PARADE 2018 Does a spider in the bath make you squirm? Does a wasp in your hair send you running? If so, then, this year s Spraoi Parade, BUGS, might drive you to distraction. Spraoi look under the magnifying glass and take inspiration from swarms, colonies, webs and hives. Be prepared for our collection of BUGS to hit the streets. Watch them fly, scurry, jump and crawl as Spraoi unleash all manner of creepy crawly creatures. Once more, Spraoi bring together a multitude of fantastical, gigantic constructions, musicians, dancers and performers to the streets and quays of Waterford City. Come see this magical spectacle if you dare! The Spraoi Parade is now a landmark cultural event, one of the largest outdoor arts events in Ireland. It s mesmerising, astonishing, exciting, a feast for all the senses. Join us on Sunday evening for an unforgettable experience.

Beginning at Johnstown, the parade will progress via John s Street, Michael Street, Broad Street, John Roberts Square and Barronstrand Street, and finish on the Quay. Traffic diversions and restrictions will occur as the parade moves along the route. See our website for details. There will be absolutely no parking along the parade route. A special cordoned-off viewing area for those with special needs will be on the roundabout beside the G.P.O. There are fixed ambulance points along the route, which our stewards will guide you towards if required. Very special thanks to the team at Clem Jacob Hire. Spraoi is very proud to be associated with this true Waterford Company that has provided the festival with 24/7 technical support and friendship as we serve Waterford together. 6 Street Theatre Circo Eia: intarsi (Catalonia) Irish Premiere A few smallish platforms, a trampoline, a teeterboard and four men. Four acrobats watch each other, gauge, run into, carry, throw each other and sweep us along in their physical and metaphorical dance: meetings, exploits, mistakes, power games, seductions, manipulations, a mosaic made up of fragments of life, a glimpse into the kaleidoscope of human relationships. This is a stunning 60 minute show by one of Europe s leading street theatre companies. Not to be missed! Performers: Armando Rabanera Muro, Fabio Nicolini, Fabrizio Giannini, Eduardo Lucas Muñoz de Lucas Performing: Fri & Sat: The Mall 9.30pm Compania Hotel Iocandi: Esquerdes (The Balearic Islands) Irish Premiere What is in the empty space between two pieces that do not fit? A man and a woman meet in a place. He climbs. She runs. Just a simple movement and the game can start. Esquerdes is a show that combines static trapeze, acrobatic ladder and live music through three moving bodies, in a game between the desire and the escape. Idea and creation: Hotel Iocandi Interpreters: Tomeu Amer, Griselda Juncà and Joana Gomila Performing: Sat & Sun: The Mall

Circ Panic: MiraT (Catalonia) Irish Premiere A giant set of scales stands in the centre of the stage. MiraT plays with an exchange of perspectives, both introspective and open. Observing oneself, confronted with one s own sense of loneliness, making the decision to embark on a journey of self discovery, and transcribing this onto the stage. MiraT is an invitation to observe oneself without complacency or arrogance, but with humour and self-derision, in constant pursuit of stability and balance; swinging, spinning and dancing. Concept, Production and Interpretation: Jordi Panareda / Circ Pànic Performing: Sat & Sun: The Mall The Primitives: Three of a Kind (Belgium/Germany) Irish Premiere The appearance of 3 middle aged men in suits and ties evokes many images and emotions. They are clearly lost, struggling to work out where they are going and what they are supposed to do. Out of habit and for safety s sake, they move in chorus, almost like a herd of animals, helping each other as they stumble and fall, grooming and caring for each other. With time, the obsessive drive to carry on gradually gives way to a sense of exhaustion and desperation. Fractures appear in the cohesion of the group, creating instability and doubt. Unable to carry on, the trio splits. The need to break free, to escape the claustrophobia of the group, leads to scenes of antagonism, confrontation, and rebellion. From conformity and cooperation to individualism and chaos. Will they find a way out? Performed by: Craig Weston, Gordon Wilson and Markus Siebert Performing: Fri: Hanover St., Sat & Sun: The Mall

Two acrobats create a world between the harmonious and the absurd. In this world, lines are blurred between human and nature. An acrobatic and poetic reflection of the balance between the organic, the structured and the human. Acrobatic duo Ali Stanger and Henrik Gard have gone through countless hours of attempts, failures and achievements to create a mutual acrobatic language of finesse and honesty. A fun, thoughtful and humorous display of rich imagery and dynamic riveting movement. Performed by: Ali Stanger and Henrik Gard Performing: Fri, Sat & Sun: Gladstone St CirQ: Le Grand Café (Belgium) Irish Premiere The smallest bar in the world (and the nicest). Usually sitting at a cafe on your own is rather depressing. But if there is only one bar stool, then it feels like a privilege. The smallest bar in the world is just 1 square meter, but is just as an authentic Flemish café should be, with a counter, bird s peak, a little pot and you can still smoke inside! The largest number of customers that Stefaan, the barman, ever served at the same time was a bunch of 9 crazy Spaniards who wrenched themselves in. Who can do better? Performers : Bert De Jonghe and Stefaan De Winter Performing: Sat & Sun: The Mall Ali & Henrik: Cikada (Ireland & UK) Avanti Display: Full Circle (UK) Irish Premiere Are they incompetent council workers or is it a piece of performance art? What began as a game is now starting to look a bit precarious. Where have they gone? Now what do we do? What starts as a slow and intriguing performance, builds gently through to suspense, hilarity and unforeseeable consequences. Just how many buckets do they need? Now it s starting to look a bit precarious. That s a lot of buckets! Performers: Paschale Straiton, Peter Finegan, Bill Palmer Performing: Sat & Sun, Cathedral Sq.

Ijud: The Streetwalker Gallery (Slovenia) Irish Premiere This ready-made gallery invites you to discover the finest artworks hidden behind every street corner. Come and see a newly found Picasso, Pollock or even Zankič in places where you would never expect them! The Streetwalker Gallery uses the power of imagination to transform everyday elements of the city into art masterpieces. Cracked walls, traffic signs and zebra crossings are not what they seem. Discover Waterford from a new perspective! Join this interactive guided tour, participate in a lively debate on contemporary art and contribute a new work of art to the collection. Admission: 0 Euros (50% discount for students and pensioners) Smoking and pets are permitted. Performers: Jurij Bobic, Nika Gabrovsek, Grega Mocivnik, Jurij Torkar Meeting point: Spraoi HQ Festival Office, The Quay (beside the G.P.O). Please note this is a walking tour, lasting approximately 1.5 hrs. Times: Fri 4pm & 7.30pm, Sat 3pm & 7pm, Sun 1.30pm & 4.30pm The Flying Dutchmen: The Sky s the Limit (Holland/Canada) Irish Premiere A duo that produce a street show, slick, funny and highly skilled, and one that appeals to all ages. Their astonishing stunts, great audience interaction, interchangeable skills, all served up in their own inimitable style, make them a huge audience favourite, and they have brought this show around the world. Always looking for more improvisation and comedy, every show is still an adventure and a lot of fun for both artists. Performers: Michiel Hesseling and Jean-Michel Paré Performing: Fri: John Robert Sq & Gladstone St., Sat & Sun: The Mall

Ambaradan: Che fa, concilia? (Italy) Irish Premiere Are you unsure where you are? Are you stuck in traffic? Can t you cross the road? You re in luck, because he s going to rescue you: the virtuous of the whistle, the ace of the signal paddle, the knight of the roundabout. The only cop in the world who can create a traffic jam in the desert and give you directions if you are lost in a glass of water. He can withdraw your license and return it only after the practice test or the balloon test. An impeccable agent chasing offenders by unicycle and directing traffic on a balance ball. A cop so loyal to his duty as to upset any other existing rule of the Civil Code or physics! Performer: Lorenzo Baronchelli Performing: Walkabout Fri, Sat and Sun Circle of Two: Dodo s Dream (UK) Inspired by the myth of Pygmalion and the tales of E.T.A. Hoffmann, Circle of Two tell the heartbreaking, impossible love story of an eccentric inventor and the mechanical doll he has created in resemblance of his deceased wife. Dodo s Dream is a visual and universal show for all ages. A fairy tale that triggers the laughter and wonder of the little ones and the emotions of the grown ups! Performers: Celia Mendizabal and Ralph Taylor Performing: Fri and Sat: Constitution Square Waterford BreakBeat (Ireland) Join this vibrant dance company at Spraoi, in association with LimsRochers Cru, for an outdoor Hip-Hop/Break-Dance workshop and performance. Their outdoor DJ station will be cutting the best tunes for all to enjoy, plus parents and children from the audience can participate and learn some basic moves. The show will end with an electrifying group performance by the professional dancers and tutors of BreakBeat. Choreographers: Deirdre Dempsey, Barry Burke (Bazzy B) Performing: Sat: The Applemarket & The Mall. Sun: The Applemarket

CELEBRATING After their barn-storming performance at the 2017 festival, Traces Dance Ensemble are back with a brand new show. This wonderful dance theatre outdoor adventure with beautiful movement direction is a performance not to be missed. Crossing Bridges explores relationships between people with perceived disabilities and the general public, where they interact and inspire each other, and how perceptions can change. Choreography: Dee Grant and Jess Rowell Performing: Sat: Hanover St Traces Dance Ensemble: Crossing Bridges (Ireland) 40 YEARS The 2Men (UK) The Tourists Good old salt of the Earth boys and lovable East End cockney geezers. Truth is they don t get out of London much in fact, this is their first time! Having won a competition in their local newspaper to attend the Spraoi Festival, they are completely besides themselves with excitement. Enjoy, as they marvel at all the new and exciting things they find on their first trip away. They are forever on the lookout for a good photo to take and show the lads back home. Snap Happy Paparazzi These short sighted, celebrity crazed, photographers are always on the lookout for a good photo opportunity of someone rich and famous going about their daily lives. The only trouble is that they get a bit confused about who s who! Will you get mistaken for an A list celebrity and be snapped by the Snap Happy Paparazzi? Please note that no actual photos will be taken. Performers: Anton Mackman and Dave Sol Performing: Walkabout, Sat & Sun

Waterford Youth Arts: Weird, Wacky and Wonderful (Ireland) Irish Premiere Seamie saw a traveling circus show when he was a child and now he wants to go back there once again. People say he s strange, but maybe he s just a bit different? Weird Wacky and Wonderful is a new street spectacle by Waterford Youth Arts, specially created for Spraoi 2018, combining circus, dance, theatre and masks, blended with some of Waterford s finest musicians. Directed by; Enda Moran Performing: Fri, Sat & Sun: Hanover St Fanzinis: Guido Fanzini s Impossible Circus (Ireland) Pogo sticks? Check. Plot to steal thunder from brother? Check. Guido Fanzini has finally managed to demote his brother Ronaldo to a lowly circus roustabout so that he can shine as the star of Guido Fanzini s Impossible Circus. But Ronaldo may have other ideas! A circus tale of sibling rivalry, brotherly love and pogo sticks. Performed by the Fanzini brothers Guido and Ronaldo Performing: Fri: Hanover St, Sat & Sun: Constitution Sq. The Yelling Kitchen Prince (Holland) Irish Premiere The Yelling Kitchen Prince is the only owner of the Kitchen-organ-drumset in the world. Cooking, playing the organ and drumming at the same time.. it s a piece of cake for this amazing artist! This physical show spins frantically between theatre, a circus act and a music concert but its final delivery is all about the baking of one solitary pancake. Flying ingredients, pounding music and a really sharp cooking knife all add the driving force for the 27 and a half minutes it takes for this ode to reach its climax the perfect pancake! Performed by: Peter Piemét Performing: Fri: John Roberts Sq., Sat & Sun: The Mall

Skinny Elvis This three piece from Dublin are sure to have you dancing in the aisles and swinging from the ceiling. An Irish rockabilly band, delving into swamp boogie, delta punk and voodoo. Twang with a bang! Chimpanbee The energy and buzz of this Waterford based band has influences of all the great rock acts over the years, with three part harmonies, bright honkytonk style piano, great bass riffs and brilliant vocals. Just released their debut album Can t Stop or Rewind. Quangodelic A 12 to 20 piece funk band, this band has become an ever growing collective of talent who make the dirtiest funk known to man. A full brass section, madscientist keys, great vocals and a tight rhythm section guarantee long, sweaty, high-octane sets. Mongrel State Mongrel by name, mongrel by nature. Rock, Western and a host of other styles are put through the wringer with honkytonk pianos & fourpart harmonies sitting side-by-side with New Orleans grooves, electric guitars and even the odd inflection of a synth. Ashley Sheehan and the Fighting Spiders Making a return to Spraoi for the first time in four years, this band s music has been described as Indie Electro pop with some orchestral leanings, with a live show full of colour and vigour. An eagerly anticipated second album is also on the cards. Bring Your Own Brass These sweaty brassophiles are taking over and you better watch out. Expect noughties mashups, spine-tingling hip-hop licks, some tasty latin and tropical flavours, and a generous portion of original bass for your face. THE HOP HOUSE 13 WORDS AND ASSOCIATED LOGOS ARE TRADE MARKS. GUINNESS & CO
