1 MORITZ MOSZKOWSKI Contents About the Composer About the Music About This Edition Form Sources Consulted (7 9), ose Homann (70 96) (who studied with Moszkowski), ose Lhevinne (7 9), Vladimir Horowitz (90 99), and orge Bolet (9 990) always ound a place or his pieces on their programs SPANISH DANCES, OP (FOR ONE PIANO, FOUR HANDS) No No 0 No 0 No No (Bolero) About the Composer Moritz Moszkowski, amous pianist, teacher, and composer, was born in Breslau, German Silesia, on August,, and died in Paris on March, 9 He studied at the Dresden Conservatory, the Stern Conservatory, and the Kullak Academy in Berlin, where he subsequently taught Following his irst public recital in 7, he continued to perorm throughout Germany and in Paris, where he established a reputation as a pianist and teacher In 97, he made Paris his headquarters Moszkowski was admired or his inished, graceul playing, and or his many audience-pleasing compositions The best o his salon music is o the highest caliber Many Americans went to Europe to study with Moszkowski His philosophy o piano teaching and ingering, like that o Chopin, took into account the physiology o the hand and the topography o the keyboard He had a wonderul git or composing or the hand A delightul melodist, his work can sparkle with humor Virtuosi such as Sergei Rachmanino The Spanish Dances, About the Music Op, are probably Moszkowski s most amous piano works In an interview or the September 9 issue o the magazine The Etude, Moszkowski described how he composed the Spanish Dances when he was 7 years old (in 7) Being short o unds at the time, Moszkowski went to his young riend and composer Philipp Scharwenka (7 97) to borrow some money Philipp, who was broke also, suggested that Moszkowski compose something to sell to a publisher The result was the Spanish Dances Publisher Carl Simon in Berlin accepted the works, which were released some weeks later The dances are listed in the 90 Simon catalog in two volumes: Edition 0 contains the irst three dances (C maor, G minor, and A maor) and Edition contains the remaining two dances (B maor and D maor) These pieces were very popular during Moszkowski s lietime and greatly admired They are brilliant with attractive melodies, and are polished and elegant The pieces are beautiully conceived or the instrument and have a winning appeal They oten sound more diicult than they are and lie well under the hands At the time these works were composed, there was very little Spanish piano music available or even known This helped make these exotic pieces very popular Moszkowski added to the Spanish lavor by naming the ith dance Bolero Simon, Carl Verlags-Katalog von Carl Simon, Musikverlag Berlin 90, p 9
