Modesto This month s guest band, The Whippersnappers, is a group peopled by some of the finest musicians Sacramento has to offer. Otis Mourning (reeds): Otis began his musical career at the age of nine when he received a clarinet as a gift. He shortly thereafter became a fulltime member of The Jazzin' Junior Jumpin' Jazz Band and later on joined The California Express. Otis performed with The River City Stomperz before helping form The Wooden Nickel Jass Band in He also performed with the legendary Sacramento R&B band The Beer Dawgs, and later toured internationally with The 10th Avenue Band. He currently plays regularly with Sister Swing, The Catsnjammers Jazz Band, Brady Mckay and the Neurotypicals, The Whippersnappers, The Chopped Liver Orchestra, The Colorblind Greens Band, and has recently joined The Titan Hot 7. Bob Williams (trombone): Bob was introduced to traditional jazz by Deck Hogin in 1979 or so. Deck introduced Bob to the Stockton Jazz Society and hired him for some early gigs in Modesto. In 1988 Bob became involved with the Sacramento Jazz Society, and played with Gene Berthelson s Catsnjammers Jazz Band and Stan Mark s River City Stomperz before helping form The Wooden (Whippersnappers Continued on page 2) Next Meeting January 15, 2012

2 2 (Whippersnappers Continued from page 1) Nickel Jass Band, which enjoyed considerable success on the Traditional Jazz circuit during its 10-year existence. Besides playing with the Pubcrawlers, Bob plays with such groups as Sister Swing and the New Orleans Ale Stars from British Columbia. He currently performs with Fulton Street Jazz Band. Renard Perry (trumpet): Renard started playing professionally in 1955 with the Silver Dollar Jazz Band at Shakey s Pizza Parlor at 57th & J in Sacramento. From there he played with Kid Ory, Dutch Duetsch's Grammercy Six, Custer's Last Band and Prime Time Jazz Band. Bill Dendle (Banjo): Bill has been a mainstay on the Dixieland and jazz scene for many years, and is renowned as an extremely funny m.c., a fast man with an ad lib, and a musical virtuoso. He has appeared at both Disneyland and Disney World, on USO tours, and countless jazz festivals and concerts. Bill has performed with: Bob Haggart, John Best, Nick Fatool, Rocky Cole, Bobby Gordon, Bob Draga, Abe Most, Johnny Varro, Dick Cary, and many other jazz greats. Darrell Fernandez (bass): Darrell was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii. Active in the Hawaii jazz scene since 1975, Darrell has played with Herb Ellis, Trummy Young, Ernie Washington, and Dave Liebman. While in Hawaii, he performed in the Kool Jazz Festival and in various Honolulu jazz spots. Since moving to Sacramento in 1990, he has been a sought-after bassist in local clubs and jazz festivals throughout California. Darrell has performed with the Fulton Street Jazz Band since Elizabeth Goodfellow (drums): Elizabeth hails from Lodi, CA where she grew up playing Traditional Jazz in Bob Romans' Alley Cats Youth Band. She studied classical percussion performance at San Jose State and has gone on to enjoy a career primarily in jazz drum set. She served six years in the Air National Guard Band of the West Coast with whom she performed for the President. Residing in San Francisco, Elizabeth freelances and is an active member of several bands including Gaucho and Steve Lucky and the Rhumba Bums. On the Traditional Jazz circuit she has performed with The Professors and the Mighty Aphrodite Jazz Band. Elizabeth hopes to continue teaching and playing this great American music for many years! Remember Our meeting date will be Sunday, January 15th, at the Clarion Inn, with jam sets beginning at 12:00 Noon. Dance, dance, dance! Put on your dancin shoes, bring a friend, and join us. The guest band this month is the Whippersnappers. You are in for some terrific live music! We hope to see lots of jammers for all the sets. We will need help with drums and sound, as Tony will be out of town. Volunteers please contact Jan or Sue! And of course, please continue to enjoy the Clarion food and bar service, because that is what pays our rent. Flambeaux: Looking forward to a special meeting in February 19, Spread the word, this is a chance to bring many guests, and potentially new members to the Jazz Society. Tom Rigney and Flambeaux will be our guest band. There will be a different schedule for that day with only two jam sets and two long guest band sets. One Day, One Price, One Location: We have started making plans for The Modesto Jazz Festival and it will be held at the Clarion Inn on May 19, The Jazz Society, along with Gottschalk Music Center and the Clarion, will assist in the planning and promotion of the event. We have secured the date and location for no charge from the Clarion. Help us choose the bands and artists you would like to see at the festival. Check the Jazzette for updates every month. Better yet, let someone know what you would like to help! The Jazz Society will meet on the following day, May 20 th. The meeting will be separate from the festival. This was a very tough year for some of us. For me, I have experienced the highest highs and the lowest lows. We have survived all that life threw at us. We have endured such insanity and tragedies before and somehow we always find our way. It makes me feel especially gratified that the club has done well, and I have all of you to thank for that success. The easiest way through the rough times for me has always been my love of music. Music makes everything a little bit better. So here's to all the magnificent moments that we wouldn't trade for anything the beautiful sounds that gave us pleasure and made us strong in I thank all our friends at the Clarion and members of MTJS for their part in making everything alright, by providing the music for listening and dancing, by keeping the Jazz Society alive and growing. Thanks to my musician friends who have always made life more beautiful with their music...for all you do to make the world a better place through music. To the musicians may everything you do in the New Year be filled with the magic and music that you have brought to so many. Together, we are saving all the many styles of jazz promises to be a fantastic, New Year for the Jazz Society! Other MTJS News Musically Speaking President s Message Article V The By-laws revision passed unanimously, at the December meeting, changing our election date to the May meeting. Thank you all for voting. Valentine Raffle The Holiday-themed Raffle was a tremendous success, netting our Jazz Society $375 in December. And, the contributions were outstanding. An enormous thank-you to everyone who donated to our monthly fundraiser. This income was divided between the general fund and the youth fund. We would like to try again in January with a raffle that features gifts or baskets with a Valentine theme. If you have something to contribute please contact Jan or JJ. 4 4 9 The club board has decided to run the monthly expenses to show the membership how money is spent each month. HAPPY NEW YEAR Wow! Where did 2011 go? We had an exciting year of music with the highlight being guest artist, Bob Draga. I hope to continue to bring in a few new bands. I had several requests for more big band/swing music, so I have two lined up for If you have any bands that you would like to hear, please tell me and I ll see what I can do to bring them to the Modesto Traditional Jazz Society. As music director for MTJS, I will appreciate anyone who would like to help/or sponsor a band(s). This reminds me, I still need a sponsor or two for our February band.tom Rigney and Flambeau. We closed out the year with Catnjammer Jazz Band. You probably know they are one of my favorite bands. I miss Gene Berthelsen on trumpet and Chuck on banjo, but Bob and Kurt are doing an excellent job. Thanks for an afternoon of great Catsnjammer wit and music. Art Gingrich was back and he brought Linda Hill along with him. It was great to see both of them. I missed Ann & Al Fosco again, but I understand they had houseguests. We had another very, very successful raffle. THANK YOU, to all of you who donated raffle prizes. I m going to try to make more of an effort to find out who donates, wins, and acknowledge them. I want to say thanks to JJ Cox for running the raffle and to Irene Stolberg & Debbie Fredrickson for helping her sell raffle tickets. Since our February session is after Valentine s Day, let s try to make January a Valentine themed raffle. Modesto Traditional Jazz Society Jazz Camp Scholarships for SACRAMENTO TRADITIONAL JAZZ SOCIETY 2012 JAZZ CAMP What: A Scholarship for Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society Youth Jazz Camp is available for a music student in the Stanislaus County Area. Where: Turn in your Application for the Scholarship to MTJS Scholarship Committee: Attention Jan Leer, Gottschalk Music Center*, 133 Burney, Modesto. When: No later than Friday, March 15, 2012 How: 1) Complete attached application form. Forms Available at (Gottschalk Music Center) 2) Write an essay about your interest and experience with jazz. 3) Obtain a letter of recommendation from your music teacher or someone who knows about your musical ability. The Scholarship Committee will include: Sue Eastman, Rozetta McNulty, and Bob Sakoi. Two candidates for the tuition scholarship will be selected, but all applications will be forwarded to Sacramento. The scholarship winners will be notified by April 1, The recipient will be asked to perform at a MTJS Club Meeting sometime after Jazz Camp. Good Luck!
