4 Around the World Experience critically acclaimed, award-winning international independent films. This series is co-sponsored with the Lewes Public Library and Movies at Midway. Location: Upstairs Screening Room, Movies at Midway Admission: Free In the Name Of Wed, Sept 3 at 6:30 pm Adam is a Catholic priest who discovered his calling as a servant of God at the relatively late age of 21. He now lives in a village in rural Poland where he works with troubled teens. He declines the advances of a young woman, saying he is already spoken for, however celibacy is not the only reason for his rejection. Adam knows that he desires men and that his embrace of the priesthood has been a flight from his own sexuality. When he meets Lukasz, the strange and aloof son of a simple rural family, Adam s self-imposed abstinence becomes a heavy burden. Kevin Langson of The Edge San Francisco, states This is emphatically not a typical melodrama... and thank God for that! [2013, Poland, Runtime: 102 min, Not Rated, Polish with English subtitles] 2 Autumns, 3 Winters Wed, Oct 1 at 6:30 pm Autumns, 3 Winters is a French 2 romantic-comedy that depicts the lives and loves of a group of Parisians. As fate brings them together, Arman s best friend Benjamin suffers an unexpected stroke, relegating him to the hospital where he falls for his young physical therapist. Over the course of two autumns and three winters, Arman, Amélie, and Benjamin share the minor moments, unexpected accidents, and unforgettable memories that define who they become. Film critic Peter Sobczynski of rogerebert.com states, This is a film with wit, style and even a couple of moments of real emotional power that deserves to be seen. Betbeder s screenplay has moments of great wit and charm. Craig Williams, Cinevue says, 2 Autumns, 3 Winters, is the palpable love of cinema on display! The Woman in Green Wed, Sept 10 at 4:00 pm The Woman in Green is the 11th Sherlock Holmes film that Basil Rathbone (Holmes) and Nigel Bruce (Dr. Watson) made together. Based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle s The Adventure of the Empty House, the film finds Holmes and Watson trying to solve the case of the Finger Murders. When four women are found slain with their forefingers severed, Scotland Yard calls on the alwaysclever Holmes for help. The trail leads the detective to a beautiful hypnotist, in league with an old nemesis. The movie comes to a nerve-racking conclusion as a hypnotized Holmes roams along the edge of a penthouse! [1945, US, Runtime: 68 min, Rated G] Minority Report Wed, Oct 8 at 4:00 pm Directed by Steven Spielberg, this science fiction-whodunit stars Tom Cruise as John Anderton, a detective in the year 2054 where a specialized police department arrests criminals before they actually commit a crime. They do this based on the visions of three psychics who drift in a flotation tank, their brain waves tapped by computers, and whose prophecies are never wrong. When Anderton realizes he s been identified as the future killer of someone he s never met, the hunter becomes the hunted as he tries to determine the identity of the victim-to-be. Minority Report, based on the short story of the same name by Philip K. Dick, received an Academy Award nomination for Best Sound Editing and 11 Saturn Award nominations. Roger ebert.com says This film is such a virtuoso high-wire act, daring so much, achieving it with such grace and skill. Minority Report reminds us why we go to the movies in the first place. [2002, US, Runtime: 140 min, Rated PG 13] Away From Her Wed, Dec 10 at 4:00 pm A way From Her is based on Alice Munro s 1999 short story, The Bear Came Over the Mountain. Fiona and Grant (Julie Christie and Gordon Pinsent) have been married for almost 50 years, most of them happy ones. Their easy retirement is shattered by Fiona s Alzheimer s diagnosis and when she becomes a risk to herself, she transitions into a nearby nursing home. Now Grant must not only cope with his loneliness but the fact that Fiona no longer remembers him. This film debuted at the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival and also played in the Premier category at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival. Says New York Times film critic A.O. Scott, I can t remember the last time the movies yielded up a love story so painful, so tender and so true. [2006, Canada, Runtime: 110 min, Rated PG-13] 8 Reel News Sep Dec
