CRAZY FOR YOU BIOGRAPHIES - PRODUCTION TEAM Gary Oxenham Director Well this is a first! No, really, it actually is! This is Gary s first biography as a Director of a full musical show. He is delighted to have been given the opportunity to take the reins as the Director for Cody Musical Theatre. In fact, there is a lovely symmetry here because the first show both Gary and the Choreographer Lisa were in at Cody was Crazy for You back in 1999 as singers and dancers. Now here they are 17 years later both in charge! Gary had some previous leadership roles including Assistant Director for Sweet Charity, over the years has choreographed a Youth Dance Troupe and been a Band Master of a marching band that won Best Newcomers in a West of England band competition! Gary has performed in nearly 100 shows since the age of 9 on the amateur stage all over the country. He would like to thank the MD Graham and Choreographer Lisa, along with his sterling assistant Sophie and the rest of the Production Team, for all their help along the way. And of course the show would be nothing without the wonderful cast and superb principals. They have made this journey for him an absolute joy! Graham Hix Musical Director Graham s leaning towards music started when his parents found him pretending to play the piano on the table in front of the radio set, aged six. Piano lessons quickly followed which finally led to a career in sound engineering at the BBC and London Weekend TV / ITV. Piano playing lay almost dormant for 20 years, during which time Graham built his career specialising in light entertainment music mixing, working with everyone from Bette Midler and Sammy Davis to Carl Davis and Leonard Bernstein - not forgetting the late Cilla Black, Bruce Forsyth and Dame Edna (Barry Humphries) for which he received a BAFTA nomination. In 1986, he flexed the fingers again and has now spent 30 years being Musical Director, arranger and keyboardist for many local music groups with Crazy for You being his 8th show as MD for Cody. Graham hopes you will sit back and enjoy all the wonderful Gershwin melodies performed by a fabulous cast and orchestra. Sophie Fryer Assistant Director Sophie started dancing at the age of 3 and her first stage appearance was as a butterfly. She joined amateur dramatics at the age of 13 acting in plays and then turned to musical stage when she joined the Harrow Light Opera Company at the age of 16 as a dancer. She progressed to singing and principle parts thereafter, including Nancy in Oliver!. Sophie joined Cody in 1991 and has played many character roles. She has been performing the role of Assistant Director for many years and now prefers this side of the lights. She is also kept busy with being Chairman of this Company as well as running her own millinery business. Lisa Fletcher Choreographer With both parents in the professional theatre business, it is no surprise that Lisa took to the stage at an early age. Growing up in Glasgow, she studied ballet and sang in the school and church choirs. At 16, she joined her first musical society and has had a passion for musical theatre ever since. Lisa spent many years moving around with the armed services, where she took part in, and directed, various stage productions ranging from drama to panto. She joined Cody Musical Theatre Company 17 years ago as a dancer in Crazy for You. How appropriate that her first show as Choreographer is for the very same show. Lisa has found it challenging, rewarding, fun and hopes that audiences will enjoy the show as much as she has enjoyed helping to create it. She would like to thank her grandson, Arran, for helping his Nonna try out the dances at home! The family are eagerly awaiting the arrival of his little sister any day now. Exciting times. Mike Davall Stage Manager Crazy for You is the first repeat show during Mike s tenure as Stage Manager. The first production was 17 years ago in It is a fun show with lots of good songs and music as well as a very versatile set which will keep Mike and his Crew busy during the run. Mike is still busy with local shows. He helps out with CAMUS Productions as part of the Stage Crew team and last year was co-ersed into doing sound for his Golf Club Winter Show, which was great fun as it was something different. It also gave Mike the opportunity to help the members taking part especially as some of them had never sung or performed before. Richard Bradford Sound Director Richard has spent over forty years working on sound in television, providing both the broadcast sound on shows as well as sound systems for audiences. Much of this work has been carried out in television studios, but he has also been involved with productions staged in various West End theatres, the Hammersmith Apollo and the Royal Albert Hall. He worked with Russell Watson and Lionel Richie on stage shows in Amsterdam, and was pleased to receive a nomination for a British Academy Award in recognition of his work on an oratorio for ITV. He is looking forward to being involved with Crazy for You.

CODY MUSICAL THEATRE COMPANY BIOGRAPHIES - CAST Rob Tickner Bobby Child Rob joined Cody in 2005 as Cosmo in Singin in the Rain which was an energetic part full of singing and tap dancing. This is the first show since Singin in the Rain that Rob has truly had to put his tap shoes back on which is a daunting prospect without any tap training. Rob hopes he can put his tapping frustrations aside and perform a tip tap performance. Kelly Gates - Polly Baker Kelly is delighted to be given the opportunity to perform the role of Polly, which is completely different character compared to her previous two principal roles with Cody as Helene in Sweet Charity and Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar. Kelly studied Music, Dance and Drama from a young age and performed in various roles during school. She then went on to College in York to study Theatre, Film, Television and Radio. Following that Kelly attended the Guildford Academy of Contemporary Music where she gained a diploma in Vocals. Prior to settling down and having a family, Kelly also performed in a number of function bands and was part of the Girl Group Sasski for several years. She would like to take this opportunity to thank her family for all their support, especially her husband Stuart, for agreeing to run around after their four young children during rehearsals and show week, yet again! Nigel Morley - Bela Zangler Nigel has loved being in another show with Cody at The Princes Hall. He has previously appeared with them in Behind the Bike Sheds and, as Max Bialystock, in The Producers. Roles with the Farnham Amateur Operatic Society include Jack Point in The Yeomen of the Guard, through Horace Vandergelder in Hello Dolly! and Nicely-Nicely Johnson in Guys and Dolls, to Major General Stanley in The Pirates of Penzance. In real life Nigel is sober! Emily Gregory - Irene Roth Emily has loved musical theatre for as long as she can remember but her passion for performing took a bit of a backseat when she had her son Flynn nearly two years ago. Now in her second show for Cody, she can t imagine her life without it! As a member of the Big Little Theatre Company in her teens, Emily performed multiple shows at the Bournemouth Pavilion Theatre and the Regent Centre Christchurch. She has been fortunate enough to play the lead roles of Hope Harcourt in Anything Goes, Mari Hoff in The Rise and Fall of Little Voice and Eponine in Les Misérables a show which will forever hold a place deep in her heart. Emily has thoroughly enjoyed stepping into the shoes of Irene Roth and would like to thank her husband Jonny for being so supportive while she s been off being a Naughty Baby at rehearsals. When she s not looking after Flynn, Emily is busy running her own newborn, baby and family photography business, Baby Love Photography. Tony Siddall Lank Hawkins Tony is looking forward to running the saloon as the rather manic and impatient Lank. Other recent roles have included The Captain Anything Goes, Pat Denning 42nd Street, Lt Brannigan in Guys and Dolls, Willy in Copacabana, The Kralahome in The King and I, Brian and the Irish Police Sergeant in The Producers, Mr Sowerberry in Oliver!, Franz in The Sound of Music, and Underling in The Drowsy Chaperone. This is Tony s fourteenth show with CMTC prior to which, for many years, he appeared in productions by the NatWest (now RBS) Theatre Company in London.

CRAZY FOR YOU BIOGRAPHIES - CAST Giga Phillips - Mother (Lottie Child) Giga last played Lottie in the 1999 production and the role hasn t changed! Lottie is still a hard business woman whose son frustrates her expectations of him becoming a great banker and following in the family footsteps. I guess all mothers know how I feel! Last year, Giga appeared as Mrs Harcourt in Anything Goes (Cody Musical Theatre Company), Mrs Candour in School for Scandal by Sheridan (CCP) and in Don t Stop the Music (CMTC), whilst overseeing her house being rebuilt. Hopefully 2016 will be an easier year! Haydn Thomas - Everett Baker With his wife June, Haydn joined the Company in 1960 and has performed onstage in 90 of our productions, as chorus member, dancer and as a principal in well over 60 roles, of which his favourites include King Arthur in Camelot, the King in The King and I and Professor Higgins in My Fair Lady. In this show, he is reprising his earlier role of Everett- a Befuddled old timer (not art imitating life, he hopes). Backstage, from time to time, he has acted as prompt and member of stagecrew, make-up and props-making teams. Our Business Manager for 19 years, Costume Manager for 12 years and Chairman for 16 years, he has been awarded Life Membership of the Society and also the 50 Year Service Award of The National Operatic and Dramatic Association. Charlie Magowan - Eugenie Fodor Charlie last performed in Crazy for You with FAOS at the Farnham Maltings, and she had such a hoot as the ever chirpy English traveller, Patricia, she decided to have another go. This time she is really excited to be the other half of the Fodor double act, Eugenie. A regular performer with Cody and other local societies and singing groups, she has enjoyed a diversity of principal comedy roles. These have ranged from Ruth in Pirates of Penzance, Mrs Bates in Behind the Bike Sheds and Widow Corney in Oliver! to a larger than life and eye-opening Talking Tree in Wizard of Oz and Singing Sausage with Palace of Varieties. When not enjoying life in the Wild West in Crazy for You, she plays a key role in the conservation of wildlife with Surrey Wildlife Trust. Janey Blaszkowicz - Patricia Fodor Janey joined Cody Musical Theatre Company for the last fantastic show Don t Stop the Music and is now thrilled to be performing as Patricia Fodor - her acting debut! Janey studied for a popular music degree at Sheffield University, majoring in voice. Whilst studying for her degree, she was lead singer of many function bands and a regular feature in the performing circuit. It wasn t long after Janey started her teaching career that she went back to study, herself, by completing her vocal diploma in music theatre. She also studied ballet, ballroom and Latin dancing from a young age and competed across the country. Janey lives locally with her husband and two young children. Danni Stembridge - Tess This show is Danni s 12th show with the Company. She first donned her tap shoes in 2005 as the high-kicking Diane Lorimer in 42nd Street and a few shows later, played her first principal role as Josephine in HMS Pinafore. Since then, she has visited a few other societies appearing as Christine in Phantom, Maria in West Side Story and Sarah Brown in Guys and Dolls, as well as returning home to Cody as Tuptim in The King and I, Philia in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Mabel in The Pirates of Penzance and dusting off her tap shoes once again to play Reno Sweeney in last year s Anything Goes. A life-long lover of musical theatre, Danni has turned her passion into a rewarding career as a drama school voice and singing teacher. Sue Canfield - Patsy Crazy for You was Sue s first show with the Company in 1999 and she is delighted to be doing it again, this time playing such a fun character! For someone for whom dancing is her first love, and with Gershwin as the song writer, there are few better shows to do, and rehearsals have been really enjoyable. Sue is more often found on the production team as Choreographer, most recently for Anything Goes in 2015, but is really enjoying being on stage this time.

CODY MUSICAL THEATRE COMPANY SHOW HISTORY Crazy for You, billed as the new Gershwin Musical Comedy, with a book by Ken Ludwig, opened on February 19th, 1992, at the Shubert Theater in New York City. It ran for 1,622 performances. Directed by Mike Ockrent and choreographed by Susan Stroman, it featured Harry Groener as Bobby Child, Jodi Benson (of Disney s The Little Mermaid fame) as Polly Baker, and Bruce Adler as Bela Zangler. The show garnered a Tony Award for Outstanding Musical, as well as Tony Awards for Best Choreography (Susan Stroman) and Best Costume Design (William Ivey Long.) The show opened on the West End at the Prince Edward Theatre on March 3rd, 1993, and ran for almost three years. This cast included Kirby Ward as Bobby Child, Ruthie Henshall as Polly Baker, and Chris Langham as Bela Zangler. Crazy for You is based loosely on the 1930 Gershwin musical Girl Crazy, which featured a boy from the East travelling to a ranch in the West, and helped to launch the careers of Ethel Merman and Ginger Rogers, and has been made into a movie three times, most notably starring Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland in Playwright Ken Ludwig was originally approached by the producers of Crazy for You, who had acquired the rights to the songs of the Gershwins, to adapt Girl Crazy, but Ludwig found the storyline to be weak and the script to be full of offensive stereotypes. He got permission to write a whole new musical, keeping the East goes West theme of Girl Crazy and building a tightly plotted, old-fashioned musical comedy which celebrates the fresh exuberance of the 1930s, when the songs were new. Ludwig included plenty of farcical mistaken identities, loving references to the kind of optimistic, youthful, high-energy shows for which Garland and Rooney (though popular in the 1940s, the tone was correct) were famous ( let s put on a show in the old barn, and save. ), and the kind of tap duets and dream productions which were the hallmark of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. He also included character homages to famous 1930 s personalities, including Florenz Ziegfeld, the Broadway impresario, and Eugene Fodor, author of popular travel guidebooks. Ludwig incorporated many George and Ira Gershwin tunes, from a variety of musicals, both staged and filmed. Besides Girl Crazy, a complete list of other shows includes: Treasure Girl, A Damsel in Distress, Oh, Kay, Shall We Dance, and Ladies First. In his review in The New York Times, Frank Rich wrote, When future historians try to find the exact moment at which Broadway finally rose up to grab the musical back from the British, they just may conclude that the revolution began last night. The shot was fired at the Shubert Theater, where a riotously entertaining show called Crazy for You uncorked the American musical s classic blend of music, laughter, dancing, sentiment and showmanship with a freshness and confidence rarely seen during the Cats decade... Crazy for You scrapes away decades of cabaret and jazz and variety-show interpretations to reclaim the Gershwins standards, in all their glorious youth, for the dynamism of the stage.

CRAZY FOR YOU STORY ACT 1 Backstage at the Zangler Theatre in New York in the 1930s, the last performance of the Zangler Follies is wrapping up for the season and Tess, the Dance Director, is dodging the advances of the married Bela Zangler. Bobby Child, the rich son of a banking family, is backstage hoping for an audition with Mr. Zangler. Bobby performs K-ra-zy for You, but fails to impress Zangler. Outside, Bobby is met by Irene, the wealthy woman to whom he has been engaged for five years, and then by his mother who demands that Bobby carry out a piece of banking business for her. Bobby is told to go to Deadrock, Nevada, to foreclose on a rundown theatre. As the women argue over him, Bobby imagines himself dancing with the Follies Girls and joins them in a rousing rendition of I Can t Be Bothered Now. Brought back to reality, Bobby decides to escape to Nevada. When Bobby arrives in Deadrock, it is clear that the gold-mining town has seen better days. The men, who are cowboys, sing Bidin My Time in a long, slow drawl. Everett Baker receives a letter from New York warning of Bobby coming to foreclose on his Gaiety Theatre, his daughter Polly, vows to get even with Bobby Child if she ever meets him. Lank Hawkins, proprietor of the town s saloon, argues with Everett, trying to convince Everett to let him buy the theatre before the bank takes it, but the stubborn old man refuses. Bobby falls in love with Polly at first sight, not realising who she is, and expresses his excitement in Things Are Looking Up. Lank isn t pleased to see a rival for Polly s affections. Bobby finds himself in quite a bind. If he forecloses on the theatre he will lose the girl of his dreams, so he comes up with the idea of putting on a show to pay off the mortgage. Polly agrees to this plan until she finds out who he is. Bobby decides to put on the show anyway, but disguised as Mr. Zangler. Polly, deeply hurt, expressed her loneliness in Someone to Watch Over Me. Ten Follies Girls on vacation from The Zangler Follies appear in town to help Bobby stage a spectacular show in Deadrock. When the men of Deadrock see the girls, the sleepy town becomes very lively and they agree to take part in the show. Rehearsals aren t going well, but Bobby changes all that in the song Slap That Bass. Meanwhile, to Bobby s dismay, Irene arrives, threatening to expose Bobby s charade, and Polly has fallen in love with Bobby s impersonation of Zangler. She expresses her love for Zangler with the song Embraceable You. Opening night arrives, with everyone in high hopes Tonight s the Night!. Sadly, everyone is disappointed to find that the only people to arrive are Eugene and Patricia Fodor, British tourists writing a guidebook on the American West. Bobby, still disguised, apologises for letting everyone down. Polly forgives him, saying he has brought a new spirit to their lives. As the townsfolk celebrate with I Got Rhythm the real Bela Zangler stumbles into the scene unnoticed and faints. ACT 2 Bobby discards his disguise to show Polly that he is the man she loves, but the real Bela enters looking for Tess. Polly greets him with a kiss, as a despairing Bobby heads upstairs with a bottle of liquor. Zangler finds Tess, but refuses her request to produce the show. After Polly leaves, Bobby returns, falling down drunk and once again dressed as Bela. There are now two Belas in the room, each too drunk to realize the other is there. The two men act as mirror images of each other, and lament their lost loves in What Causes That. The next morning, Polly sees the two Zanglers and realizes what has happened. She slaps Bobby and leaves in a huff, while the townsfolk prepare for a meeting at the theatre to discuss what to do with the show. Irene comes to Bobby to make him go back to New York with her, but Bobby rejects her and states his love for Polly. Immensely frustrated, Irene seduces Lank in Naughty Baby. The townsfolk are all now gathered at the theatre. Bobby is all for trying the show again, while Polly thinks they should abandon the venture. The Fodors counsel the dejected townspeople to keep a Stiff Upper Lip, but by the end of the song, only Polly, Everett, Bobby, and Tess still think the show should continue. Bobby prepares to leave for New York, professing that his memories of Polly will never fade in They Can t Take That Away from Me. Polly realises, too late, that she does love Bobby, and laments her loss in But Not For Me. Meanwhile, Bela Zangler decides to put on the show as a favour to Tess. Six weeks later for Bobby s birthday, Mrs. Child gives him the Zangler theatre (Zangler has used all his money on the show in Deadrock). Bobby realises that his love for Polly is worth more in Nice Work if You Can Get It, and leaves for Deadrock with Mrs. Child. Meanwhile, Polly has decided to leave for New York to look for Bobby, who enters Deadrock just after she leaves. After learning that Polly has left to find him, he goes to wash up before driving back to New York to catch her. Everett notices Mrs. Child, and falls head-over-heels in love with her. His affections are reciprocated, and immediately afterwards, Polly re-enters with Custus, who was trying to give Polly a ride to the station, but the car has run out of gas and she missed the train to New York. Together the townspeople concoct a plan to reunite them.

CODY MUSICAL THEATRE COMPANY OUR COMPANY HISTORY Cody Musical Theatre Company, formerly known as Cody Farnborough Amateur Operatic Society, is a charitable organisation, which has raised since 1939 over 60,000 for local charitable organisations. Formed in 1920 and having a Dramatic Section, the Society became first known as the Royal Aircraft Establishment Dramatic and Operatic Society. The first musical production, performed in 1921, was a Chinese operetta The Golden Amulet. It was performed in the old RAE Concert Hall on the site of the present QinetiQ (formerly DERA) Assembly Hall in Farnborough. In 1929 the Society was granted the use of the Farnborough Town Hall which continued until 1940 when the Town Hall was taken over completely as a Civil Defence Centre. During this period the association with the town of Farnborough grew to the extent that in 1935 the Society was reconstituted as the Farnborough and Royal Aircraft Establishment Amateur Operatic Society. Although the Society was grateful to have a home, the Town Hall had its disadvantages; there was no way to cross backstage from one side to the other and no changing rooms for the gentlemen, who had to make do with a marquee erected behind the hall. This worked reasonably well except for the winter of 1932 when due to a heavy fall of snow the roof of the marquee collapsed. In 1940 the Society moved to perform at the Theatre Royal, Aldershot, playing to packed houses every night. During the very first production ( The Mikado ) the Air Raid Warning sounded and Pooh-Bah kneeling before the Mikado said Your Majesty, I have to announce that the sirens have just gone off. The audience responded with one of the most prolonged rounds of applause the Society has ever received. Needless to say the show went on! The new RAE Assembly Hall became available in 1944 and the Society returned to its original home again until the year 1973 when the Princes Hall opened in Aldershot. The first show put on at the Princes Hall was Fiddler on the Roof followed by a large number of equally successful and ambitious productions, demonstrating that the Society was in the front rank of amateur companies. The Society s achievements broadened further with critically acclaimed operas such as Jesus Christ Superstar (the Society being the only amateur company allowed to present the show in 1995, prior to its subsequent revival in the West End) and have been awarded many regional accolades of excellence by NODA (National Operatic and Dramatic Association), the most recent being for the 2014 production of The Producers. In 2001 the Members decided that it would be appropriate to change the Society s name to Cody Farnborough Amateur Operatic Society in order to reflect its continued links with its historical home. The members then decided in 2015 to change the name to Cody Musical Theatre Company to move with the modern times. Members who have received NODA Long Service Awards and Medals in the last 5 years: 60 Year Diamond Bar June Thomas 55 Year Gilt Stud Haydn Thomas 45 Year Silver Bar Mike Davall 40 Year Silver Bar Joyce Atlee Sue Sampson 35 Year Silver Bar Tony Doherty Jim Prescott 30 Year Silver Bar Christine White Tim Canfield Giga Phillips 25 Year Silver Medal Huw Prall Eric McLoughlin Martin Sampson Sian Tickner Mike Lehman Lynda Taylor Gary Oxenham Sophie Fryer Males who can Sing and Dance to be in Cody s next show A Chorus Line Performing at The Princes Hall Theatre, Aldershot from 28th September to 1st October 2016 with weekly evening rehearsals Tuesdays & Thursdays at Velmead School, Fleet.
