Monday 20th July Wolfscastle Country Hotel Festival Lunch 12:30pm SA62 5LZ with guest speaker Owain Arwel Hughes, CBE We launch our 2015 Festival in the company of our President, Owain Arwel Hughes. He looks over his long career travelling the world conducting leading orchestras and reflects on the pleasure that music has brought to his life. He will also speak about the sacrifices that come with being part of such a highly competitive and public profession. Tickets: 20 Monday 20th July St Peter s Church, Goodwick SA64 0EH Wendy Dawn Thompson mezzo soprano Christopher Diffey tenor Peter Donohoe piano Scriabin Piano Sonata No 6 (The Demon) Schubert Piano Sonata in A D959 Mahler Das Lied von der Erde (Song of the Earth) Listening to Mahler s Das Lied von der Erde can feel as though you re being directly addressed by the composer and this is particularly the case when performed with Mahler s original piano accompaniment. Little wonder. Mahler described the work (written as he grappled with the diagnosis of an incurable heart condition) as probably the most personal composition I have created. Equally personal expressions come from Scriabin and Schubert, whose penultimate piano sonata closes with a final movement that must be amongst the loveliest things ever composed. Tickets: 20 3
Tuesday 21st July St Davids Cathedral Welsh National Opera Orchestra SA62 6RD Tomáš Hanus Camilla Roberts conductor soprano Prokofiev Classical Symphony Tchaikovsky Letter Scene from Eugene Onegin Tchaikovsky Symphony No 4 Tchaikovsky never did anything by halves and he certainly didn t stint on emotion. But there is far more to his work than unashamedly wearing his heart on his sleeve. The letter scene from his opera Eugene Onegin displays his mastery of storytelling as he brilliantly portrays a hesitant young girl pouring out her feelings of first love whilst his fourth symphony confirms his profound gift for melody, rhythm and rich, exuberant, orchestral colour. Tickets: Front Nave 25; Rear Nave 20; Side Aisles 12 NB All seats unreserved Festival Bus to St Davids: 4 (Picking up at Cardigan, Newport, Dinas Cross, Fishguard & Goodwick) 4 Wednesday 22nd July 2pm St Mary s Church, Fishguard SA65 9AU Art, Love and War Getting to know the Davies Sisters of Llandinam Trevor Fishlock recalls the lives of Gwendoline and Margaret Davies, two retiring spinsters from mid Wales. Despite being born to enormous wealth built on the coalfields of South Wales they were instilled with an iron sense of social responsibility and philanthropy and throughout their lives, supported great causes in the fields of health, education and culture, culminating in their parting gift to the people of Wales - an art collection to rival any in Europe. Tickets: 5
Wednesday 22nd July St Peter s Church, Goodwick Fitzwilliam Quartet SA64 0EH with Moray Welsh cello Donizetti Introduzione Purcell Fantasias Nos. 6 and 11 Marcus Barcham-Stevens Doubles on Fantasias 6 and 11 by Purcell Beethoven String Quartet in F minor Op 95 Schubert String Quintet in C Sublime is an adjective frequently bandied around but we think it is a fitting description of Schubert s Quintet. The sheer beauty of the melodies and its heartfelt emotion is enough to take your breath away. Also in the programme, high charged intimacy from Beethoven and small scale gems from two kings of the theatre world, Purcell and Donizetti. Tickets: 18 Thursday 23rd July 8pm Neuadd y Dderwen, Rhosygilwen, Cilgerran SA43 2TW Darius Brubeck Quartet Darius Brubeck piano Matt Ridley bass Wesley Gibbens drums Dave O Higgins saxophone Following in the footsteps of his famous father Dave, Darius Brubeck has built an international reputation in his own right as an acclaimed pianist, band leader and composer. He performs with his quartet a lively mix of original compositions, Brubeck hits, and South African jazz. More than half a century after Dave Brubeck invited listeners to start counting in odd numbers, the music has lost none of its poise Darius is as cultured a pianist as his father. The Times Tickets: 15 Festival Bus to Rhosygilwen: 4 (Picking up at Goodwick, Fishguard, Dinas Cross, Newport & Cardigan) 5
Friday 24th July St Davids Cathedral BBC National Orchestra of Wales SA62 6RD Thomas Søndergård conductor Peter Donohoe piano Klara Ek soprano Fauré Ballade Op 19 Ravel Piano Concerto in G Mahler Symphony No 4 BBC National Orchestra of Wales gives a preview of its forthcoming London Proms performance with this concert under the baton of their Principal Conductor, Thomas Søndergård. Close your eyes and let Ravel transport you back to the roaring twenties and a light hearted world of flapper girls, blues and jazz. The optimism continues in the shortest and sweetest of Mahler s symphonies with its radiant vison of heaven as seen through the eyes of a child. Tickets: Front Nave 25; Rear Nave 20; Side Aisles 12 NB All seats unreserved Festival Bus to St Davids: 4 (Picking up at Cardigan, Newport, Dinas Cross, Fishguard & Goodwick) Saturday 25th July 2pm Meeting point: Fishguard Town Hall SA65 9HE Last Invasion Town Walk Led by Edward Perkins this guided walk tours to some of the places associated with the last invasion of Britain in 1797, ending with a visit to the Fishguard Last Invasion Tapestry. Tickets: 5 6
Saturday 25th July St Davids Cathedral Côr Dyfed Choir Oliver Waterer conductor Rhian Lois soprano Paul Carey Jones baritone Jocelyn Freeman piano Maxime Tortelier piano Brahms Ein Deutsches Requiem (A German Requiem) SA62 6RD Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted. The opening words of Brahms s A German Requiem establish the tone for a work which sets out to offer hope and consolation. This is not a requiem for the dead; rather it is directed to those left behind, among them Brahms himself who was profoundly affected by the passing of his mother and great friend Schumann. Though born from a man grieving, the word that appears most in the text is freude or joy. The result is one of the most moving expressions of emotion, strength of faith and peace of mind. Tickets: Front Nave 18; Rear Nave 14; Side Aisles 10 NB All seats unreserved Festival Bus to St Davids: 4 (Picking up at Cardigan, Newport, Dinas Cross, Fishguard & Goodwick) Sunday 26th July St Mary s Church, Fishguard Festival Service A celebration of readings, prayers and music. All welcome SA65 9AU 7
Monday 27th July St Mary s Church, Newport Frith Piano Quartet Schumann Frank Bridge Dvořák 2pm SA42 0PP Piano Quartet in E flat, Op.47 Phantasy Quartet Piano Quartet No2 in E flat, Op.87 Ever popular visitors to the Festival, the Frith Quartet return with an afternoon concert of musical delights. All three works share a mood of playfulness, joy and excitement, not to mention a feast of great tunes. As Dvořák said of his quartet it came easily and the melodies just surged upon me. Thank God. It is only left for us to enjoy. Tickets: 15 Monday 27th July St Peter s Church, Goodwick SA64 0EH QuintEssential with Elin Manahan Thomas soprano Daniel Auchincloss tenor David Miller theorbo One of Wales s finest sopranos, Elin Manahan Thomas joins the early music group QuintEssential to sweep us back to 17th century Venice and music created for the churches, places and grand houses on the banks of the canals. Works by Gabrieli, Monteverdi, Scarini and Merula provide an absorbing window to our ancestors musical tastes. Tickets: 15 Tuesday 28th July 2pm St Peter s Church, Goodwick SA64 0EH Alicia s Gift Jessica Duchen narrator Peter Donohoe piano Jessica Duchen s acclaimed novel Alicia s Gift follows the piano prodigy Alicia across the years from the discovery of her talent, aged three, to her participation in the Leeds International Piano Competition when, on the cusp of adulthood, she must face harsh truths about herself, her guidance and her gift. Author Jessica Duchen and pianist Peter Donohoe alternate extracts from the book with illustrative works by Chopin, Ravel and Granados, among others. Tickets: 10 8
Tuesday 28th July Letterston Memorial Hall Roby Lakatos Ensemble 8pm SA62 5RY The flamboyant Hungarian wizard first played in his father s gypsy band when he was nine, and later became a star at the Liszt Academy in Budapest. Equally comfortable performing classical music as he is playing jazz, Lakatos is a rare musician who defies definition. A gypsy violinist or devil s fiddler? A classical virtuoso? A jazz improviser? He is all these and more. when Roby Lakatos spun out his first cadenza, the earth stood still. His band are gypsies like him, and each can carry an evening. Lakatos left us with birdsong in our ears. The Independent Tickets: 15 Wednesday 29th July 3pm Theatr Gwaun, Fishguard SA65 9AD Family Concert with Project Jam Sandwich Project Jam Sandwich are as wacky as their name suggests! The five piece band of award-winning musicians bring together musical flavours from across the world before sandwiching them together with some funk grooves, afrobeats and celtic reels. And there you have it: vibrant, foot tapping fun for all the family. Tickets: 8 Under 16s 1 Wednesday 29th July St Peter s Church, Goodwick SA64 0EH Winning Professionals Rupert Browne French horn Steffan Ciccotti percussion Anne Denholm harp Trystan Llyr Griffiths tenor Jessica Robinson soprano Matthew Williams trumpet David Doidge piano Bringing together winners of the prestigious Arts Council of Wales Advanced Study Music Scholarships for this concert has been a real pleasure. These outstanding young musicians will perform classical favourites alongside music by Welsh composers Grace Williams, Dilys Elwyn Edwards, and Joseph Parry. The concert also includes premieres of two new works by Geraint Lewis and another scholarship recipient, Gareth Moorcraft. Tickets: 10 9

The opening recital sees each of them exploring works from what is often referred to as the New Testament of music, Beethoven s 32 piano sonatas, each so different, but together offering a diary of the composer s musical life. They come together to embark on a journey through the piano world, culminating in one of the defining works of all time: Stravinsky s Rite of Spring, performed in its original version, is, in the minds of many, even more arresting than the orchestral version which came later. Tickets: 15; 18 (both concerts) Concert Supper Bookings available on Festival Bus to Rhosygilwen (for those attending both concerts): 4 (Picking up at Goodwick, Fishguard, Dinas Cross, Newport & Cardigan) 10
