1 Tempo S P R I N G T h e P h o e n i x S y m p h o n y n e w s l e t t e r Play Your Part to Keep the Arts Thriving in Arizona At, we do not view our organization as simple subdivisions of orchestra, administrative staff and volunteer leadership. Instead, our donors, patrons, volunteers and community members are recognized as an integral part of what makes up the largest performing arts organization in Arizona. It is the local community that we rely on to sustain a large portion of our organizational expenses through monetary contributions. From the orchestral scores to the brilliant guest artists that grace the stage, The Phoenix Symphony relies on Annual Fund donations to make all components of an orchestral experience possible. It is with your investment that we are able to provide music to tens of thousands of patrons across the state. The expenses of community and education programs, guest artist fees, weekly series and musicians salaries well exceed the ticket revenue gained through performances. Only 50% of s operating costs are represented by ticket sales. The remaining 50% of the annual budget is produced through charitable donations from patrons like you. Currently, has fulfilled 81% of its Annual Fund Campaign goal and has until June 30, 2012, the end of the fiscal year, to reach the goal of $1.45 Million. As we conclude the 2011/12 Season, we ask you to play your role in ensuring our artistic and institutional success by making a contribution towards the Annual Fund. You are an integral part of s continued cultural presence in Arizona. Simply put, we could not do this without you. Whether it is your first gift or continued support this season, your Annual Fund contribution makes a significant impact to help us meet our goal and ensure classical music endures for future generations. Please use the perforated giving form & return envelope included in the newsletter to make your gift today! Annual Fund Campaign Goal $1,455,000 $1,000,000 $800,000 $600,000 will be the arts leader in the revitalization of a thriving Arizona $1,180,073 $400,000 $200,000 $0 is currently at $1,180,073 towards our goal of $1.45 million

2 Letter from the President Dear Patrons, On behalf of the Phoenix Symphony Musicians, Board of Directors and Administration, thank you for your patronage and loyalty to our organization. You have been instrumental in everything our organization has accomplished, especially over the past year. As you know, has experienced many transformational changes recently. From reducing our current season budget by over $1.5M to our gracious musicians who sacrificed a restoration of their salaries to forging ahead with a new mission and vision, these changes have been necessary to ensure the present and future stability of the organization. In January, we announced that our beloved Maestro Christie will be assuming a position with the Minnesota Opera in While Michael will surely be missed by the Phoenix community, we are lucky to have him as Music Director through the conclusion of the 2012/13 Season. This is also a wonderful opportunity for The Phoenix Symphony as we search for the next great talent to lead our orchestra. In light of these changes, the 2011/12 Season has been exceptional with strong ticket sales, donations, artistically stellar programming and influential education outreach efforts. We extend our sincere thanks to you for your support which has played a role in our success. In February, we announced the programming for our 2012/13 Season which begins in September. We are proud to be one of the few full time symphonies in the country to be able to offer a season of such musical variety and virtuosity. I encourage you to take a look at our exhilarating 2012/13 Season which is comprised of Classics, Pops, Family and Scottsdale Series featuring a historic array of world class guest conductors, artists and creative programming from Virginia G. Piper Music Director Michael Christie. 2012/13 Season Highlights will include: Opening Night! Sarah Hicks, the next generation of up and coming American conductors, conducts Beethoven s Violin Concerto in D Major. Ignat Solzhenitsyn, the former music director of the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia and son of Alexander Solzhenitsyn conducts the orchestra in Stravinsky s ballet Petrushka. Grammy and Oscar Award winner Patti Austin sings a tribute to Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington. A Family Series of concerts based on popular children s stories such as Babar and Tubby The Tuba. Virginia G. Piper Music Director Michael Christie s concert finale features a very personal program, Dvorak s Scherzo Capriccioso, Mozart s Prague Symphony and Lutoslawski s Concerto for Orchestra. Changes we have made over the past year ensure that will play an even greater role as the arts leader in the revitalization of the state. As a patron, I hope that you feel great pride in how far we have come and how far we re determined to go to create a bright future for all Arizonans. On behalf of, thank you for engaging with us in our mission and for your continued investment in our orchestra. I hope to see you at a concert soon. Jim Ward President & CEO Conductor Profile Sarah Hicks 2012/13 Season kicks off under the baton of the talented Sarah Hicks. Described as being a part of the next generation of up-and-coming American conductors by the New York Times, Sarah Hicks will lead for its Opening Night performance in September 2012, conducting Beethoven s Violin Concerto, performed by Elena Urioste. Sarah Hicks was born in Tokyo, Japan and raised in Honolulu, HI. Throughout her career she has collaborated with diverse artists, from Jamie Laredo and Hilary Hahn to Ben Folds and Chris Botti; she recently finished a two-month tour with Sting as conductor of the final leg of his Symphonicities Tour. Ms. Hicks was a member of the Faculty of the Curtis Institute of Music from and continues her affiliation with Curtis as Staff Conductor. Ms. Hicks was invited to Japan by the New National Theatre Tokyo, where she acted as assistant conductor to a production of Mozart s Die Zauberflöte and has performed Verdi s Aïda with the East Slovak State Opera Theater. In October of 2009 she was named Principal Conductor, Pops and Presentations of the Minnesota Orchestra; in addition to conducting most Pops and Special Presentations, she will be instrumental in creating new Pops productions while also heading the innovative classical series, Inside the Classics. She has also been Music Director of the Hawaii Summer Symphony, an ensemble she founded in 1991 in her hometown of Honolulu and which she led for five seasons.

3 Symphony Strikes a Chord with Valley Young Professional Jamie Harding, Young Professionals Board Member & her violin Jamie Harding began playing violin in elementary school and loved it. She continued in college but opted to attend law school rather than pursue a music career. Five years ago she realized how much she missed violin performance and decided to make music part of her life again. She picked up her violin, bought some new strings, and started playing. She has continued her passion for music by performing with the Scottsdale Arts Orchestra and Phoenix Baroque Ensemble. In 2011, Jamie joined the new Young Professionals Board to help spread her enthusiasm for. She attends The Phoenix Symphony concerts as often as possible. The board is in good hands with the leadership of individuals like Jamie who are passionate about sharing the joy of music with our younger generation. Jamie states, I believe classical music brings out the best in humanity, both the composition and the performance. Unfortunately, I ve noticed that the audience at TPS concerts tends to be composed of more mature individuals, and I fear that the power and the beauty of classical music is becoming lost on younger generations. I passionately believe that, with exposure to great music, individuals of all ages will develop true appreciation. I joined the Young Professional Board to further this belief. I hope to expose my generation to classical music and to TPS in particular. Our board is determined to create events that will connect with the younger generation and show them that classical music is not stuffy and that TPS concerts are fun and valuable experiences for all ages. The Young Professionals Board was formed in 2011 to promote the Symphony experience to young people in our community. A reception was hosted in February by Quarles & Brady to promote the group and the attendance was fantastic! The other 50% is produced through charitable donations from patrons like you Legacy League Members Keeping the Tradition Alive Legacy League Members, David and Karen Jones Board, Musicians, Staff and Patrons mourn the tragic loss of two beautiful souls and beloved friends of the Symphony, Larry and Glenna Shapiro. Larry and Glenna always touched the lives of those around them with their warm smiles and caring words. Their generous philanthropic efforts in the community are ones that have changed countless lives and will always be remembered. We extend our deepest sympathy, comfort and thoughts to the Shapiro family and all those who are saddened by the loss of this wonderful couple. In remembrance, David and Karen Jones moved to Phoenix after retiring to be close to one of their children in Karen was a dedicated special education teacher and David, although starting out in education, entered the Pharmaceutical industry at a young age. He built a successful sales career within two industries before opening his own sales training company. David and Karen spent the previous 25 years in the beautiful state of Connecticut where they were able to experience and enjoy a variety of arts organizations. Music has always been an important part of their lives. David played the bass until ninth grade when a multitude of sports took over his time. He was chosen to play the bass because he was the tallest boy in music class. Although he ended up choosing sports in high school, his appreciation of music continued. He and Karen have collected an extensive library of classical music over the years. Shortly after relocating here, their decorator offered them two tickets to The Phoenix Symphony. They discovered how fantastic the Symphony was and have been attending concerts and supporting the Symphony since that day. They decided to take it a step further and joined the Legacy League in With all the cutbacks in federal government, David and Karen saw first hand what happened to a number of arts organization in Connecticut. They searched their souls to find ways to help the arts and would encourage others to do the same by leaving a legacy gift. They have left a designation in their will to to help us carry on after they are gone. Remembering Larry & Glenna Shapiro

5 Musician Spotlight Anna Kim Kazepides, Principal Second Violin TPS - What is your favorite orchestral piece to play, and why? AK - I would have to say any of the Brahms Symphonies. All four of them! I could play them anytime and still find myself to be moved every single time. Love, love, love! TPS - Who is your favorite classical composer and why? AK - The three B s: Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms. I love Bach for everything that s fundamental for music, especially his Solo Violin compositions. TPS - How long have you been studying your instrument, and where did you attend school to study music? AK - I started playing the violin when I was 5 after playing the piano until age 4. Since my older sister played the piano, I wanted to do something different. I left home when I was 15 to pursue my music studies at the Juilliard School. Although I was away from my family, it was the most gratifying time of my life. I had the opportunity to meet so many amazing musicians. I ended up living in New York for 17 years before moving to Arizona. TPS - If you were not a professional musician, what would you be? AK - I often wonder that. I would have to say that I would love to be in the restaurant business. I really like to cook and entertain, and of course, there is nothing like bonding over a great meal. TPS - When you are not practicing or performing, what do you like to do? AK - I like to work out and go shopping for a great pair of shoes! My 9 year old son, Alex, decided he wanted to count how many pairs of shoes I have, and he came up with 67 pairs. Is that bad? TPS - What is on your IPod? AK - Surprisingly, I do not listen to a lot of music. I like to listen to of NPR & Talk radio. It keeps me updated on what s going on in the world. TPS - What is your favorite book and film? AK - I really like to read memoirs. They are much closer to reality and I can learn so much from them. Cinema Paradiso & The Golden Pond are my absolute favorites when it comes to films. TPS - What is the best part about performing in The Phoenix Symphony? AK - I am so grateful for having a job that allows me to work on something different every week. There is always different music, different conductors, and a different schedule. I would go crazy if I had to do the same work 9 to 5 every day of the week. I am so thankful for the unique job that I have! Board of Directors Profile Gena Trimble, Salt River Project Gena Trimble s career with SRP began in 1984 when she joined as an analyst. Over the course of two decades she has led the SRP Land Department, served as Communications Manager and within the past year was promoted Associate General Manager and Chief Communications Executive. Gena now oversees SRP s marketing and research programs to social media and product development areas to engage employees, customers and shareholders. SRP Community Involvement SRP s community involvement efforts focus on delivering the best solutions for local needs. So whether we re mentoring kids, rehabilitating homes or helping families, SRP s philosophy is simple we help build stronger, more vibrant communities by working in collaboration with our nonprofit partners. Working in collaboration with us, we believe is a vital partner that strengthens the Valley s potential by not only entertaining us, but also educating us about classical music. SRP s relationship with the Symphony is but one example in many that demonstrate our strong belief about investing in relationships and programs that strengthen the neighborhoods where our customers and employees live and work. At SRP we work very hard to make an important and immediate impact on an array of community services; and together with our community partners, we are able to enrich lives through the arts, civic leadership and caring for our natural environment as well as make a difference at the human level by supporting education and health and human services programs all over the state. We have always been and will continue to be strong supporters of the arts because they help define who we are as a community. Symphony in the news Hearing the Phoenix Symphony play this music so vibrantly, one is reinforced in the belief that nothing can match the live experience of an orchestra. Richard Nilsen I wanted to take a moment to thank the performers for allowing me to experience one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written. I am grateful that I had the opportunity. George Pauley to watch their concentration and enthusiasm as they participated in a scientific discussion of sound with the Symphony was like being a witness to a rare moment when heaven and earth seem to meet for just an instant. 7 One Nation Celebrating Our 11th Year of Commitment Symphony musician, Ron Whaley teaches a young student piano For the past 11 years, One Nation has created opportunities for musical and cultural interaction between The Phoenix Symphony and the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. The One Nation program allows for Symphony musicians to work oneon-one and in small group settings with elementary and middle school students throughout the school year to provide private lessons and mentoring for elementary and high school students from the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. Elementary students and their teachers attend daytime Symphony for the Schools concerts at no charge, and all students and their families have the opportunity to attend open rehearsals and concerts at Symphony Hall. The program is tied directly to the music curriculum of the Salt River schools. One Nation has met with tremendous success vastly improving the community s music education programs, providing continuous learning opportunities for students from elementary through high school and contributing to overall student achievement. Thousands of studies have shown conclusively that involvement in the arts is closely associated with student gains in math, reading, cognitive ability, critical thinking and verbal skills as well as motivation, concentration, confidence and teamwork. By giving the youth of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community a positive activity to focus on music performance One Nation provides an opportunity to learn from professional symphony musicians, to develop positive role model relationships and to engage in an activity during and after school that is safe, engaging and helpful in building skills for the future. Ultimately, we believe our efforts impact the self-esteem, academic success and achievement of the students involved. The Arizona Department of Education has cited the program for its success in contributing to student retention, and the program has become a model for other community programs.
