2 What is Chatterbooks Week? At Explore York Library we had a drop i sessio. Over 20 childre came ad it was brilliat; some brought their most favourite poems ad i the sessio they wrote their ow collaboratively ad there was a lot of humour! All the regular Chatterbooks group atteded ad ew childre too. Rachel Be, Explore York Chatterbooks Week is a celebratio of childre s readig clubs. Libraries ad schools ca use Chatterbooks Week to lauch ew readig clubs for the school year. You ca ru taster sessios or special evets to showcase the fu activities that happe i Chatterbooks. 3 Chatterbooks Impact o childre s readig There has bee a massive icrease i egagemet with books, with cofidece aroud speakig about books ad their arrative, ad a great icrease i comprehesio. Susa Davies, Head of Literacy, Pakema Primary School After takig part i our Chatterbooks programme i 2016, childre read more frequetly, had more positive attitudes towards readig, ad used libraries more. The report ito The Impact of Chatterbooks o Childre s Readig Ejoymet, Behaviours ad Attitudes 1 foud: There was a 22% icrease i the umber of childre readig daily after takig part i Chatterbooks: from 36% to 44% Childre s perceptios of their readig ability improved as well, with 49% feelig that they are very good readers after takig part compared with 41% before 9 i 10 club leaders believe that as a result of the project, childre ejoy readig more ad have become more ethusiastic about readig. 5 Simple sessio outlie Here s a simple sessio outlie, especially for the first few meetigs as everyoe gets to kow each other. 8 Thigs to talk about Favourite books What are people s favourite picture books ad story books? Tell each other about them ad get more ideas for what to read ext! Explorig picture books - visual literacy Get together a collectio of picture books iclude some of your group s favourites, ad see too the book lists i our Illustratios themed book list ad activities. Here are some suggested questios to get everyoe lookig at ad readig the illustratios i the books: What do you otice first? What does the picture tell you? How does it make you feel? Happy? Sad? Excited?... Are there thigs i the picture which make you laugh? How does the picture fit with the words/story? Does the picture add to the story ad tell you more thigs? Is there aythig which surprises or puzzles you? What do you get to kow about the characters from the pictures? ad about the place? ad about souds ad smells?! Look at the use of colours, shapes, patters, textures Look at the way the pages are desiged Make a list of your group s favourite picture books have two colums oe for the books ad oe for why people like them. 9 Loger activities Fidig books you wat to read! Give childre the ru of the library to look for differet kids of books! Get them lookig for a fuy book, a aimal book, or maybe a scary story. Before they go searchig the shelves talk about the clues to look out for e.g. words i the title, particular authors, cover illustratios. Whe everyoe s foud a book, sit dow together ad talk about your choices what attracted people to the book they picked? Do they thik they d like to read it ow? Ecourage them to give it a go! Read out loud People love beig read to ad readig a story or a extract is a great way of itroducig childre to ew books ad geres. Before readig aloud, itroduce the book, set the story i cotext, ad ecourage resposes as you read. Ask questios to help with uderstadig the text. Ecourage discussio ad buildig o each other s ideas. Create a poem shaped as a picture (This works well as a group activity.) Decide o a theme for your poem e.g. a poem about a cat. O a flip chart sheet collect lots of words about cats: what they look like, what they do, how they make you feel e.g. soft fur; purrig; gree eyes; starig; sleepy; hissig; graceful; flexible; washig Put your words together ito possible lies ad phrases for your poem. O a fresh sheet draw a large outlie shape of a cat ad decide together how to shape your phrases to make a poem that fits ito your cat shape. You could repeat words ad lies, ad make your lies curved or go up ad dow to fit ito the shape.
