1 g{x V{tÜÄÉààx XÇV{tÅtwx V{tÜÄÉààx V{tÑàxÜ AMERICAN GUILD OF ORGANISTS YÜÉÅ à{x Wxá~ Éy à{x WxtÇAAA j e ve jumped into a new year with both feet in our chapter. If you missed the delightful evening at the home of Nancy and Bob Watson for our winter social event, you missed a treat. The food was delicious and beautiful, the company was fun and the atmosphere in the Watson home was perfect for an evening of relaxation, fellowship and fun. We offer deep appreciation to Nancy and Bob for opening their home to us for this event. Your Executive Board met on January 14 to take care of our usual business. We were also joined that evening by Loretta Gordon-James from the Greensboro Chapter. Loretta, who many of you may know, hails from Monroe, went to Queens College, and she has been in Greensboro for many years. She has been heavily involved with the Presbyterian Association of Musicians and has been in charge of planning Montreat Music weeks on multiple occasions. More importantly for US, Loretta was the coordinator for the 2011 Regional Covention that took place in Greensboro. Loretta spoke FEBRUARY 2013 Adam Ward, dean to us with candor regarding the experience in Greensboro. She shared with us what worked, what didn't work, the joys and pitfalls in the experience. It was most helpful, and we learned a great deal in our conversation! Within the coming weeks, you should receive information regarding nominations for the coming year. I tell you this so that you simply might be watching your . Our chapter is full of wonderful talent and leaders, and we appreciate those who are willing to step up in service to our organization and to our craft! I hope that if you are not someone that prefers to sit on a board, that maybe you will be willing to step up to be a part of our regional convention leadership. We will need MANY hands to help make this happen. It could be in complex or extremely simple ways. Please be sure to let our Convention Coordinator, Patrick Pope know if you have interest. And if Patrick should call you, say yes! It will make his life a lot easier! Adam Ward The mission of the American Guild of Organists is to enrich lives through organ and choral music. To achieve this, we: Encourage excellence in the performance of organ and choral music; Inspire, educate, and offer certification for organists and choral conductors; Provide networking, fellowship, and mutual support; Nurture future generations of organists; Promote the organ in its historic and evolving roles; and Engage wider audiences with organ and choral music. In This Issue Chapter Programs Employment Opportunities Concert calendar Greetings from our Regional Councillor Newsletter deadline 10th of each month.
2 Congratulations to OUR Charlotte AGO! WE will be hosting the 2015 Southestern Region AGO convention. The success of our convention depends on ALL OF US! How are you going to participate? Have you thought how YOU can make our convention a success???

4 GREETINGS FROM YOUR REGION IV COUNCILLOR! WOM. In marketing circles this stands for Word-of-Mouth. I recently read The Face-to-Face Book: Why Real Relationships Rule in a Digital Marketplace (Keller & Fay, Free Press, 2012). I know, I know: this is not a book that is usually on my reading list! However, I am increasingly intrigued by social media and how the Internet impacts our interpersonal relationships. How is social media impacting the AGO? Do interpersonal relationships still matter? Marketing gurus postulate that word-of-mouth and offline interaction is critical to successful business. Word-ofmouth basics include being recommendable, easy to talk about, worth talking about, and something people feel proud to share with others. (P34) A quote from Keller & Fay made me smile: You need current customers to help with the persuasion process if converts are to be won. In other words, preach to the choir, providing them with a melody that can, in turn, help them persuade their friends and family to join your flock of customers. (P104) Enough of my book report... let me highlight a few things of importance for Region IV this spring: Grow the Guild ( is an important initiative of the AGO. The goal is chapter growth of 5%. Let s preach to the choir of organists and church musicians that are not AGO members and invite them to join us! Wouldn t it be great if all chapters in the region could increase their membership roster? Joining the national office is Bill Valentine, the AGO s new Director of Information Technology. Bill comes to the Guild with an extensive background in Information Technology. For fifteen years he worked as a programmer, systems analyst, and project manager developing large-scale Student Information Systems at Columbia University and NYU. The challenges he confronted there are similar to the ones he faces at the AGO creating systems that simultaneously serve a central administration, local offices, and individual constituents. Get face-to-face with colleagues who are dedicated to the future of quality organ and choral music. Register for the 2013 Columbia Region IV Convention today at: The American Guild of Organists has truly impacted my musical life. Help me spread the word to others about what this fine organization can do! Keep in touch, Laura Ellis LRELLIS@ufl.edu Region IV Blog: Region IV Facebook page: National Website: Lewtak Pipe Organ Builders Open House and Shop Recital As the construction of the new organ for Østerhåb Kirke in Denmark is nearing an end, there will be an open house event at the shop of Lewtak Pipe Organ Builders. It will be a chance to see and to hear the instrument which will become the very first ever American-built organ in Denmark. The recital will be performed by Ulrik Spang-Hanssen, professor of organ at the Royal Danish Music Conservatory in Aarhus. The new organ is a two manual tracker with 26 stops, 35 ranks. Stop action is electric with 2000 memory levels. The facade complementing the modern interior of the sanctuary was designed by the Danish firm of Birch and Svenning of Horsens, Denmark. The event will take place in the rented space of the Stokes County Yarn Company in Cooleemee, NC on Saturday, March 16, 2013 at 3:00 PM. Please bring your own chair!
