2 Shootout on the Snye Registration is Now Open Hockey lovers in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo have the chance to be a part of history. Registration is now open for the 10th annual Shootout on the Snye. This four-on-four pond hockey tournament welcomes teams in all divisions starting at age 5. Teams of four to six players can register for $40 per player until Feb. 13, when registration closes. Ice hockey has been played on the region s frozen waterways dating back to the 1930s. The puck drops on Friday, Feb. 24 and will continue all weekend as an integral part of WinterPLAY. KidSport is a national not-for-profit organization that provides financial assistance for registration fees to kids aged 18 and under. Through a confidential application process, grants are available so they can play a season of sport. 4 Where: Snye Point Park The WinterPLAY Festival is an annual celebration in Wood Buffalo with 2017 marking the 10th Anniversary of the Shootout on the Snye. The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is committed to providing programs and events that celebrate and embrace the magic of winter. Ice sculptures, fireworks, and local entertainment, Sno-Cricket are some of the features at WinterPLAY. Features specific to Sno-Cricket include heated dugouts for players, a custom built cricket pitch, a groomed Sno-field, and flood lights! Get ready for some faced paced excitement with day night games (another first in the World) of 8 a side cricket as teams adopt cricket playing nation identities and embrace what nature has to offer! Bubble Guppies Live! 55-City Canadian Tour Visits Fort McMurray for Two Shows on February 28 Koba Entertainment and Nickelodeon are proud to bring the live theatrical production of Bubble Guppies Live! 5 For more information or to purchase tickets, visit The Hub Family Resource Centre The Hub offers drop-in play Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 4:00 in both locations as well as Saturdays from 10:00 to 4:00 at the downtown location for children ages 0 to 6 and their parents/caregivers. Ask about our early learning programs, parenting programs, developmental screenings and car seat inspections in centre. Are you interested in learning ways to manage toddler tantrums, bedtime routines, and misbehaviour? Triple P is an internationally-recognised Parenting Program that gives parents the skills they need to build strong family relationships, manage misbehaviour, and prevent problems from happening in the first place. 6 2017 Canadian Parks Conference When: March 8-11, 2017 (Call for Presentations Submit now) Where: The Banff Centre, Banff, Alberta Call for Presentations To kick off the planning for the 2017 Canadian Parks Conference, we have launched a Call for Presentations to invite submissions for the conference. The conference theme builds upon the energy and discussions of the 2016 Canadian Parks Summit. The Parks for All - A Shared Vision for Canada's Parks Community will act as the guiding document in the development of the education program for the conference. Sessions will be focused on professional development, networking and storytelling aligned with the strategic directions and priorities outlined within Parks for All. 7 The 2017 Wood Buffalo Artist in Residency program is seeking a professional Canadian artist to manage a 10 week mentoring program. The program begins June 1st and will end on August 24, The selected artist mentor will receive $11,000 CAD (plus GST) in compensation. A modest budget for supplies will also be awarded to support mentoring initiatives and community workshops. Visit for more information.
8 WinterPLAY 2017 Talent Show When: Saturday February 25 and Sunday, February 26 Do you sing, dance, juggle or play a musical instrument? The WinterPLAY Talent Show is your chance to take centre stage and win of three prizes from Peter Pond Mall! To register your act for a chance to win, go to rmwb.ca/winterplay. WinterREELS 48 Hour Film Challenge When: Film Challenge Kick-Off: Friday, February 17 at 8pm Screening: Saturday, February 28 from 7pm to 10pm Where: McMurray Experience, 9909 Franklin Avenue The Fort McMurray Filmmakers Association is happy to partner with the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo for WinterREELS 2017 as a part of WinterPLAY. Each year, local filmmaking teams of all levels are invited to participate in the annual 48-hour film challenge where they will be challenged to make a short film using three random elements for a chance to win a cash prize! These films will be screened the following weekend along with the Hollywood feature film that inspired the elements. Valentine s Latin Dance Party & Romantic Dance Lesson When: Saturday, February 11 at 8:30pm Where: Golden Years Society, Main Street Latin Dance Fort McMurray presents Valentines Latin Dance Party Couples Special. Come learn a romantic bachata choreography with your valentine or a good friend! The lesson takes place from 8:30 pm-10 pm. 17 For more information, contact Snowed in Comedy Tour When: February 23, 2017 from 8pm to10:30pm Where: Keyano Theatre, 8115 Franklin Avenue Cost: $35 The Snowed In Comedy Tour has turned in to a Canadian success story. In a market still dominated by American acts with American TV credits a small Canadian comedy tour has managed to succeed. Like the Tragically Hip they have done it by touring and making more and more people laugh year after year. The 2016 tour received numerous Standing Ovations and was the most successful to date. It has now grown to become one of the largest comedy tours in Canada. Four international comedians come together to create one amazing show with each bringing a unique and hilarious take providing something for everyone. The tour is now making it s second trip through Alberta and Saskatchewan. The location is a significant and highly visible public art installation opportunity for visual artists including, but not limited to, print makers, painters, ceramicists, photographers, and graphic artists who can translate their work into permanent art glass that meets specifications of the shelters.
