The company produces works that delight, excite, engage and inspire. Based in Cape Town, South Africa, Darkroom Contemporary was founded in 2010 by Louise Coetzer and Oscar O Ryan, with the aim to develop work opportunities for the multitude of talented dancers produced by local training institutions. Coetzer, a dancer and choreographer, and O Ryan, a photographer and filmmaker, bring together expertise from their respective fields to form a dynamic partnership. Darkroom Contemporary is recognised for delivering innovative, unexpected works of the highest artistic standard, simultaneously creating unique audience experiences and new ways of appreciating dance. The company regularly stages works in unexpected performance areas, transforming ordinary spaces into intriguing, multi-faceted arenas. Darkroom Contemporary s dance film works sits alongside its performance projects, making the work accessible to a larger global audience through the medium of film and digital media. Projects spearheaded by the founders provide platforms and creates opportunities for skills development and exchange among all artists involved. Project collaborators include dancers, physical performers, visual artists, sound designers, photographers, filmmakers and digital artists. Darkroom Contemporary has implemented a wide range of performance, film, developmental and educational projects in the Western Cape and Gauteng. Creating unique audience experiences through interactive performance works. Developing a new generation of audience support for the art of dance.

4 CHAIRPERSON S REPORT by Klaus Warschkow It feels somewhat disjoined and disconnected to report about the time period from March 2015 to February 2016 after just having witnessed a much more exciting time for Darkroom Contemporary, especially in the second half of But detailed monthly reports provided by Louise Coetzer made the summary for this Chairperson's report rather easy. Darkroom Contemporary performed at the Edge of Wrong Festival on 25 March 2015 in an open space in Woodstock in collaboration with Mark van Niekerk from Without Eyes. This was the only performance within the reported period. It was sadly one of the very few Darkroom performances I missed. Darkroom Contemporary had two of their short dance films screened around the globe during the reported period.the Forgotten was screened at the Indie Karoo Film Festival at the Prins Albert Cinema in July It was also part of the official selection for Agite y Sirva Dance Film Festival in Mexico in August and November And also at the Festival Angelopoltano de Danza in October 2015 also in Mexico.Dead Air was screened as part of the Foreign Exchange Festival in Paris, France in December 2015.While the screenings have not brought any income, it is an achievement to have the films screened and one never knows who is watching. During the reported time period Louise Coetzer spend a great deal teaching at Dance For All, where she heads the Contemporary Dance Programme, and at the Cape Academy of Performing Arts, where she teaches students from both the Accelerated Teaching Programme and the Full Time Pre-Professional Programme. With Dance for All she teaches at one of the main grassroots dance programmes in Cape Town and the Western Cape, which extends to the DFA Bridging Programme to prepare young dancers to continue their professional dance training at CAPA, UCT, Jazzart and others. With CAPA she teaches at one of the most prestigious pre-professional dance teaching institution in the Western Cape, if not South Africa. She also taught at the UCT School of Dance where one of her works for Darkroom Contemporary as selected for a Repertoire Workshop Series for UCT School of Dance 3rd and 4th year students. Having one s work included among the works taught to students is a wonderful achievement and is proof of the recognition of Louise s work with Darkroom Contemporary. Darkroom Contemporary ran a successful crowd funding campaign on Thundafund and raised R of the envisioned R20,000, which allowed for the staging of We the Transposed after this reporting period. The campaign received a final boost after Louise facilitated an open class at Contemporary Dance Classes Cape Town in September Auditions for We the transposed were held in January 2016 and rehearsals started in January and continued in February at Dance for All.
