1 g{x V{tÜÄÉààx XÇV{tÅtwx V{tÜÄÉààx V{tÑàxÜ AMERICAN GUILD OF ORGANISTS ctññ ÇËá cüxäâwx b ur February program will celebrate the 100 th anniversary of the birth of Jehan Alain. (Jehan is an early spelling for the first name Jean, the French equivalent to John. The letter h is not to be pronounced: Jehan simply sounds like the French name Jean. Listen here for the correct pronunciation: Jehan Alain) Jehan Alain was born on February 3, 1911, in Saint-Germain-en-Laye near Paris, into a musical family. His father, Albert Alain ( ), a pupil of Guilmant and Vierne, was an organist and a composer of religious music. His brother, Olivier, and his two sisters, Marie-Odile and Marie-Claire were also to become musicians and Organists. From the age of thirteen, Jehan Alain was his father's assistant as organist in his native town. At the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, he was the pupil of André Bloch, Georges Caussade, Paul Dukas, Roger Ducasse and Marcel Dupré. He won first prizes for harmony, counterpoint and fugue, organ, and improvisation. FEBRUARY 2011 Gay Pappin, dean His Suite pour orgue was awarded a first prize in composition in In that same year, he was appointed titular organist of Saint-Nicolas in Maisons-Laffite. Throughout his short life he never ceased to compose for the piano, the organ, chamber music, voices (soloists and choirs), and the orchestra. His catalog comprises more than 140 works. Jehan Alain died in action on June 20, 1940 at the age of twenty-nine years old. Our program on February 15 at Myers Park Baptist Church at 7:30 will include a variety of works by Alain including: Dans le reve laisse par la ballade des pendus de Villon for piano performed by Michael Lehtinen, Fantasy No. 1 for organ performed by Aaron Goen, Litanies performed by Jonathan Crutchfield, Messe sung by the Chamber Singers of Queens University, Trois Movements for piano and flute performed by Connie Beach and Michael Lehtinen, Postlude pour l'office de Complies performed by M. L Marley, and a string quintet performing "Andante con variazioni and Scherzo." All of our programs are free and open to the public. You will not want to miss this interesting program! This article was taken from the website Gay Pappin The purpose of the American Guild of Organists is to promote the organ in its historic and evolving roles, to encourage excellence in the performance of organ and choral music, and to provide a forum for mutual support, inspiration, education, and certification of Guild members.
