Hear & Touch the Music Instructor: Tara Griest Thursdays, once a month 9:30 to 10:00 am or 10:15 to 10:45 am; Location: Music-Armory Building Register for the entire fall semester or individual dates: September 9 Guitar October 14 Piano November 11 Violin December 9 Hear & Touch Christmas January 13 Flute Tuition: $9 per date, per child; or register for the entire semester by 8/31/10 for the early-bird rate of $40 per child. Group rate is $7 per child/per date for 10 or more children with advance registration ** Requirements: one adult for every five children; all children in attendance six years and younger must register for class. Children 11 months and younger may attend with older siblings at no cost but must register. No charge for parent/caregiver, but must register. A vibrant experience in making music for the youngest musical masters. Each program will feature a demonstration and narration about a featured music instrument or theme, meeting and hearing a professional musician, and hands-on experience with instruments or a Hear & Touch experience with a special topic spotlight. In addition, there will be singing, dancing, and an activity sheet for each participant to take home. Parent/adult participation is strongly encouraged. Early Childhood ABC Instructors: Early Childhood Staff Thursdays, once a month 10:00 to 11:30 am; Check-in at Customer Service at 9:45 am. Program starts promptly at 10:00 am; Location: Main Building Register for the entire fall semester or individual dates: September 16 October 21 November 18 December 16 January 20 Tuition: $11 per date, per child; or register for the entire semester by 8/31/10 for the early-bird rate of $50 per child. Three areas of the arts will be sampled each date: Music/Movement - Singing, instrument playing, movement, and listening activities Theater - Introduction to theater games, pantomime, and storytelling Visual Arts - A multimedia experience with a takeaway activity My daughter loves Miss Tara and her ABC class. Our Outreach Education program offers a wide variety of arts education activities (featuring more than 80 artists), including assemblies, field trips, workshops, teacher in-services, and on-site performances for schools, social service agencies, libraries, and other community organizations. These activities provide students of all ages and abilities with quality participatory arts instruction. Arts at Beck Center (ABC) Our popular field trip, Arts at Beck Center (ABC), is a completely participatory arts sampler field trip where students grades K-12 can experience many areas of visual and performing arts firsthand. These field trips are available throughout the school year and during the summer for day camps and child care centers. Preschool-aged children from early childhood enrichment centers and preschool PTA organization are also welcome to schedule these artistic experiences. Ballet, Pointe: Youth/teens wear black camisole leotard, ballet pink tights, pink leather ballet slippers (split sole for levels 3 to 7), and hair in a bun. Adult women wear black leotard, ballet pink tights, pink leather ballet slippers, and hair off neck and fastened close to head. Boys and adult men wear white T-shirt or black leotard, black tights, black dance belt, and black ballet shoes. Tuesday; 7:00 to 7:45 pm Kids-N-Dance (Ages 2½ to 4) Instructor: Heather Sakai Children participate in dance-related activities to foster a love of movement while enhancing gross motor skills, balance, creativity, and listening skills. Parent/caregiver participates in each class. Friday; 9:15 to 9:45 am; 7 weeks per session; Session I: 9/10-10/22 or Session II: 10/29-12/17, no class 11/26; Tuition: $60 per session; Each additional child $45 per session; or register for the full 14 weeks at the discounted rate of $108 with each additional child $80. Voice (Ages 12 to Adult) Students under age 12 are encouraged to take the Pre-Teen Voice class or one of the Youth Choirs. Group Lessons Group lessons are a good way for beginners to experience an instrument and work with other students who are also beginning their musical journey. See class options under Youth Classes on pages 18 and 19 and Teen Classes on page 20. at his or her own pace, and the teacher is able to focus completely on that individual student s strengths and weaknesses. A child may change from group to private lessons at any time, and private lessons are encouraged for students after their first year of instruction. The Suzuki Method combines a music teaching method and a philosophy embracing the total development of the child: Character first and ability second. Prompted by a nurturing environment of parental involvement where students listen to professional recordings and use repetition of stepby-step mastery of instrumental technique, musicality, memory and reading. Parents attend lessons and direct practice at home. Violin/Suzuki: Please see the Youth Music Classes section on the following pages for class times. Piano/Suzuki: NEW! In order to guide home practice, parents independently attend the first four weeks of lessons in classes that offer instruction on Dr. Suzuki s philosophy and methodology, basic piano technique, and basic reading principles. Reading Nurtured by Love and Ability Development from Age Zero by S. Suzuki prior to the first parent lesson is required. Initial parental classes for Suzuki Piano participants will take place on consecutive Saturdays beginning in mid-september. This orientation will introduce parents and students to the teaching staff, let parents and students know about the program s expectations, and provide information about special events throughout the semester. This 30-minute seminar is highly recommended for parents new to theater and the audition process. The associate director of Theater Education will meet with parents to provide information about the audition and casting process. A brief presentation will be followed by a question and answer period. This is an opportunity to see what we ve been up to for the past 14 weeks.
