3 BOSTON UNIVERSITY WIND ENSEMBLE DAVID J. MARTINS, conductor Tuesday, October 17, 2000 PROGRAM Fanfare from "La Peri" Petite Symphonie, Op. 90 Adagio et allegretto Andante cantabile Scherzo Finale Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor (trans. Donald Hunsberger) Paul Dukas ( ) Charles Gounod ( ) Johann Sebastian Bach ( ) -Intermission- Impressions of Japan Joetsu Asahi (Dawn in Joetsu) Todaiji (The Great Buddha at Nara) Asakusa Matsuri (Festival in Asakusa) On a Hymnsong of Lowell Mason Armenian Dances (Part II) (1975) Hov Arek (The Peasant's Plea) Khoomar (Wedding Dance) Lorva Horovel (Songs from Lori) James Barnes David R. Holsinger (b. 1945) Alfred Reed (b. 1921)
4 PROGRAM NOTES Paul Dukas ( ) Fanfare from "La Peri" Paul Dukas studied and later became an acclaimed teacher at the Paris Conservatoire. Best known for his work L'Apprenti Sorcier (The Sorcerer's Apprentice), Dukas destroyed some of his unfinished manuscripts shortly before his death, and much of his music remains unpublished. The Fanfare was originally composed to precede the poeme dance La Peri (The Fairy), and premiered at the Chalet Theatre in Paris, Dukas' orchestration produces powerful sonorities with a relatively small complement of instruments. Charles Gonoud ( ) p,, ite Symphony, Op. 90 Charles Gounod, best known for his opera Faust, also studied at the Paris Conservatoire. A student of theology, Gounod produced a large number of sacred works. He composed the Petite Symphonie,Op. 90 for the Society of Chamber Music for Wind Instruments. The Petite Symphonie premiered with Gounod present in 1885 in the Salle Pleyel in Paris. The work's four movements are evenly balanced and hearken back to Viennese classicism in form and style. Johann Sebastian Bach ( ) Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor Many musicians have been inspired to adapt the music of Johann Sebastian Bach for modem instruments. Composed in Weimar between , the Passacaglia and Fugue in C Minor has inspired an arrangement for orchestra by Respighi, an arrangement for jazz ensemble by Don Sebesky, and a version for wind ensemble by Donald Hunsberger, Professor of conducting and ensembles at Eastman. Bach borrowed the first half of the theme from Andre Raison's Trio en Passacaille; the second half is original. The passacaglia consists of the theme and 20 variations. The fugue utilizes the first half of the theme in 12 statements and accompanies it with a countersubject. Hunsberger's orchestration is dedicated to Frederick Fennell, founder of the Eastman Wind Ensemble. Hunsberger states in the score that each variation, "shall constitute an identifiable coloring," exploring a different aspect of wind instrument t J rities without directly imitating specific organ sounds. \..._
5 James Barnes Impressions of Japan James Barnes, Professor of Music Theory and Composition at the University of Kansas, described Impressions of Japan as, "a tone poem expressing my personal portrayal of what I have seen and experienced during my recent visits to Japan." Commissioned by the Saitama Sakae High School Band of Chmiya, Japan, the work emulates traditional Japanese music through the utilization of unisons for dramatic effect and pentatonic scales. According to the composer, the first movement depicts tiny beams of light from a starry sky, culminating in a colorful sunrise. The second movement is about the world's largest Buddha, and epicts the great influence of Buddhism in Japan. The third movementportrays a celebration at Japan's most famous temple, and features percussion at both the beginning and end, attempting to emulate the intensity and rhythmic drive of festive Japanese folk music. David R. Holsinger (b. 1945) On a Hymnsong of Lowell Mason David R. Holsinger, music minister for 15 years at the Shady Grove Church and Christian Academy in Grand Prairie, Texas, is now a Professor at Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee and conductor of the Lee University Wind Ensemble. Holsinger has arranged many hymn tunes and spiritual songs for wind ensemble. The present work, On a Hymnsong of Lowell Mason, is based on the tune "1832 Olivet" (My Faith Looks Up to Thee). Mason was a musical luminary of 19th century Boston. He was a co-founder of the Boston Academy of Music, president of the Handel and Haydn Society, and a staunch advocate for music in the public schools. Holsinger's arrangement moves the hymn tune from instrument to instrument while using countermelodies and pedal. tones to maintain long lines, and dynamics and dissonance to achieve dramatic tension. Alfred Reed (b. 1921) Armenian Dances (Part II) Alfred Reed is now Professor Emeritus, and was a founder and former department chair of Music Media & Industry at the University of Miami, where he taught for 27 years. The Armenian Dances (Part II) were commissioned by the A.G.B.U. Alex Manoogian Cultural Fund, and dedicated to Dr. Harry Begian. Part II constitutes the final three movements of the entire four-movement work. The material for the Armenian Dances was selected from a collection of folk music compiled by Gomidas Vartabed, ar Armenian clergyman and ethnomusicologist. Program notes by Katherine Meifert
