjoyed a successful concert career performing throughout central Europe. The occupation of Czechoslovakia changed her life drastically as she and members of her family were transported to different concentration camps. Alice was determined to not just survive, but also to protect her son from the emotional and physical realities of life at the mercy of Nazis. This film follows the journey of how she used music throughout her life to stay positive and to see beauty in the long life she lived. [2013, UK, Runtime: 39 mins.] Cavedigger takes a fascinating look at artist sculptor Ra Paulette and his massive, hand-carved caves which he creates in the sandstone cliffs of Northern New Mexico. Each creation is a multi-year project and the process embodies his struggles to maintain artistic integrity as he deals with the monetary reality of patron commissions. The sandstone caves he creates include magnificent natural imagery as well as striking abstract designs. Paulette s passion for his work is demonstrated in his resolve to create a monumental, 10-year project over which he maintains complete control. Directed by Jeffrey Karoff, the film was nominated for the Best Documentary Short Subject Oscar. [2013, US, Runtime: 39 mins.] Apr Aug 2014 Reel News 5

Thank you to Scott Strickler, Laura Dotterer & Monica Viana for preparing the January 2014 Newsletter for mailing. RBFS recognized The Rehoboth Beach Film Society has been recognized by the Standards for Excellence Institute as having met all the requirements for the Standards for Excellence Tier One: Essentials-Adherence to Basic Legal, Regulatory, and Governance Practices. This means the Film Society is committed to upholding basic principles and practices of strong nonprofit management and governance. In March, an application was submitted for Tier 2: Enhancing the Essentials of Nonprofit Governance and Management and for Tier 3: Certified in the Standards for Excellence Program. The Film Society s second application is currently being reviewed. The application process requires many samples of the organization s policies, procedures, governing documents, financial reports, and programming evaluation materials. In addition, explanations and summaries are submitted to give the review panel a comprehensive view of how the organization operates. The enormous process of preparing the applications was led by Julie Davis (Chair of the Governance Committee) and her husband John Metz. Their leadership and countless hours of work made participation in this program possible. RBFS Board members were involved in the review process, with Darrel Grinstead (President) personally reviewing almost every document. The Rehoboth Beach Film Society is proud to report that it is the first arts organization in the State of Delaware and the first non-profit organization in Sussex County to achieve this recognition. Stay tuned for the results of the second application. 6 Reel News Apr Aug
