In addition to music classes with old-time fiddler Bruce Molsky, Mick Moloney s culture classes trace the evolution of old-time American, country and bluegrass music that resulted from a multicultural tapestry of immigrant and ethnic foundations. A limited number of parking passes for MSOE lots are available to students at a cost of $5 per day (see registration form). $40 PARKING TICKETS will be issued to cars that do not display a prepaid parking pass. Schuster Memorial SUMMER SCHOOL Scholarship This scholarship of $200 for music students ages 12 to 21 is named for Jim Schuster ( ). Jim was a piano virtuoso well-known in the late 1950s in the local jazz community for the talent and vitality showcased by his trio. Jim, with a happy mix of German and Irish ancestry, combined musical gifts, discipline, and fun. Through two decades of Irish Fests, the only one he missed was in the last year of his life. 3 TUESDAY-THURSDAY ADULT * DAY CLASSES * Children 11 years and older may register for adult classes at the discretion of the instructor. Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday Daytime Classes (see schedule on last page for times) Arts/Crafts Aran Knitting Two experienced Aran knitters will teach those with a knowledge of basic knitting the history as well as various techniques of this intriguing craft. Students should bring their own yarn, knitting needles and a cable needle. Joyce Ennis and Jo Winkler Bley are passionate about Aran knitting and love to share their enthusiam with fellow knitters. Joyce has been knitting since she was a child and learned Aran knitting on the island of Inis Mhór. Jo taught herself while biking around the United Kingdom. She currently runs the Will Ewe Teach Me youth classes at the Wisconsin Sheep and Wool Festival where Joyce also teaches. Basket Weaving I & II Vincent McCarron will teach you to weave traditional baskets once used daily by Aran Islanders. Each class will be limited to 10 students. Session I is for students with no prior basketweaving experience; session II is for students with prior experience. There will be a $40 materials fee payable to instructor. Vincent McCarron lives on Inishmore, Aran Islands. He has a studio outside of Kilmurvey where he weaves and conducts full-day and multi-day workshops on the art. Vincent is considered one of the greatest proponents of the ancient craft. Celtic Design An introduction to Celtic design techniques using a variety of materials, including metal. $10 materials fee payable to instructor. Please feel free to bring drawing paper, colored pencils and any other of your favorite art media. You may the instructor at pat@celtart.com if you have any questions. Patrick Gallagher is a professional artist, designer, sculptor and print maker. He specializes in decorative architectural artifacts for public, private and spiritual environments and has helped make Celtic art a modern phenomenon. His expertise is in the Book of Kells style and design work. Patrick has taught Celtic Studio Art at hundreds of venues, including the Summer Celtic Art Workshops at the Oideas Gael School at Glencolumkille in Ireland. Culture Celtic Spirituality Not just for those who are Irish, Welsh, Scottish, or Breton, the rediscovery of Celtic Christianity has been a delight for millions around the world who are intrigued by this rich tradition. Using ancient poetry, art, song, storytelling and the legacy of prayers and blessings, explore the many examples of spirituality found in the Celtic tradition. Julianne Donlon, born and educated in Ireland, is an inspirational speaker who currently works for the Diocese of Green Bay, Wis., as director of adult faith formation. Influenced by her life in Ireland and interest in Celtic spirituality, she infuses her talks, seminars and retreats with passion and a fresh perspective. Irish Influences on American Music Mick Moloney will present musical history in three parts: If It Wasn t For the Irish and the Jews Exploring Irish and Jewish Historic Musical Links and Influences on Vaudeville and Early Tin Pan Alley in America; Ned Harrigan and the Irish Roots of Broadway; and Hillbilly and Bluegrass Roots in Ireland and Africa. Mick Moloney combines the careers of folklorist, arts presenter, professional musician and radio and television personality. He has been awarded the National Heritage Award from the National Endowment for the Arts, the highest official honor a traditional artist can receive. Irish Storytelling with a 21st Century Seanachie In this unique class, consummate Irish storyteller Máirtín de Cógáin will give examples of different genres with an emphasis on folklore. Included will be The Ulster Cycle, The Fenian Cycle, 12th century writings, the international traveling folktale and the urban legend. Máirtín will also demonstrate and teach the crucial idea of the mask of the storyteller as well as how to make a story your own. There will be discussions on important nuances in storytelling such as presentation and speech cadence. Máirtín de Cógáin from County Cork is the front man, bodhrán player, lead vocalist and a founding member of the Fuchsia Band. He followed generations of his family as a noted storyteller, and studied folklore in university. Máirtin has won two All-Ireland Awards in storytelling. He is also an actor, most notably in the film The Wind that Shakes the Barley. Dance American Contra Dances of the 1860s Sample Civil War-era contra dances, including those recorded by the Scots-Irish community of Belfast, Maine, and dozens collected by Elias Howe, Jr. Dances will include Girls of Belfast, Money Musk, Lady of the Lake, Irish Washwoman, Caledonian Quadrille and Lancer s Quadrille. Participants will each receive a complimentary copy of The Ball-Room Manual, which contains 58 good old Contra Dances of our ancestors. Patricia Lynch is co-founder of the West Side Soldiers Aid Society, Inc., and dance mistress of the West Side Victorian Dancers. She has been dancing since childhood and has performed with the Caledonian Highland Dancers and the Kalaniot Israeli Dancers. Sean Nós Dance This class explores sean nós or old style dance, the loose-limbed, improvisational style of traditional solo dancing. Brian Cunningham has taught and performed internationally. In 2006 he won the Senior Sean Nós Dancing Competition at the All-Ireland Oireachtas. Set Dancing Enroll in one or enjoy both sessions of set dance taught by a master of the art: Monday through Wednesday 7-9 p.m. or Tuesday through Thursday :30 p.m. Both sessions will include a mix of reel sets and polkas, and each session will be different with no overlap. Emphasis will be footwork and the individual characteristics of each set. Padraig McEneaney, a set dance master from County Louth, has taught throughout North America and Europe and has produced two teaching DVDs with his own group Faoi Do Chois (On your feet). His clear instructional style lets dancers quickly pick up new sets. This is his first teaching visit to the Midwest. LANGUAGE Irish, Beginning Simple greetings, basic conversation, sampling of blessings, curses and proverbs are all part of this course in one of Europe s oldest languages. Bairbre Ní Chiardha inherited a love of the Irish language and culture from her native Cois Fharraige in County Galway, Ireland. She pursued a career in education and currently resides in Milwaukee teaching Irish at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Irish, Intermediate Liam O Cuinneagain will present a class for those who have recently begun learning Irish or are returning to the language. Basic vocabulary, grammar and phrases will be taught. Students will also do some role-playing. The class will be based on the Enjoy Irish course. Go to for more information. Liam O Cuinneagain is a teacher and director of Oideas Gael, the adult Irish language school located in Glencolmcille, County Donegal. He is also the head of Udaras na Gaeltachta, the Enterprise and Cultural development agency for Ireland s Gaeltacht (Irish speaking regions). Irish Anthology, Sult This bilingual workshop for students and fans of the Irish language will include verse, drama, song and fun. It is aimed at intermediate and advanced levels, but beginners are welcome. Ray Mac Mánais is the principal of Gael Scoil in the Dublin area. The speech writer and Irish language advisor to Ireland s former president, Mary McAleese, he published her biography, Máire Mhic Ghiolla Íosa: Beathaisnéis. Music-SONG Sean-Nós Singing Explore this ancient style of unaccompanied singing with one of Ireland s top exponents. The highly ornamented telling of emotions and events is closely associated with the Gaeltacht or Irish speaking areas of Ireland. Nollaig Ní Laoire from Dunderry, Ireland, is the youngest winner ever of the Corn Uí Riada (Seán Riada Trophy), the highest accolade in sean-nós singing, she is also the first winner from County Meath. MUSIC INSTRUMENTAL (see additional music class information) Banjo Tenor Banjo Explore melody playing on the tenor banjo through intermediate/advanced techniques for both your picking and fretting hands. You ll learn new tunes, ornamentation, and focus on tone to improve your playing. Gerry O Connor from Dundalk, County Louth, is one of Ireland s premier tenor banjo players and considered one of the best banjo players in Ireland s history. Gerry gives a unique treatment to traditional Irish compositions as well as to American bluegrass with his original music. Along with solo work and collaborations with other artists, he has been a member of the acclaimed band Four Men and a Dog since Bodhrán Beginning; and Bodhrán Intermediate Our local expert, Patrick Roe, will teach two classes, one for beginning players and one for intermediate level musicians. Beginning students will learn the basics of the Irish drum, the bodhrán (bow-rawn), history of the instrument, its evolution and use in traditional Irish music, playing styles and basic techniques for the two most popular forms of traditional Irish music, the jig and the reel. The intermediate class dovetails with the beginning class, introducing the three additional popular forms the slip jig, the hornpipe and the polka. Other techniques to be covered: double down sticking and its integration with single stroke patterns, bringing out the music by manipulating the skin with the backside hand, back beat accents, using triplets and creating pattern variations to play more musically. Patrick Roe began drumming in his teens, influenced by big band and jazz greats as well as rock drummers. He has studied the bodhrán in both the U.S. and Ireland and has played with such diverse groups as Americay, Anam Ri, Cé, Ceol Cairde, Different Drums of Ireland, Frogwater, Leahy s Luck and Stone Ring. He also teaches year-round at the Irish Fest School of Music. Bodhrán Advanced Máirtín de Cógáin of the Fuchsia Band will teach advanced bodhran accompaniment for experienced players. Beginning with assessing students posture and striking technique, the intricacies of various rhythms and techniques are then introduced. The students will go home with a great grasp of how to keep rhythm while hearing the tune at the cadence of the main melody player. Máirtín de Cógáin, bodhran player and front man for the Fuchsia Band, has taught at the Catskills Irish Arts Week and St. Louis Tionól as well as giving workshops at major Irish festivals. Button Accordion Improve your accordion skills with one of Ireland s most respected musicians, Jackie Daly. Through new tunes, exercises, and techniques, you ll expand your abilities and playing style. Jackie Daly, born in County Cork, is a button accordion and concertina player who is credited with helping establish the button accordion as a concert instrument. He has been a member of many prominent bands including DeDannan, Patrick Street, Arcady and Buttons and Bows. Jackie is also known for influential partnerships with fiddlers such as Kevin Burke and currently with Matt Cranitch. 4 Fiddle, Intermediate; and Fiddle, Advanced Liz Carroll will teach two classes, one for intermediate level musicians and one for advanced level musicians. Liz Carroll has been amazing audiences with her fiddle playing since she was a teenager. Her concert, television and radio appearances have established her as one of traditional music s most sought after performers. Liz and guitarist John Doyle were nominated for a 2010 Grammy award in the Best Traditional World Music Album category. Fiddle, Intermediate; and Fiddle, Advanced Sliabh Luachra Style Matt Cranitch will teach two classes, one for intermediate level musicians and one for advanced level musicians, focusing on the distinctive Sliabh Luachra fiddle style. Matt Cranitch from County Cork is a well-known fiddle player, scholar, teacher and writer. A founder of the band Na Fili, he is currently a member of the band Sliabh Notes and the author of The Irish Fiddle Book. Matt is also engaged in ongoing research on the fiddle style of Ireland s Sliabh Luachra, the district on the borders of Cork and Kerry. Fiddle, Introduction to Irish Fiddle (NOT FOR BEGINNERS) Discover what distinguishes Irish fiddle from violin! Key bowing patterns and clear explanations of ornamentation will help you understand what makes a tune sound Irish. Tips on learning by ear will be discussed and several tunes will be taught. Mostly, we ll have fun! Maria Terres, a three-time All-Ireland qualifier on fiddle and senior céilí band, is in demand as a teacher, dance fiddler, performer, feis musician and recording artist. She has provided music for many theatrical productions and is the lead fiddler for the Cream City Ceili Band and the Madison-based Last Gaspé (New England Contra Dance Band). Flute Intermediate/Advanced Improve your flute playing in a class centered around the structure, tonality and learning of Irish traditional flute tunes from the various regions on Ireland s musical map. Mick Heffernan, from Carrigaline in County Cork, is a founding member of the Fuchsia Band. Mick starting playing music at a young age and is an accomplished Irish flute and guitar player. He teaches classical and traditional flute in the County Cork School of Music and has conducted music workshops at home and abroad. Please note: several levels of an instrument are taught. Beginner: Someone who has never played the instrument or has only taken a few beginner level courses. Intermediate: Someone who plays confidently and is ready for ornamentation and techniques. Advanced: Someone who has reached at least the amateur performer level. Children: Children with some proficiency on an instrument may enroll in an adult class with the permission of the instructor. MUSIC CLASS INFORMATION Guitar Intermediate/Advanced Mick Heffernan takes you on an in-depth journey into all aspects of acoustic guitar playing in traditional music. Fundamentals of guitar accompaniment will be taught, including history, harmony, tuning and strumming techniques. Mick Heffernan (See Flute-Int./Adv. class above.) Mandolin Irish Mandolin In this class you will learn new tunes along with the various different techniques used to enhance the playing of Irish traditional music on the mandolin. The class concentrates on the playing of the melody of tunes as opposed to chords and the backing of tunes. It s perfect for pickers who know their way around the fretboard and want to learn Irish music. Brian McGillicuddy, a talented musician from Inniscarra in County Cork, plays banjo, mandolin, and whistle in the Cork-based Fuchsia Band. His first instrument was the D whistle, which he began playing at age 5. Along with performing, Brian has been teaching music to adults and children for 15 years. Sliabh Luachra Repertoire (Open to Musicians in All Instruments) Learn tunes from the Rushy Mountain or as it is known in Irish, Sliabh Luachra, the district on the borders of northwest Cork and east Kerry along the River Blackwater. The area is famous for a very distinctive style of playing characterized by energetic polkas, slides, and hornpipes for set dancing. This class is open to all instruments. Jackie Daly (See Button Accordion class above.) Whistle Beginning Learn the beginning techniques and history of the instrument, the scale and a tune or two. Asher Gray has been playing Irish traditional music on tin whistle, wooden flute, bodhrán and bouzouki since 1997, and has several recordings. Asher teaches at the year-round Irish Fest School of Music and currently plays in the band Myserk. Whistle Intermediate/Advanced This class will help you to improve how you play Irish traditional music on the tin whistle. New tunes will be taught along with the different types of ornamentation and techniques that are used on the tin whistle. You will need a D whistle for this class. A limited number of tin whistles are available for purchase at the Fáilte Desk. Private Lessons: Some instructors offer individual lessons. Old-Time Fiddle Master Class with Bruce Molsky We will survey American southern mountain styles from Texas to North Carolina and from Georgia to the Midwest, making stops along the way to dig into some tunes in detail. Emphasis will be on using the bow to make rhythm, on proper phrasing, and just making the fiddle speak. We ll spend some time learning to grab a tune from the air (the aural tradition) and put it on the instrument. Participants should have good ear training skills. Class will also treat singing with the fiddle. MUSIC WORKSHOPS One-DAY INSTRUMENTAL WORKSHOPS Bruce Molsky comes at southern roots and blues on fiddle, banjo, guitar and song with a great depth of spirit. He is one of the premier, old-time fiddlers and the defining virtuoso of Appalachia s timeless folk music traditions. Known for collaborations with artists from other cultures, he is a member of Andy Irvine and Dónal Lunny s acclaimed band Mozaik and also tours with Shetland Islands fiddler Aly Bain and Sweden s Ale Möller. His band Fiddlers 4 with Darol Anger and Michael Doucet was nominated for a Grammy Award in Bruce is also a faculty member at Berklee College of Music in Boston and a frequent instructor at colleges and camps in the United States and Europe. We offer an Irish Stew of mini-courses on Friday, leaving plenty of time to get to the festival grounds! Classes start at 9:00 a.m. or 10:45 a.m., or take a walking tour beginning at 1 p.m. Enroll individually by time slot. Friday sampler classes are included in the Full Week Adult/Family rate. Asher Gray has been playing Irish traditional music on tin whistle, wooden flute, bodhrán and bouzouki since 1997, and has several recordings. Asher teaches at the year-round Irish Fest School of Music and currently plays in the band Myserk. Celtic Art If you ever wondered where Celtic art developed, what it means and why it is still meaningful, this class is for you. The intriguing history and continued fascination with this ancient art form will be brought to life by a nationally-renown expert. Patrick Gallagher (See Celtic Design class.) Introduction to the Irish Language Learn phrases in the Irish language useful in meet and greet settings. Practice pronouncing common Irish place names, song titles and other expressions which could be helpful during Irish Fest! Bairbre Ní Chiardha inherited a love of the Irish language and culture from her native Cois Fharraige in County Galway, Ireland. She pursued a career in education and currently resides in Milwaukee teaching Irish at the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee. Early American Contra Dance Sampler Try some Civil War-era contra dances and Germans (dance games) including The Mysterious Cloth and The Basket, the Fan and the Flower. The dances are low-impact and easy to learn. Patricia Lynch is co-founder of the West Side Soldiers Aid Society, Inc., and dance mistress of the West Side Victorian Dancers. She has been dancing since childhood and has performed with the Caledonian Highland Dancers and the Kalaniot Israeli Dancers. Hillbilly and Bluegrass Roots in Ireland and Africa In a presentation rich with audio and visual illustrations as well as live performance, Mick Moloney traces the story of old-time, country and bluegrass music that has resulted from a multicultural tapestry which includes the Scotch Irish (Ulster Scots) along with their African-American neighbors and other native and immigrant groups. Mick Moloney combines the careers of folklorist, arts presenter, professional musician and radio and television personality. He has been awarded the National Heritage Award from the National Endowment for the Arts, the highest official honor a traditional artist can receive. Tin Whistle - Beginning Spend a morning trying this easy-to-learn Irish instrument. Brett Lipshutz has been involved with Irish music for more than 20 years and has taught flute and whistle in programs such as the Grand Canyon Celtic Arts Academy and the Association Irlandaise in Paris, France. As a performer, he has toured with the Trinity Irish Dance Company, is a feis musician, plays for set and ceili dances and is currently a member of the Milwaukee band Myserk. NEW! Afternoon Tour Starts at 1 p.m. Walking Tour of the Irish Third Ward Join Mary MacAndrews for a tour of the Third Ward, Milwaukee s first Irish community which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Just south of downtown Milwaukee, the Third Ward is associated with the sinking of the Lady Elgin in 1860 and a massive fire in Mary will explain the transition of the area from the ashes of that fire to the current renaissance. The tour is within walking distance of the Irish Fest grounds. Mary McAndrews is a longtime guide with Historic Milwaukee. She an active member of the Irish Cultural and Heritage Center and the Shamrock Club of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Chapter. 9-10:15 a.m. Drama We will do fun theater exercises and develop the interesting characters that inhabit the world of the wee folk. When the wee folk meet Tim O Toole, the fun begins and the play s the thing. Kathleen Mohr is well-known as The Pocket Lady TM. She brings her one-woman theater troop of over 30 costumed characters to schools, festivals and other events in the Greater Milwaukee area. Friday Morning Is for Kids, Too! These three mini-courses, held between 9:00 a.m. 12:15 p.m. on Friday, are geared for children 6-10 years old. Children who enroll for the entire morning should be dropped off at 8:45 a.m. and picked up at 12:15 p.m. at the Fáilte Desk. Friday sampler classes are included in the Full Week Family rate.
