O average, college studets get less tha six hours of sleep per ight, which ca result i a coditio called sleep depriva- tio. Sleep deprivatio is whe a perso does t get eough sleep. Sleep is associated with everythig i your body it s a metabolic process. Everythig that happes i your body depeds o sleep to happe o a regular basis, Ae Soltysiak, Psychology professor at Siclair, said. She said sleep deprivatio is gettig less sleep tha you eed, ad evetually ca affect your health. You ca have total sleep deprivatio, which is ot sleepig at all, or you ca have chroic partial sleep deprivatio, which meas you do t sleep eough each ight. If you do it ight after ight, that deficit does accumulate to kow health affects, Soltysiak said. Although, sleep deprivatio does ot cause metal disorders to those whom are t predisposed to them, may people ca still be triggered briefly, accordig to Soltysiak. If you re talkig about extreme cases where people go three, four, or five days without ay sleep at all there are some cases where people have brief psychotic episodes, which is completely related to sleep deprivatio. It s called sleep deprivatio psychosis, Soltysiak said. Sarah Fich, Biology professor at Siclair, said stage three ad four of the sleep cycle is the restorative stage. This is the stage where the body is fixig the cells, but it s also the brai essetially defraggig itself. Similar to Fich, Soltysiak said it s a chemical process that occurs at certai stages of sleep, which is ecessary for memory formatio. I the past year, we have lost 2 of our desigers who have had to relocate to other cities where degrees i Fashio Desig are beig offered because colleges i Dayto do ot offer a sigle fashio based curriculum. The closest city to provide a fashio degree is Ciciati, a hour drive from the Dayto area. We have a umber of excitig parterships i the work, but the two that have already bee made public are our parterships with Dayto Regioal STEM Schools ad the Dayto Early College Academy DECA! DE-FI is curretly workig o a Fashio Fusio show that will combie fashio ad techology with the studets from STEM. However, wome seem to get less sleep tha me because it is tied to their hormoal system. Although the youger you are the more sleep you eed i order to have productive brai growth ad memory cosolidatio. If you do t sleep, you do t rehearse those memory circuits, ad if those circuits are t stored, the it s ot there to be retrieved. Fich said we are i a society where we wat a quick fix, but we do t kow the log-term effects of it or the chemicals we are puttig i our body. Soltysiak recommeds studets have good health habits, icludig study habits put aside time every ight to study because that will get you better results rather tha if you cram, accordig to Soltysiak. If you study right before you go to sleep, ad focus o the material ad the go to sleep, the sleep followig the study period will help you actually to cosolidate ad help store that iformatio while you re asleep, Soltysiak said. Both Fich ad Soltysiak have similar views about the coordiatio of the mid ad body. They both agree that it is clear that whe you do t get eough sleep, your brai ad body wo t be workig to their fullest ability. If your physiology is ot where it should be, you wo t get to those restful stages of sleep, Fich said. The biggest thig is to have a healthy lifestyle you have to have sleep, have good utritio, have aerobic exercise, because exercise feeds oxyge ad glucose to your brai, ad if you wat to remember thigs you better feed your brai, Soltysiak said. Also, chroic stress is somethig you have to cope with because if you do t deal with your stress it will disrupt your sleep. Meas is i his secod semester at Siclair ad will graduate i sprig of 2016 with a commuicatio degree. Although he atteded Siclair right out of high school i 2007, his path took a differet route where he eded up i Cato, Ohio goig to school ad workig fulltime. Now that he is back at Siclair, he says he realizes how importat it is to etwork ad surroud himself with positive people. It s ot about what you kow it s about who you kow, Meas said. Takig pride i what he does as a studet ambassador is how Meas fids a feelig of coectio at Siclair. He said his ceter focus is helpig studets. The first few semesters of college is scary ad high school does t prepare you for life at all, so whe you get here, you have to take resposibility for yourself, ad it s hard. So, it s ice to be able to help studets, Meas said. Alog with helpig studets, Meas also atteds off-campus evets, such as high school visits ad college fairs to help promote Siclair. Whe you hear commuity college, you do t thik this is the place I wat to go ad most people thik it s a place where people go who are dow o their luck, but it s ot that way at all, Meas said. A commuity college is for people who maybe ca t afford a four year istitutio, or who are lookig to save moey. It s probably oe of the best commuity colleges i the atio, as far as I m cocered. That was added o to the $1 millio that Siclair had already ivested i the program. Now, a ew partership with UAS simulatios system provider Simlat has give eve more tools for studets. Simlat is plaig to provide studets at the UAS Ceter with a leadigedge resource for simulated f light operatios called the UAS Simulatio Lab. This ew lab, housed i Buildig 13, will feature leadig simulatio systems i a 20-seat classroom broke dow ito five studet statios with oe istructor. The lab will also feature a Simlat IMPACT System, which offers customized scearios, performace assessmets ad traiig research capabilities.
