4 Theatre & Dance Wed 31 Jan 7.30pm In association with Gulbenkian and Puppet Animation Scotland, and their manipulate Visual Theatre Festival Cie Akselere (France) present Sleeping Beauty The Claim Mon 29 Jan 7.30pm The Claim by Tim Cowbury directed by Mark Maughan A comically absurd and quietly shattering journey to the heart of our tolerant and fair society. Serge stands before us. He has a performance to give. But why is he here? What is he claiming has happened to him? And what has Willy Wonka got to do with it? The Claim gently invites you into the most British of interviews, then morphs into a dizzying onslaught of bureaucracy and prejudice. A bold, imaginative response to the stories of those seeking refuge in the UK, this play asks what happens when your life is at stake and all you have to save it are your words. An accessible, hilarious and nuanced piece Professor Alison Phipps, UNESCO T: Full / GulbCard / Student & Under 25s 8.80 / Season offer 8.50 / Schools 7.80 Suitable for ages 14+ Runtime: 75mins ShowTalk: Followed by post-show discussion. A personal interpretation of the darker elements of the Briar Rose fairy tale, a fairy tale for grownups, created and performed by Compagnie Akselere s Artistic Director, Colette Garrigan. The kingdom of Liverpool, Garrigan s home town, is devastated by unemployment and famine. It s safer to be a gang member than to be alone and needles have replaced spindles. Not the best place for dreams about modern-day princesses, and very far away from the nearest, happily-everafter fairy-tale castle. Creating a unique and threatening realm of shadows with puppetry, everyday objects and imaginative lighting, Garrigan integrates her Liverpool voice with her adopted French tongue to describe a dangerous world where the blackest of humour co-exists with poetic stillness and insights. Born in Liverpool, Colette Garrigan studied puppetry in France, at the International Puppetry Centre in Charleville-Mézières, before settling on the island of Réunion where she founded Compagnie Akselere in Now based in Normandy, Colette has created seven successful productions and become an important and distinctive theatrical voice in France.
