1 May/June 2017 NEWSLETTER Art on the Walls - We hope you have all been to the library recently and have noticed the beautiful art exhibit. Our Friends chapter purchased the wall art system so that KP could continue the tradition of exhibiting the works of local artists. The April show was entitled Vibrant Flowers. It featured artists, Tatiana Rezapkin and Nina Voliy. We look forward to the next display of local talent which will be installed for the month of June. It will feature the work of Malika Snail: You can check out The Green Acres School traveling art exhibit installed now in the children s area. It includes fanciful animals and colorful mandalas. Day of the Book Recap The Friends of the Library, Kensington Park Chapter sponsored Rick Campbell (left) as a special guest speaker at the 12th annual Day of the Book Festival (April 23 rd ). Rick, a retired Navy Commander, spent more than twenty years in the Navy, serving on four nuclearpowered submarines. Upon retirement, Rick was offered a two-book deal (since extended to six) by Macmillan / St. Martin s Press for The Trident Deception. It was hailed by Booklist as, The best submarine novel written in the last thirty years, since Tom Clancy s classic, The Hunt for Red October. Rick s first three books were Barnes & Noble Top-20 bestsellers, and his fourth book, Blackmail, releases in June We also hosted an FOL-KP information booth. Our volunteers greeted community members, answered questions, and encouraged interested booklovers to join our group.

2 A Breath of Fresh Air for Staff There are areas behind the scenes at KP where the air circulation is not to everyone s liking. Our chapter purchased a fan to assist in increasing the air flow in the big work area behind the main desk. Staff now is all set for the hot summer season! FOL Jazz Series We welcomed several residents from the Kensington Park Senior Living facility to our most recent jazz concert. We hope they will join us again for the next session. We hope you will be there too! MAY Performance: Christiana Drapkin and Harry Appelman Saturday, May 20, 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM / KP Library Lower Level Come enjoy Golden Standards from the Great American Song Book! Vocalist Christiana Drapkin and pianist Harry Appelman celebrate the beautiful songs written by Johnny Mercer. As a lyricist, he worked with composers Harold Arlen, Yip Harburg, Jerome Kern, Henry Mancini. The list of hit tunes seems endless. And they all speak to the heart. Come spend a beautiful hour with us. Take Note: Thanks to members like you, our Friends group maintains the piano that is used in most of these concerts. We also purchased the podium that is used for author talks.

3 FOL Author Talk Series June Speaker: Peter Cozzens author/editor of 17 books on the American Civil War/American West Tuesday, June 13, 6:30 PM / KP Library Lower Level Local author Peter Cozzens will talk about his latest book, The Earth is Weeping: the Epic Story of the Indian Wars for the American West. Peter is the winner of the $50,000 Gilder Lehrman Prize in military history for the best book published on the subject in the English Language in The book also was the Smithsonian Top History Book of the Year. At the bottom of the online form you can designate you are joining the Kensington Park Chapter. Join on paper by printing out the form at Mail your completed form to FOL- KP, 4201 Knowles Ave., Kensington, MD or turn it in to a staff member at the library s front desk. Is it time for you to RENEW YOUR MEMBERSHIP? We value our members! Membership is for one calendar year, January to December. Joining or renewing at the start of the year is most efficient for all. Of course, we welcome members and renewals at any time. So please do not feel pressure to change your payment timing. We will send renewal s three times each year. If this coincides with your timing great! By the same token, please be patient if you receive a reminder that s not in sync with your payment preference. Questions? Please contact us kensingtonpark@folmc.org. The renewal form PDF is at Looking for what to read next? READING RAVES recommended by Friends of the Library members The Last Painting of Sara de Vos by Dominic Smith (fiction) When graduate art student Ellie Shipley paints a copy of a 300-year-old Dutch painting, she faces years of consequences. The novel moves back and forth in time. We observe the life and times of three people: Sara de Vos in the mid-17th century and her painting; Marty de Groot, the wealthy Upper East Side New York and owner of the original; and to Ellie, the painter of the forgery and now a respected professor of art living in the Australia in The novel is very visual with detailed descriptions of Dutch paintings and painting techniques. Suspenseful and absorbing as Marty de Groot seeks to find the forger.

5 The March by E.L. Doctorow (fiction) This book was truly a good read. It depicts parts of the Civil War by discussing individuals of all types: military and civilian, slave and free, men and women and how they dealt with and were affected by the war. It is easy to read and is based on fact. I look forward to reading another of his historical fiction works. The Winds of War by Herman Wouk (fiction) This historical fiction novel is worth the weight of it. It is a BIG book and I could not put it down. World War Two through the eyes and experiences of a military family from Berlin to the south Pacific. It gives interesting insights in personalities like FDR and Churchill, discusses small town life in war torn areas of Europe, the intricacies of moving from country to country as the war spreads and moves around you, and throughout it all, the effects on the central family members as they become involved or just try to live with the war. I am looking forward to the sequel titled War and Remembrance. We serve on the FOL because we love libraries. Your feedback & involvement are welcome, too.
