1 MUSIC EVENTS AT BOWDOIN COLLEGE Spring 2011 Boston Modern Orchestra Project Friday, January 28 at 7:30 PM The Boston Modern Orchestra Project, under the direction of Gil Rose, will present a program entitled the Monsters of Modernism. Lucía Pulido Saturday, February 19 at 7:30 PM Lucía Pulido is a Colombian singer with one of the richest voices on the international Latin American musical scene today. Lucía's musical compass has been an experimental approach to traditional Colombian rhythms and songs; cumbia and bullerengue from the Atlantic Coast, currulaos from the Pacific Coast as well as joropos from the Colombian Eastern Plains are the point of departure for her musical creativity. The New York times says that Ms. Pulido holds on to the rawness of the original melodies while giving them a sophisticated new context. Her New York based trio performs experimental arrangements of Colombian traditional music as well as newlycomposed songs. The Steve Grover New York Quartet Friday, February 25 at 7:30 PM

2 The Steve Grover New York Quartet is comprised of Maine drummer and composer (and Bowdoin faculty member) Steve Grover, along with his New York friends Andrew Rathbun, saxophones; Frank Carlberg, piano; and Chris Van Voorst Van Beest, bass. The SGNYQ will be premiering new original music by Grover, as well as performing a few arrangements of standards and jazz tunes. Teatime Concert: Christian Delafontaine, flute & George Lopez, piano Friday, March 4 at 4:00 PM The concert will feature the modern-day premiere of newly-discovered works by Muzio Clementi: his arrangements of Pleyel string quartets. USM Chamber Singers and Bowdoin Chamber Choir Robert Russell and Robert K. Greenlee, directors Sunday, March 6 at 3:00 PM Bowdoin Chapel St. Mary Schola Requiem Wednesday, April 6 at 7:30 PM Bowdoin Chapel The St Mary Schola, an early music ensemble of fourteen under the direction of Bruce Fithian, will present a Lenten concert of remembrance entitled Requiem. This concert honors the life of the Reverend Canon James Dalton-Thompson, a founding board member of the group, and features works of sublime beauty, especially Victoria s Missa Pro Defunctis, a work noted for its passion and lush harmonies. Another rarely heard master work of the Renaissance, Thomas Tallis Lamentations of Jeremiah will be presented, as well as Jean Gilles beguiling Introit from his own Requiem, and two duets from Pergolesi s Stabat Mater, accompanied by string trio, organ and harpsichord. The Alamire concert originally scheduled for this time has been canceled.

3 Capillary Action Wednesday, April 6 at 7:30 PM Equal parts samba school density and Beefheartian primitivism; pure pop bliss and chamber ensemble precision, Capillary Action are an American musical ensemble that cannibalize a wide variety of sources to synthesize a cubist, confrontational take on classic pop forms. Led by composer/singer/guitarist Jonathan Pfeffer, Capillary Action s music is typified by its frenetic pace, dense harmonies, broad dynamics, elastic rhythmic interplay, and confessional tone. George Lopez, piano and the Esterhazy Quartet Friday, April 8 at 7:30 PM Eva Szekely, violin; Susan Jensen, violin; Leslie Perna, viola; and Darry Dolezal, cello will join Artist-in-Residence George Lopez to perform works including the Schumann Piano Quintet, Andrew List s String Quartet No. 4, a premiere of his From the Temple of Dendera Twelve Etudes for Piano Inspired by The Egyptian Zodiac. Prof. James Higginbotham will give a preconcert lecture at 6:45 PM on the Egyptian Zodiac and Temple of Dendera. Wabanaki Arts Festival Saturday, April 16, 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM Morrell Gym

4 This daylong celebration of Wabanaki arts and culture will include two drum groups performing throughout the day and twenty-five basket-makers and other artisans with items for sale. Bowdoin College Concert Band John P. Morneau, director Sunday, April 17 at 2:00 PM Boston Modern Orchestra Project Sunday, April 17 at 7:00 PM The Boston Modern Orchestra Project, under the direction of Gil Rose, will present a program including works by Michael Gordon, David Lang and Julia Wolfe. An Evening of Dance Wednesday and Thursday, April 27 and 28 at 8:00 PM Pickard Theater, Memorial Hall An Independent Study in Dance featuring choreography by Kathryn Savasuk 11 and Rakiya Orange 11. The pieces will blend Kathryn s modern ballet training and Rakiya s percussive, post-modern full body movement. The project will involve music by Sam Waterbury 11 and video by Houston Kraft 11.
