A NOTE FOR BEGINNERS When enrolling for music instruction, parents and students have the option of either group or private lessons. In group settings, students develop rhythmic skills as well as improve skills of cooperation and peer interaction. In private lessons, each student may learn at his or her own pace, and the teacher is able to focus completely on that individual student s strengths and weaknesses. A child may change from group to private lessons at any time, and private lessons are encouraged for students after their first year of instruction. The Suzuki Method combines a music teaching method and a philosophy embracing the total development of the child: Character first and ability second. Prompted by a nurturing environment of parental involvement where students listen to professional recordings and use repetition of step-bystep mastery of instrumental technique, musicality, memory and reading. Parents attend lessons and direct practice at home. Violin/Suzuki: See the Youth Music Classes section on page 18 for class times. Piano/Suzuki: In order to guide home practice, parents independently attend the first four weeks of lessons in classes that offer instruction on Dr. Suzuki s philosophy and methodology, basic piano technique, and basic reading principles. Reading Nurtured by Love and Ability Development from Age Zero by S. Suzuki prior to the first parent lesson is required. Initial parental classes for Suzuki Piano participants will take place on consecutive Saturdays beginning in mid-february.
