3 The Chicago Symphony Orchestra An OLLI at WMU Concert Experience Friday, April 20, 2018 Travel to the Windy City with hosts Barry Ross and Jane Rooks Ross for a magnificent Chicago Symphony Orchestra concert. On this one-day Chicago bus trip, we begin with a stop at the fantastic food emporium Eataly! While there, we are free to explore, taste, shop and enjoy lunch on our own before we set off to hear the CSO in concert. The masterful maestro Riccardo Muti conducts the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in a program with music by romantic genius Tchaikovsky and the ethereal sounds of Debussy featuring the CSO harp soloist Sarah Bullen. This program of vivid orchestral colors will be a delight to explore and hear live! The day will close with a relaxing dinner (included) at Tosi s where we will have the opportunity to savor our day of musical treasures. But wait, this is not only a concert. Enjoy a new opportunity! Your trip registration also includes attendance at a pre-trip, concert orientation hosted by Barry and Jane. The experience of the pre-trip orientation allows us to fully explore this musical program. Our orientation is scheduled for Monday, April 16, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Walden Woods. Save the date! Barry and Jane are very excited to offer OLLI at WMU travelers this unique musical program. Dr. Barry Ross is the former assistant conductor of the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra and Professor Emeritus of music at Kalamazoo College, where he founded the Kalamazoo College and Community Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra. He has performed solo and as a chamber violinist as well as conductor throughout the Midwest. For 32 years he was concertmaster of the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra and from served as KSO s assistant conductor. An active performer, Barry Ross can be heard regularly performing jazz and classical music. Jane Rooks Ross is the founding director of education for the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra and, most recently, established Marvelous Music! A lifelong educator, she has taught in the WMU Honors College, KVCC, Kalamazoo College and area schools. Ms. Rooks Ross holds a M.M. in music education cum laude from WMU. Due to the limited number of tickets, registration opens Dec. 20, 2017 and will close Feb. 10. Don t miss this one of a kind musical experience. 4 Opening Night at the Opera Friday, May 4, 2018 This year we will join the excitement of opening night as Opera Grand Rapids presents one of Mozart s best-known operas, The Marriage of Figaro. With this production OGR is paying homage to its 50th anniversary by restaging the first opera from its first season. With beautiful music and a story that borders on the manic, Mozart tells a tale of love, betrayal and some other devious plots, but all is happily resolved when, in the end, love conquers all. Dinner before the opera is at the popular Bistro Bella Vita. All in all, an evening to remember. Registration opens Jan. 8, 2018 Walking Level: Easy Members $107, Non-members $122 Register by 4/4/18 Exploring Amish Acres: A Visit Back in Time Thursday, May 10, 2018 Amish Acres in Nappanee, Indiana is an 80-acre restored Old Order Amish farm. Surrounded by pastoral beauty, we will experience farm wagon rides, farm and house tours as well as informative documentaries about Amish life. Our visit features the nationally famous Threshers meal, a family style feast of Amish country favorites. The afternoon includes some time to browse through local shops before enjoying the Best of Broadway s Golden Age of Musical Theatre. We will see the musical comedy The Rat Pak Lounge performed in the 1911 Round Barn Theatre. This show features the music of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. In a nutshell, it revolves around a group of 1950s musicians killed before their time who return to earth. You will have to see it to find out who steals the show from the boys! Amish Acres has been featured as a must see Midwest attraction and is Indiana s number one tourist destination. Don t sit back! Rush and sign up for this fun excursion as it is certain to fill fast. We expect to return home at approximately 6 p.m. Registration opens Jan. 8, Walking Level: Easy Members $132, Non-members $147 Register by 4/10/18
5 Ann Arbor Treasures and Surprises Tuesday, June 5, 2018 OLLI at WMU is excited to offer our travelers a trip to two special Ann Arbor jewels. No need to worry about parking or parking tickets just leave the driving to us! We will be exploring the University of Michigan Museum of Art and a food emporium like no other better known as Zingerman s Deli. There is more to Ann Arbor than a game at the Big House. UMMA has extensive collections spanning many different cultures, eras and media. It has been described as one of the finest museums of its size anywhere in the country. Our docent will guide us through the African and Asian art collections leaving us time to explore other parts of the museum on our own. Zingerman s is an Ann Arbor institution and, as their website explains, a 30-year experiment in creating a living culinary laboratory. This is hereby translated as good food and interesting educational opportunities for all visitors. We will tour the deli to get the scoop on what makes this one of Ann Arbor s best eating choices and end with lunch. Note: Your lunch must be pre-selected. You will be given the menu choices when you register with Stephanie at AAA. Zingerman s requires that all lunch orders be submitted in advance to ensure quick and accurate service the day of the trip. Registration opens Jan. 8, 2018 Walking Level: Moderate Members $108, Non-members $123 Register by 5/4/18 67
6 Jackson: From Art to History to Automobiles! Tuesday, June 19, 2018 Join OLLI at WMU Travel as we begin our exploration of Jackson County. Our first stop brings us to the Ella Sharp Museum and Park. Ella Merriman Sharp was a civicminded, Jackson resident who was generous both during her life and after her death. Sharp died Nov. 9, 1912, at the early age of 55 from kidney failure. She left her estate to the city of Jackson to provide a public park along with a welcoming place for everyone to explore and enjoy history and the arts. We will enjoy a docent tour of her elegantly furnished Victorian home along with the associated historic buildings. The star attraction however, is the Ella Sharp Museum. A docent will guide us through the galleries housing both permanent and rotating exhibits. Special exhibits for the 2018 season include watercolors by Joyce Grace, along with exhibits of printmaking and fiber art. Permanent exhibits include the Jackson History gallery, Andrews Gallery of Wildlife Art and the Never Enough Time gallery featuring clocks of all sizes, shapes and history. The trip continues with a short drive to Ye Ole Carriage Shop in Spring Arbor. In the early years of the auto industry, Jackson was the largest manufacturer of automobiles in the Midwest! There were 24 companies building cars in Jackson and at one time it was the largest employer in Jackson. In 1974, Lloyd Ganton who has had a life-long love of cars, opened Ye Ole Carriage Shop and secured 18 examples of the 24 types of autos made in Jackson. The museum also features many other classic and historical cars and seven additional rooms housing dozens of impressive collections. You will find Coca-Cola memorabilia, motorcycles, model airplanes and much more! Lloyd himself will provide a tour and the stories behind the unique models. Registration opens Jan. 8, 2018 Walking Level: Moderate Members $93, Non-members $108 Register by 5/18/18 68
