2 About this ork Constantine Cavay (186-19) as the son o a ealthy Greek shiing magnate ho sent most o his lie in Alexandria and Istanbul. He is best knon or his oetic recreations o classic images o ancient Greece, and is one o my avorite oets. In late 2008, I as immersed in the rocess o choosing among Cavay s oems or to searate commissions a choral cycle ith the title This delicate universe, and a ballet or double chorus and string quartet called Aroaching ecstasy. I as translating Cavay s oems, and arranging them into libretti hen I got the nes o enno s assing. As I as reading through these hundreds o verses, oices (1904) soke to me as the erect text to commemorate enno s lie, his music, and his ever-abiding eect over generations o choral singers, including me. enno as a huge inluence over my decision to become a choral conductor and comoser, and he as my irst teacher in both o these discilines. While my career as a conductor has taken me beyond the reaches o Ne Haven, and my comositions embrace languages and singing traditions rom all over the orld, my debt to enno or his early guidance is enormous. Although I am oten loathe to admit it, enno s unorthodox gestures and humorous aroach to disciline are a huge art o my on conducting; and even though my music sounds very little like his, as I rite, I can hear enno s voice in my memory, gently reinorcing his rules that guide me to this day. Belo, you ill ind the eight lines o oices: in Cavay s original Greek, as ell as in IA (the International honetic Alhabet), hich ill elucidate ho the Greek is to be ronounced in the score.
