3 Make Your Ensemble s Career Since 1956 JMD has endeavored to support and highlight the artistic achievements of young chamber music ensembles. Through its core values of quality, authenticity and community, the chamber music course challenges each group to realize its potential. World class teachers guarantee a chamber music experience at the highest level. The teacher-student interaction at JMD goes far beyond that of a conventional summer course; in Weikersheim, every professor seeks to discover and mold the individual identity of each young group. Daily lessons expand each young musician s horizons through musical reflection and exposure to different points of view. Likewise, the intense daily rehearsal schedule and interaction with colleagues from different countries encourage students to go beyond their own boundaries and limitations. Ensembles are offered the opportunity to perform publicly in a series of concerts. Concert promoters are invited to the performances and an internal prize granted by the Friends of Jeunesses Musicales is awarded to the Most Promising Newcomer. Thanks to generous donations from public and private sponsors, scholarships are also available to students demonstrating need. The inspiring setting of the picturesque medieval town of Weikersheim, with its stately Renaissance castle and scenic Baroque park, animate the process of musical discovery for teachers and students alike.

4 Tutors Photo: Molina Visuals Cuarteto Casals Abel Tomàs violin Vera Martínez violin Jonathan Brown viola Arnau Tomàs violoncello A quartet for the new millennium if I ever heard one wrote the Strad magazine upon hearing CUARTETO CASALS for the first time, shortly after its inception in 1997 at the Escuela Reina Sofía in Madrid. Since winning First Prizes at the London and Brahms-Hamburg competitions, Cuarteto Casals has been a repeated guest at the world s most prestigious concert halls in Europe, North America and Asia. To celebrate its 20th anniversary season, Cuarteto Casals has embarked on an ambitious project: a six-concert series of the complete Beethoven quartets, accompanied by six commissioned works from composers of its generation, to premiered at the Wigmore Hall, the Konzerthaus in Vienna, L Auditori in Barcelona and many other important venues. Moreover, Cuarteto Casals is recording the complete Beethoven cycle to be released in three box sets over the next three years, culminating in 2020, the 250th anniversary of the Composer s birth. The Quartet has compiled a substantial discography with the Harmonia Mundi label, including 9 CD s with repertoire ranging from lesser known Spanish composers to Viennese classics through 20th Century Greats, as well as a live

5 DVD recording of the complete Schubert quartets, for Neu Records. A prize from the prestigious Burletti-Buitoni Trust in London enabled the Quartet to purchase a matching set of Classical period bows which it uses for works from Purcell through Schubert, refining its ability to distinguish between musical styles. In addition, the Quartet has been profoundly influenced by its work with living composers, especially György Kurtag, and has given the world premiere of quartets written by leading Spanish composers. In recognition of Cuarteto Casals unique position as the first Spanish string quartet with a truly international profile, it has been honored with the Premio Nacional de Música as well as the Premi Ciutat Barcelona. Cuarteto Casals has also accompanied the King of Spain on diplomatic visits and performs yearly on the peerless collection of decorated Stradivarius instruments in the Royal Palace in Madrid where it will be Quartet in Residence through In addition to giving much sought-after masterclasses, Cuarteto Casals is Quartet in Residence at the Escola Superior de Musica de Catalunya in Barcelona where all four members reside and teach. Heime Müller (prev. Artemis Quartet) Heime Müller studied violin with Marianne Petersen, Uwe-Martin Haiberg, Ulf Hoelscher and Nora Chastain. From 1991 until 2007 he performed as 1st or 2nd violinist of the famous Artemis Quartet around 900 concerts all around the world. Recordings of his became awarded with Deutscher Schallplattenpreis, Diapason d Or and Echo Klassik. Heime Müller is a renowned teacher for violin and for chamber music. He taught at the University of Arts in Berlin and is currently professor for violin and chamber music at the Musikhochschule Lübeck. Moreover, he holds a professorship for string quartet at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Madrid. He frequently gives masterclasses all over Europe. Heime Müller is the artistic director of the Jeunesses Musicales International Chamber Music Campus in Weikersheim.

6 Tutors The Weilerstein Duo Donald Weilerstein violin Vivian Hornik Weilerstein piano The Weilerstein Duo has been acclaimed nationally and internationally for its performances and teaching. Their discography includes two volumes of the complete works by Ernest Bloch for violin and piano, the sonatas of Janácek, Enescu, and Dohnanyi, and the complete Schumann sonatas. The Duo has given recitals in the major cities of the United States, Europe, Asia, South America, and Israel. The Duo returns regularly to the Yellow Barn Music Festival and the Perlman Music Program and has participated in many other festivals throughout the world. They were recently guest artists at the Hannover Hochschule, Guildhall, and at the Lübeck Conservatory. The Weilersteins are on the faculty of the New England Conservatory of Music, the Juilliard School and the Aspen Music School. They are in great demand for master classes. Donald Weilerstein s students have been prizewinners in major national and international competitions. Vivian Hornik Weilerstein is the director of the Professional Piano Trio Training Program at the New England Conservatory in addition to serving on NEC s piano and chamber music faculties. They are co-founders of Transatlantic Encounters which will have its inaugural season in Aldeburgh, UK in October In his twenty years as first violinist of the Cleveland Quartet, Donald Weilerstein toured the world and made numerous recordings on the RCA, Telarc, CBS, Phillips, and Pro Arte labels which won seven Grammy nominations and Best of the Year awards from Time and Stereo Review. Early in his career he won both the Munich and Young Concert Artists Competitions. He is the recipient of the American String Teachers Associations s Artist Teacher Award for Vivian Hornik Weilerstein performs frequently as a collaborator with many of today s most eminent artists and ensembles. Performances include concerts in Japan and Europe. She has also recorded for the EMI debut series. Donald and Vivian perform with Alisa Weilerstein as the Weilerstein Trio. The Trio s CD featuring trios of Dvorak received rave reviews in both Strings and Fanfare magazines and was featured on NPR s All Things Considered. Their subsequent recording includes trios by Janacek and Schumann.

7 Application and Admission Application is intended for chamber music ensembles already existing and aiming for a professional career. All invited ensembles become scholarship holders of Jeunesses Musicales Germany. Applications may be submitted online at until 30 April 2018 Please beware of the deadline, as the jury will make its choice shortly thereafter. Only fully completed forms will be considered. The following application material is mandatory: Curriculum vitae of the ensemble (indicating previous competitions, prizes, major concerts, recording, etc.) individual CVs, reference letters from professors or tutors and press critics, recent/new audio recordings of the ensemble (mp3, mp4 or VLC via YouTube link or Dropbox) min. 15 minutes.
