3 Welcome! Welcome to Smule s Folksongs from Around the World songbook for Ocarina here you ill learn to play eight different folk songs in no time. You ill also begin to develop a solid foundation in basic music theory along the ay. As stated in the Smule Holiday Songbook, the ord Ocarina means little goose in Italian. It is one of the oldest instruments knon to man, dating back 12,000 years. Ocarinas have been made of different materials over the years including ood, clay, bones, metal, plastic, and ell, yes... iphones! To learn more about the Smule Ocarina App, please visit Music Theory Before e dive into playing songs, let s learn a bit about the language of music. Learning music theory ill help you to become a better Ocarina player. Music can be ritten on a staff that contains five lines and four spaces. A clef indicates here notes appear on a staff. This is a treble clef. & 3
4 Music Theory Music notation is divided into measures by bar lines. A double bar line is shon at the end of a song. & Measure Bar Line Double Bar Line Rhythm notation indicates ho long or short to play a note or rest. One hole note equals to half notes. One half note equals to quarter notes. One quarter note equals to eighth notes. One eighth note equals to sixteenth notes. A time signature tells you ho many beats are in each measure. 4 Means four beats in a measure. Means a quarter note ( q ) gets one beat. 4
5 Music Theory XXMusical Alphabet Musical notes are based on the first seven letters of the alphabet. A, B, C, D, E, F, G Notes appear on the staff in alphabetical order. The first line on a treble staff is E. The notes that extend above and belo the treble staff use ledger lines. & A B C D E F G A B C D E F G Notice the letter names repeat as they move up and don the staff. Each one is an octave apart.
