From the Director s Desk One of the best things we do at the Doña Ana Arts Council is Career Art Path, a two week long immersion program in the visual arts for middle school students that includes hands on experience in many fields such as ceramics, painting, batik and photography. The program, known as CAP for short, also includes field trips to local galleries, museums and businesses to discover the many career avenues available in the arts. For the past 20 years, this program has inspired so many young people to explore a viable career path in the arts. We would like to thank Marian and Jordon Wolle and The Mesilla Valley Weavers for their financial support of CAP. This year s program will run from June 15-26, with a culminating student art show on Friday, June 26 from 12 noon to 1pm at Alma d arte Charter High School, 401 Court Ave. The public is invited to come see our future artists-in-the making! Best regards, Kathleen Albers, Executive Director Marian and Jordon Wolle, founders of the Career Art Path program, at last year s student art show. Doña Ana Arts Council s Volunteer of the Month ~ EMMITT BOOHER Emmitt Booher lives in Mesilla with his wife of forty years, Rosa, and three rescue pets, L. Diego, Frida K, and Socrates. Emmitt is a native New Mexican and moved to the Mesilla Valley in His fascination with photography began with his Grandmother s Kodak box camera fifty years ago. This passion turned into a lifelong study of the photographic medium. It has led Emmitt to pursue studies in Vermont, California, Montana, Texas, New Mexico and Italy with photographers whose work he admires. He is a member of the Doña Ana Photography Club, Hawk s Aloft, Friends of Bosque del Apache, Doña Ana Arts Council, Southwest Environmental Center and the Yellowstone Association. Emmitt has contributed wonderful photographs from the Renaissance ArtsFaire and Las Cruces Arts Fair as well as many events at the Rio Grande Theatre. 4 Spotlight on the Rio Grande Theatre Doña Ana Arts Council Announces Career Art Path June 15-26, 2015 The Doña Ana Arts Council proudly presents its annual Career Arts Path (CAP) program for middle school students interested in exploring career fields within the arts. Designed for students entering the 5th through 8th grades, CAP is a two-week immersion program in the visual arts, exposing attendees to different artistic callings, via handson learning experiences, field trips and exhibits of their work. The CAP program will be held June 15-26, 2015 at Alma d Arte Charter High School, 402 W. Court Ave, Las Cruces. Career Art Path provides an opportunity for middle school students to explore a wide range of various aspects of art in depth, including ceramics, drawing, and painting. They are able to experiment with many new media often presented to them by artists that are working in that field. With several field trips, the students are able to see many kinds of careers in art from costume design to the culinary arts as well as auxiliary careers in art, such as working as a curator in a museum and the business of running a gallery. A parent from last year s program credited CAP with showing her daughter there is nothing she can t do, and no one she can t be. 4 CAP culminates with an art show featuring the students artwork, which this summer will be in the El Paso Electric Gallery in the Rio Grande Theatre. One former CAP student recently wrote to say, In May I will be graduation from NMSU with my Bachelor s Degree in art and a lot of this is due to my experiences at CAP. Career Art Path will be held on June 15-26, Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM- 2:00 PM at the Alma d Arte Charter High School, 402 W Court Ave, Las Cruces, NM. Tuition is $100 per student for the two-week program. 6 Spotlight on the Rio Grande Theatre Doña Ana Arts Council Announces Registration for 2015 Summer Opera Camp at Rio Grande Theatre Shown here: Opera Storyteller students rehearse the new opera that they helped write and produce. 6 The Doña Ana Arts Council will roll out its newest arts education program this summer, when Opera Storytellers Camp makes its debut, co-sponsored by the Santa Fe Opera (SFO). Lead by SFO faculty experts including a composer, a stage director, a vocal coach, and a costume, scenic and video designer Opera Storytellers Camp will allow attendees to activate their voices, bodies and imaginations, to expand their individual potential through creative exploration and discovery. Opera Storytellers Camp will run July 20-25, 2015 and will be presented at the Rio Grande Theatre. The Santa Fe Opera is excited to announce the launch of Opera Storytellers, a summer camp for kids around New Mexico, said Rebecca Holmes, Director of Story Development for the Santa Fe Opera and Co-Manager of Active Learning Through Opera (ALTO). While the summer camps are a first for The Santa Fe Opera, its commitment to community engagement and education goes back more than 25 years. Through its ALTO program, SFO Teaching Artists work in partnerships with teachers and school districts around the state to provide professional development for teachers, and arts integrated learning opportunities for students. Designed for students entering 3rd through 8th grades, Opera Storytellers Camp will introduce 25 to 30 students to the elements of opera libretto writing, music composition and theatrical staging then give them the opportunity to compose and present their own musical drama based on the Hero s Journey. The camp will culminate with a performance of the production for family and friends, live on the Rio Grande Theatre stage. Registration is already underway and slots will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Tuition is $100 per student; partial scholarships are available. Opera is the ultimate collaborative art form, said Executive Director for the Doña Ana Arts Council Kathleen Albers. It combines music composition and production, singing, libretto writing, acting, costume design and set building, which requires 2 and 3 dimensional visual art to paint backdrops and build the set and props. We are very excited to introduce this new program by the Santa Fe Opera here in Las Cruces. The Rio Grande Theatre is located at 211 N. Main Street, in Las Cruces, NM, and is managed by the Doña Ana Arts Council for the City of Las Cruces. Offices are located upstairs in the theater and are open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information on the Doña Ana Arts Council s Summer Youth Programs visit or call (575)

7 Spotlight on the Rio Grande Theatre Hometown Legends Nosotros Return to Feed The Body And Soul Saturday, June 20, 2015 The Doña Ana Arts Council and Casa de Peregrinos join forces with hometown musical favorites Nosotros to present a benefit concert and food drive called Feed the Body and Soul. Organized to address a very real need in our community, the event will kick off with a food drive at the downtown Farmers & Crafts Market of Las Cruces on Saturday, June 13 and culminate in a concert at the Rio Grande Theatre on Saturday, June 20 with Nosotros, the local group that has gone on to become one of the hottest Latin acts in the Southwest. Award-winning ensemble, Nosotros, began as a Las Cruces guitar trio in 1994, but has since added members, relocated to Albuquerque and racked up the awards, cementing their reputation as a Latin music powerhouse. Having just celebrated their 20th anniversary as a musical act, Nosotros seamlessly combines Latin rhythms with the elements of Flamenco, Jazz, Salsa and Rock to create an unmistakably original sound. We stand behind Casa de Peregrinos in their efforts to feed the less fortunate in Las Cruces and Doña Ana County, said Nosotros founder Randy Sanchez. It s our honor and privilege to perform at this year s event and we hope to see many donors from the community come out and celebrate with us. We believe, as a group, that every one deserves access to food and it is a necessity and right to feed our people. We also believe that everyone deserves access to art and art education. We would like to thank the Doña Ana Arts Council for their continuing efforts to helping make the arts essential to the City of Las Cruces and Doña Ana County. A refrigerated truck from Casa de Peregrinos will be set up near the Rio Grande Theatre from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 13, during the Farmers & Crafts Market of Las Cruces. Bring your donations fruits, vegetables or other perishable items or buy them at the market and deliver them to the truck, then purchase your tickets for the concert, as well as Nosotros CDs and t-shirts. To further feed both the body and soul, Project MainStreet will organize a food truck roundup and has invited High Desert Brewery to set up outside the Rio Grande Theatre from 6 to 10 p.m. on the night of the concert, Saturday, June 20. All net proceeds from the concert will go to the Casa de Peregrinos emergency food bank and to the Doña Ana Arts Council s arts education programs. The Rio Grande Theatre is located at 211 N. Main Street, in Las Cruces. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the performance begins at 7 p.m. Reserved seats for the benefit concert are $26 and may be purchased via the website at or upstairs at the Rio Grande Theatre box office, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information visit the website or call (575)

Please join us for this wonderful exhibit, meet the artists and get a first hand look at the artistic process. 8 Drawing and sketching has always been part of Jack s background; from being encouraged by his father to illustrate the adventure stories of the day to moonlighting as an illustrator for advertising agencies. A U.S. Air Force veteran (Strategic Air Command), Jack served in Zaragoza, Spain as a Nuclear Weapons Specialist during the early Cold War years. After paying his dues in the sales world for Addressograph- Multigraph Corporation he found his niche by demonstrating the capabilities of the compact printing press, known as the Multilith 1250 by running off copies of his ink sketches of boats at Fisherman s wharf & other scenery around San Francisco. After a long career in corporate sales of printing and graphic arts supplies, Jack struck out on his own in 1988 as a free-lance commercial artist starting Harbor Graphics & Design located in Gig Harbor, WA. Jack and his wife, Sue, sold the business in 1998 to their employees and moved to Las Cruces, NM where he started Jack Pumphrey Arts. Working with customers and prospects on a national level as a printing consultant and fine artist specializing in transportation and architecture, he honed his talents by doing commissions of classic cars, fine yachts and home renderings during the housing boom of the 2000 s. Utilizing his background in the printing industry, he offers consul to his clients with help in creating logos, sales presentations, posters, business cards and brochures. The play is the beautiful story of Shahrazad s wedding night in the palace of King Shahrayar. Like thousands of young brides before her, the new queen is to be put to death by morning. Unlike her misfortunate predecessors, Shahrazad has the one gift that can save her life: the gift of storytelling. Her stories are those we have come to know and love the stories of Ali Baba and Es-Sindibad. With her mischievous imagination, Queen Shahrazad paints a dazzling array of stories and characters. Arabian Nights employs a mixture of song, dance, puppetry and illusion to summon magical, enchanted worlds full of wild beasts, singing trees and sneaky thieves. It is a celebration of imagination and storytelling...but is it be powerful enough to save Shahrazad s life? The play is an ensemble piece in which each actor plays multiple roles. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m. Sundays, June 14 and 21 at 2:30 p.m. and a Thursday evening performance on June 18 at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $12.00 regular admission, $10.00 students and seniors over 65, and all seats on Thursday are $8.00. The daughter of two vagabond musicians, Gabrielle inherited the genetic predisposition to wanderlust and song. Gabrielle Louise s music is anchored deeply in folk, but undeniably drawn to rich harmonies and melodic adventurism. Her ound has the earthy feel of early Joni Mitchell while also veering into the spirited delivery

12 Arts and Entertainment of fellow genre- hopping artist Martin Sexton. Unafraid to take a random musical escapade in the name of inspiration, Gabrielle is at one moment folkie and ethereal, the next moment a smoky jazz chanteuse. She recently released her fifth studio record accompanied by a book of short stories and poems entitled, The Bird in my Chest. Justin Thompson is a songwriter and performer from Albuquerque, New Mexico with an affinity for traditional folk music and the acoustic guitar. His persona and lyrics are as poetic as they are rough around the edges, and both lend themselves to honest and energetic performances. With an instinctive knack for melody and prose, Justin s songs are as singable as they are poignant. Justin recently finished a successful kickstarter campaign to fund the completion of his debut record, Hymns for a Manchild, reaching his goal of over $5,000 over the course of a one month campaign. For this special concert, Justin celebrates the release of his album. Both sets will be accompanied by Albuquerque s virtuoso mulit- instrumentalist, Gregg Daigle on mandolin, guitar, and banjo. In 2013 Gregg was voted Best Musician in Albuquerque by the Local IQ reader s poll and in 2014 was nominated for a NM Music Award. $10 at the door or in advance by calling (575) Acting Class for Children ~ June 8-12 at the Black Box Theatre Annex An Acting Class for Children will be taught at the Black Box Theatre Annex, located at 717A North Mesquite Street in Las Cruces from June Carole Schorr, a Hollywood Talent Manager, teaches acting in a nurturing, fun, and supportive environment helping children build confidence, improve memory and gain discipline. This exhibit will explore his passion for astronomy and the discoveries his dedication brought to fruition. new & ongoing Exhibits & Events 14 Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum, Las Cruces: June 11 ~ Culture Series: Ronald Kil: Spanning the Range , Las Cruces Museum of Art: Through July 25 ~ Annual Regional Biennial , community-and-cultural-services/museum-system Branigan Cultural Center, Las Cruces: June 5-27 ~ Terraria Gigantica June 5-25 ~ Beyond Pluto: The Clyde Tombaugh Story , community-and-cultural-services/museum-system Railroad Museum, Las Cruces: , community-and-cultural-services/museum-system Las Cruces Museum of Nature & Science: , community-and-cultural-services/museum-system Opening June 5 at the Branigan Terraria Gigantica Terraria Gigantica: the World Under Glass includes images from the world s largest enclosed landscapes. In these vivaria plants are grown amidst carefully constructed representations of the natural world to entertain visiting tourists and support scientific observation and research. These architectural and engineering marvels stand as working symbols of our current and complex relationship with the natural world. While the technical and aesthetic demands of these varying missions informed the physical design of these spaces, the required juxtapositions of natural and artificial elements also generate unintentionally striking visual paradoxes. I look in the corners of the carefully constructed exhibits, away from the crowds of visitors, for the places where the illusion gives way. In these margins, these liminal spaces, the natural and the artificial sometimes meet, overlap, and bleed together, or they collide, resist, and contrast with one another. The visual richness of these small details leads to big questions about what it means to create and contain landscapes. Under the glass, I frame these views and invite contemplation of nature s future.

The Railyard is a Cohesive Urban Art Environment, designed and intended as a work of art in itself. Artists, organizations and collaborative, creative teams are encouraged to propose projects, particularly those that respond to the landscape of the Railyard Park + Plaza and that emphasize community engagement and participation. Collaborations across disciplines of artists, scientists, historians, sociologists, etc. are especially encouraged, and various art forms from visual to performing arts are welcome. Projects will be temporary in nature and must be able to be installed and removed from the Railyard within a six month period. The Railyard Arts Committee is under the auspices of The Railyard Stewards, a local organization working in partnership with the City of Santa Fe in a unique care, conservation and education effort to encourage residents to actively participate in the Railyard Park + Plaza.
