2 FOREWORD Welcome to Panda and the Moon! I created this sho for the students at Fuller Elementary School in Tempe Elementary School District 3, Tempe, Arizona It premiered on Feruary 6, 2014 and as an enormous affair ith over 120 student performers and a live orchestra comprised of adult musicians We presented the sho tice for a total audience of nearly 1,000 people I have een overhelmed ith the arm reception and community support the sho has received I am also delighted that Panda has found a home at Heritage Music Press and has the chance to e shared ith students, teachers, and parents everyhere At its heart, Panda and the Moon is a sho aout learning to e not only happy ith ho you are, ut proud This is a critical message for all of us! Groing up is so difficult It is my hope in the midst of the songs and humor that the performers get a chance to reflect on ho unique and special they are I ish you ell ith this sho! 3 Proection Screen The centerpiece of the staging for my musicals is a rear-proection screen, upon hich the set is proected using an LCD proector PERFORMANCE NOTES I enlisted the help of a local high school stagecraft class to create my screen It is, asically, an 8 (idth) y 7 (height) ooden frame I stretched a hite king-sized sheet (taut) over it and attached it on the ack of the frame ith a staple gun The stagecraft class also uilt a simple A-frame support for each side I painted the supports lack and attached them to the frame using and drill and long scres Stage Set-Up The stage curtain as opened ust far enough to fit the screen frame I created and hung simple utcher paper decorative anners on either side of the screen All the action of the sho happens in front of the curtain, anners and screen I alays made sure to point the hanging theatrical lighting toard the stage, ut aay from the screen as much as possile Backstage, as far ack as I could go, I placed the LCD proector on a cart, carefully aiming the proection to fit the screen in its entirety In the proector properties menu, I reversed the image so that the audience could correctly read text, such as the title of the sho The risers for the singers ere set up on the floor in front of the stage in a left arch and a right arch I left enough space eteen the riser groupings to not cover up the action area in front of the screen The director and instrumentalists ere set up on the floor sitting as lo as possile eteen the riser groupings Staging On the front of the stage, in front of the screen, I put a stage right X marking and a stage left X marking aout five feet apart using masking tape This ay, the audience can see oth the actors and the screen proections Throughout the sho, stage directions are given for the performers to go to one or the other X marking This makes teaching locking as simple as possile for the very young There are never more than to performers on the stage at a time throughout the sho 3

4 Panda CHARACTERS Panda is the main character of the story He is a plucky young ear determined to try to e something other than hat he is His emotions range from excited, disappointed, to proud We used a ear costume pattern from a craft store (asically like footie paamas ith a head piece) The faric as lack and hite fleece Moon Moon is Panda s est friend She is very old, ise and arm-hearted We asked our Moon to dress all in hite She chose to ear a very pretty, formal hite dress and it orked very ell Monkey Monkey is one of Panda s neighors at the zoo He is ild and loud We used a monkey costume pattern from a craft store (again, like footie paamas ith a head piece) The faric as ron fleece Fish Fish is one of Panda s neighors at the zoo She is very set in her ays Costuming for Fish as a challenge I ought some flexile foil covered foam oard at a hardare store I cut out to fish shapes and attached them at the nose ith duct tape I used a sharpie to make a scale pattern on the foil I then attached a pair of suspenders The performer ore all lack and the fish apparatus over the top like a sideays sandich oard 4
