2 Preace eanne ehrend studied iano ith ose Homann and comosition ith Rosario Scalero during the early days o the Curtis Institute She gave u comosition in the 190s as she elt that oortunities or omen in comosing ere too limiting 1 Instead, she devoted hersel to romoting American music including music by her contemoraries and by comosers o the ast through erormance and research In addition to erorming, she also taught iano at Curtis, The Ne School o Music (Temle University), and uilliard, here she develoed one o the earliest courses on music o the Americas in 19 ehrend s catalogue o comositions consists o ust tentyone ieces, ith Lamentation, or viola and iano, being her inal ork beore she gave u comosing The manuscrit sources indicate that she orked on the comosition rom uly to December 19, and she dedicated it to her cousin Edard L Estein, ho as killed November 10, 19, hile serving in the US Army during World War II The ork as irst erormed on February, 199, at a Comosers Forum concert at Columbia University and as ublished in a Comosers Facsimile Edition (CFE) in 195 A Note on the Sources This edition is based on three sources ound in the eanne ehrend Collection at the Free Library o Philadelhia: Source A: ms score (6 ) (reroduction), dated at the end uly December 19 Source : ms score (6 ) on rerograhic aer or the CFE, bearing a coyright date o 195 Source C: ms viola art ( ) on rerograhic aer or the CFE, bearing a coyright date o 195 Source A includes extensive annotations in encil, many o hich are clearly erormance markings, including ingerings in the viola line (additional markings in Source A, including viola cues, suggest that Source A may also have been used by a violist to read rom in erormance) Source A as reroduced rom Source ; hoever, ehrend made urther changes to Source rior to ublishing the 195 CFE, so Source A reresents an earlier state o the ork Source incororates some o the changes notated in encil in source A, and in several areas o Source the aer has been cut out, removing revious notations that remain in Source A; this includes the removal o the original ourmeasure ending, relaced by a ne ivemeasure ending Source also includes a small number o annotations in encil Source C aears to have been reared or the 195 CFE, as it does not contain the same excised areas that aear in Source and as there is no corresonding viola art ith Source A While ublished coies o the CFE are reerenced in other sources, no ublished coies have been located As Source and Source C reresent the later ublished version o the ork, they serve as the rimary sources or this edition All editorial changes have been made ithout comment The editor is grateul to Linda Wood rom the Free Library o Philadelhia or her assistance in rearing this edition Publication has been made ossible by kind ermission o the estate o eanne ehrend David M ynog, editor
