Emily Dickinson ( ) rogram Notes I m delighted to have been asked to comose a work or rime Voci advanced highschool ensemble o Setle Girls Choir (SGC) to hel celebre 30 th nniversary o this gre organizion. To comose a work or rime Voci is a articular joy or me because o my long history this ensemble, which des back to 1998, when I comosed a work titled The King o Glory or Ous 7 Vocal Ensemble and SGC s rime Voci. The next year I comosed The Wise and oolish or same two ensembles. During se collaborions I also had leasure o working Dr. Jerome Wright during rehearsal rocess. inally, in 2012, rime Voci articied in remiere o a 90minute ororio commissioned by Choral rts titled ietà. s I thought back to 1998, I realized th, in light o this 30 th nniversary season, I have had an associion SGC and rime Voci or 15 years, ully hal lie o organizion. Regarding Hoe, when Jake Winkler and I irst met to discuss commission, I asked him wh ideas he had in mind or iece. He rovided me a wonderul bit o insirion by asking th iece embody one o asects o mission o Setle Girls Choir: emowerment o young women as y enter adulthood. He exlained th SGC works to instill qualities o selreliance, eectiveness, excellence, accountability, and disciline in singers as art o ir overall singing exerience. The me o making transition into adulthood became my guiding light as I searched or a text, and I was articularly drawn to notion o comosing a work based on an insirional text th se talented young women could take m into adulthood and th would aid m throughout ir lives. s has haened so oten when searching or a text, I ultimely ound it in work o one o emale oets o Victorian era, in this case recluse merican oet Emily Dickinson, whose Hoe is thing ears is one o her most beloved and wellknown oems. on reading irst ew lines o oem, I knew I had ound message I wanted to share women o rime Voci: one o most owerul things th hels us through lie s challenges is hoe. In three brie stanzas o Dickinson s oem, she manages to communice roound message th, no mter our struggles and challenges, hoe is always re, it er stos all. It is us through gale and storm, it kees us warm in chilli land and on strang sea. most o all, th little bird o hoe er asks anything o us in return, even in most extreme situions. ll we need do is hold hoe ast in our hearts and dee in our souls, and it will sustain us through lie s challenges.

3 In order to relect Dickinson s me o constancy o hoe, I chose a musical structure in which same basic music is used or each stanza, relecting th sense o steadastness nure o hoe. Desite some musical variions in second and third stanzas, which relect text in each stanza, music reresenting hoe is still recognizable throughout. ollowing last line o third stanza, music reaches a oint o reose a calm in storm as soranos sing words Hoe, while altos remind us th hoe er asked a crumb o me. ter this threeold stement o Hoe, oening text and music return to remind us th hoe er stos all, and work closes one last stement o Hoe. One inal oint about music: re is something o a musical Easter egg in this iece, a hidden surrise th one might not detect unless one is in on secret: threeold rising musical me beginning o iece is similar to oening musical merial sung by treble voices in The King o Glory, irst iece I comosed or rime Voci.
