Please register before May 26, 2008 Menu: salad, salmon with dill sauce and vegetables, triple chocolate cake The price: $25.00 For vegetarians or those with allergies, there will be an alternative. There is also a children's meal available upon request. 2 BCRMTA Victoria Student Concerts: A note of thanks to Dr. Jamie Syer for adjudicating at our last concert. Thanks, also, to all the teachers and participants who made the February Adjudicated Concert a success. Our next concert will be on: Date: Saturday, March 29, Venue: Gordon Head United Church (4201 Tyndall Road). Time: 3pm Please ensure that details of participants, works, and composers, are accurately submitted to minimize inaccuracies in the Concert Programme. The following details are required for each student: * Name of student: * Age of student: * Level: * Title of the work(s): * Name of the composer: (correctly spelled). * Duration of each work: Only names officially submitted by their teachers will be included in the concert programme. Walk-ins, on the day of the concert, will not be entertained. Submission deadline: Monday 24 March, at 9pm. Teachers are also reminded to please inform students and their families that entry is by donation, for payment for the use of the hall and the printing of the concert programmes. Suggested minimum donation amounts at the door are: $2 for individuals, $5 for families. Let us look forward to another enriching afternoon of musical fellowship. V8T 2P7 no later than April 30, MARY ADAMSON YOUNG ARTISTS PIANO COMPETITION: Wendy Maggiora The Mary Adamson Young Artist Piano Competition was held on Feb. 21 st. There were five entries from the studios of Winifred Scott Wood, May Ling Kwok, Susan de Burgh, and Jamie Syer. Sylvia Yee (student of May Ling Kwok) was the winner. Sylvia received the award of $400 and assistance in making a CD demonstrating three styles for submission to the entrance round of the Provincial Piano Competition. Sylvia is completing her 4 th year at the University of Victoria. Her graduation recital will be on March 31 st at 8 pm in the Phillip T. Young recital hall at UVic. She would be pleased to have any interested members attend. Thanks to: Simon of Tom Lee Music for his support and the donated use of the store's performance hall; May Ling Kwok for her assistance in obtaining the use of the Phillip T. Young Hall and recording equipment; Pat Williamson for doing the programs; Pam Smirl for her assistance on the night and Jim Anderson for tuning the piano before 9am! Special thanks to Arne Sahlen who gave up his one free night in Victoria to judge the event.

4 MADELEINE TILL SCHOLARSHIP: Geraldine McLean This year, although we had only one applicant for our Student Teacher Award, she was a very deserving one. Elaine Kao completed her practical ARCT Performers in the summer, performed in several charity concerts and also did some accompanying. She is active teaching piano and ukulele. The Open Performers Award was, once again, a closely contested competition. We had five performers - Kumiko Hitomi, Jennifer Mitchell, Monika Zaborowski, Kevin Ngo, and Sylvia Yee. These represented three studios, those of May Ling Kwok, Jamie Syer, and Bruce Vogt. Our judge this year was Tom Green from Toronto. This is at least the second time he has agreed to perform this task for us. The winner of the $ prize, was Sylvia Yee. Thanks once again to the Victoria Conservatory for providing us with a venue for our competition this year the Alix Goolden Hall. We had a fairly good turn out and collected $32.75 towards our scholarship fund. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the competition. CONGRATULATIONS: Congratulations to Sylvia Rickard on the world première of her new work Song for the Earth on February 22, 2008 in the Wood Hall. The work was performed by Manitoba artists Mark Rudoff cello, and Laura Loewen piano. The concert was repeated on February 23 rd at the Powell River United Church. The Song for the Earth will also be performed by cellist Stefan Hintersteininger and pianist Sarah Bowker on April 11, 2008 at the Western Front Gallery in Vancouver, as part of the Sonic Boom Festival. 5 Choirs in Concert 2008 The 15th annual fundraiser for special needs children and adults in the Cowichan Valley will take place at 2:30pm on Sunday, April 6 th at Brentwood College. Participating choirs are the Brentwood College Jazz and Concert Choirs, The Newcombe Singers, The Free Style Adult Show Choir, Acappella Plus, The City of Gardens Chorus, Mothers and Daughters, and the West Coast Girls Vocal Ensemble. For more information, contact Phil Newns or phil.newns@brentwood.bc.ca External Masterclasses with Winifred Scott Wood The Victoria Conservatory will be offering a master class for students of all levels, who are not studying with teachers on faculty at the Conservatory. The class will be held at the Conservatory on Monday, April 7 from 4:00-6:00 pm in Room 339 (Mrs. Wood s studio). The cost is $10/student/class. Please register at least two weeks before the class, by contacting Melody Benbow: benbow@vcm.bc.ca Please include the student's name, age, grade level, teacher, and repertoire to be performed. There is a limit of about five performers per class, depending on repertoire, and late registrations may be accepted if space is available. Auditors, either students or teachers, are welcome at no charge. Students performing should plan to stay for the full duration of the class.
